Touching on the drawn-out saga of the Jets’ future post-Martin Lee, Lederer said: “It’s an ongoing negotiation, to be honest.

“I think we’ll see a resolution in the next few days. It has to get resolved soon because the season starts this month.“

There are a couple of interested parties.”

Isnt Lederer involved with Wanderers?..... How is he signing players for Newcastle??. Is it because he owns them as well? Is that why they aren't allowed to beat other teams in the league, is it a "development cap" or something.... Aleague is sooooo confusing sometimes.

Agreed. Hard to understand by those that follow amateur leagues.

In a resort somewhere

I think he owns the Wanderers or something.

But at least Wanderers aren't benefitting by signing anyone cheap from Newcastle

Ah, that must be the reason I don't get it then... thanks.
Is the goal in the Aleague for one person/group to own all the franchises eventually and then take turns allocating which region's fans celebrate a title each season?
True football. I hope you get to live your dreams.

As I understand it, the APL group nominally hold the shares for Newcastle as Lee has been delicenced. I am presuming that Lederer is speaking as a spokesperson for the APL group.

Jarrod O'Doherty has gone to Newy in return.
Why no news on a new owner? Newy is a haven for juniors..maybe it's not prudent for businesses to invest there, so far removed from major Cities.
The Knights have always struggled.

Referring to Fong’s mooted move to take charge of Brisbane, Lederer said: “I believe that could well happen.

“Chris Fong is a good business guy and very capable.“

He loves football and has a lot going for him.

He’s financially secure and I think he’d do a very good job.”

Agreed, shit talk allround. If no-one ever aquires the services of the Jets or Mariners for that matter, kids will always play football in those areas regardless.
Northern Sydney and another S/E Qld team would ensure that those kids don't have to relocate too far to play in the A League in future.

“We’re talking to nine different parties,” Lederer revealed.

“There’s been a hell of a lot of interest, a lot of different people and important companies from around the world.

“These are very prominent, world class providers. It’s getting close, very close. I think by the end of April, or May, this will all be resolved.

"It’s exciting ... that’s all I can tell you.”

Not good. But I dont know there is much value in criticising owners who are doing their best  to save NJ’s.
Its a never ending issue for Football fans and why we continually fail.
We have enough inbred  NSL trolls ,who delight in any bad news about the A-League .Because the past was always so much better, eventhough the huge football fan base ,never followed it.🤔

Dont think anyone is claiming the NSL was better mate, just that the plastic franchise system is shit.
At least the past administrations weren't racists and didn't sell off the sport to a bunch of "owners" who dont really care about it. No one ever turned away a club with a fistful of dollars wanting to part of the league, no matter who they where. I mean look at Lou Sticca's Carlton FC abortion as an example.
Careful about calling people inbred by the way, the majority owners of CFG are the Emirati royal family and Im sure they wouldn't appreciate the innuendo.

‘I stayed right out of it’: Wanderers owner denies transfer collusion claims

“It stinks. It’s a bad look,” said one club executive.
Lederer rejected any such notion, saying the decision to sign Ugarkovic had been driven solely by Robinson.

“I stayed right out of it,” Lederer told the Herald. “This has got to do with a relationship between a coach and a player, that’s it. He likes the way he manages.“We appoint a manager, he picks the players. That’s his decision.

If you go around the A-League, unless I’m wrong, nearly every club - the chairman, CEO, they don’t get involved in who’s playing and how they’re playing.”

Newcastle executive chairman Shane Mattiske also denied there was any level of coercion involved in their call to release Ugarkovic, saying recruitment decisions at the Jets were made well out of the purview of the current ownership and solely by the club’s football department.

“We have implemented an arrangement where the owners of the business don’t have a clear line of sight on our recruitment and retention decisions,” Mattiske said.“They’re aware of broader strategies around how we will build a squad, the broader areas of investment and the sort of talent we’re after. But there isn’t a clear transfer of information around exactly what is happening in terms of our recruitment plays. We’re able to make decisions without generating a conflict through the ownership group.”

This decision, Mattiske said, ensured a very strong outcome for the Jets considering they stood to lose Ugarkovic for nothing at the end of the season. Sources at the Jets also claim Ugarkovic’s unhappiness had become a significant issue for the team’s overall harmony.

Lederer admitted he could understand why fans or other clubs would be uncomfortable with Newcastle’s current ownership landscape but said it was better than the alternative of dissolving the team altogether.

“The previous owner basically disappeared. There were not many options,” he said.

“We could let the club fall over and forget the Jets, don’t exist. We could get a new owner, which there wasn’t any. It was a club that was in a bit of disarray.

“We, as the new A-League, said we can’t let the club go because Newcastle is a very important area and team for us, so we financially supported it. We didn’t get involved to take players away from there. We got involved to make it what it should be, a powerful football club. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

“I don’t see (private equity) as a negative,” says billionaire Paul Lederer, who has experience with private equity in both business and sport. He sold 70 per cent of the Primo food empire to private equity in 2011 in a $740m deal, and together they sold the entire business for $1.45bn three years later.

Lederer says private equity typically will accept seven out of 10 deals being successful. Big sales make up for less spectacular ventures.

As chairman of A-league club Western Sydney Wanderers, he is involved in negotiations with potential private equity investment that could value the competition at between $250m and $400m.

“It gives you liquidity and cash injection,” Lederer said. “You’re able to get capital into the game, and due to COVID, sports need capital.

“Look, they are not going to hang around. They look for an exit in three to five years, probably three in the case of sport. So there is that uncertainty factor. But sport is undervalued now and if they can increase the value of it within a few years then everyone is happy.”

The Australian recently reported that the A-League would exchange up to 25 per cent of the privatised competition to private equity. Silver Lake, the same mooted partner for rugby union in New Zealand and potentially Australia, is said to be in the box seat. It paid $US500m for a stake in City Football Group, the owner of English giant Manchester City and Melbourne City. Powerbrokers from CFG are prominent in the ranks of Australian soccer administrators.

The soccer deal could involve funding for a broadcast service as well as some funds going to club owners who have lost tens of millions in recent years.
