So who's our coach? Gus or Barrett?

Depends who you ask...

If you ask Gus, he'll tell you Barrett but he himself believes its him.

If you ask Barrett, he'll tell you its him.

...but it's really me.... I'm the one who pulls the strings....

If Flanagan is to be shopped to ESL then our new illustrious leader is speaking with forked tongue before he even settles in. When grilled the other night, (I think it was on Fox (panel)) the subject of Flanagan was rsised and Gould said that he wasn't going anywhere and he is part of the rebuilding process. So is it a case of 'In Gould We Trust' or is it 'say something today , knowing full well I never intended to hold that promise, tomorrow'. Time will tell.

I'm not fussed what he says one day and does the other as long as it's the right decision.

And in my mind, shopping him around is the absolutely right decision.

Barrett, but….

and it’s not a bad but.

Gould has made it clear he’s in charge of all things football, and I’d take that to mean outside the dressing room, that’s Barrett’s domain and that’s where it ends. Staffing, recruitment, club direction etc etc, Tom will have his say but Gus has the final say.

And I actually reckon this is the way to go and said it long before Gus came. This is the model The Dragons tried and then inexplicably abandoned. It’s the same model NFL franchises operate with in that the coach is an employee, and while he has a say about the players he wants it’s not the final say or even the the major say.

What Des did to the joint is a good example of giving coaches too much power because in the end, most of them are transient. When one does a career at a club like Bellamy or Robinson or has the creds of Bennett, fine, they can run the joint. But they got to earn that right first and until then it’s best to give them a team to coach that THE CLUB (or in this case Gus) assembles and does the numbers on rather than a coach with a 3 year plan before he moves on.

I think it’s the model. Gus has signed on for 5 years and he represents CLUB and our long term vision and interests, most coaches have their own interests first.

I agree that you give the successful coaches some leeway, but in Des's case, it was clear that the club had to intervene and reel him in, yet they didnt and he nearly destroyed us.

DOGS’ SHOCK PLAY FOR PEARCE
James Hooper from Fox Sports
July 23rd, 2021 8:31 am
THE Bulldogs are the latest club considering making a play for experienced Newcastle halfback Mitchell Pearce as part of the Belmore rebuild.
Canterbury-Bankstown power brokers and major sponsor the Laundy family have received a phone call from a third party reminding them of Pearce’s availability as of November 1.Pearce is currently contracted with the Newcastle Knights until the end of next year but with plans to move Kalyn Ponga into the five-eighth role and Jake Clifford to play halfback the Bulldogs are looking at Pearce as a live option.

I think it's a good play to get Pearce.
We have a young team and we need older experienced heads to keep the kids calm and focused on the field to avoid kung fu throw downs whilst walking off the field at half time.
A bit like the Brett Kimmorley signing.

I would have preferred Reynolds but Pearce would work very well. If he stays fit he would be great for Burto

I don't rate Pearce, maybe he is better than Flanno.

Regardless, I doubt that he is on our radar.

Reynolds is good, but was always overpriced.

If Brooks is punted from the Tigers, I am interested, sure his defence needs work, but the attacking side is good.
Let's get the pack sorted then give Burton, Averillo,  Wakeham and BBO one season to show what they can do.

Ash Taylor is another talented player out of fashion.

I would rather back Baz to develop a young player or get a talented player back on the rails.
Pearce is neither young or exceptionally talented, sure he has good games, but also plenty of bad games.

I would also put Sezer down as another, sure he struggled to seal the deal earlier, but the talent and instincts are there, the price might be right.

These older players, rejected by their current clubs, need to be realistic about price.
There is a reason clubs are moving in other directions and that equation is talent and impact per dollar.

You dont rate Pearce?
Wow.

I can understand there may be a preference for AR, but geez....
Pearce and Ponga have been the 2 most instrumental players the Knights signed to revive them from wooden spoon, and they continue to be.

Aside from injury concerns he is a certainty to be one of the better players in most teams. Not sure what price he'd be asking but if it was around 500k per season for 1 or 2 seasons, then I reckon it's worth a shot.

The other negative is if recruiting him will result in discontent on someone like Averillo.

It's not a MUST recruitment idea but it wouldnt be the worst pursuit either

Pearce is easily a much better player than any of the others. And easily the best available halfback in the comp. It’s a signing that needs to be made while we have young players who need some help. It’s a Stuart or Kimmorley like signing.

Love him or hate him Pearce is one of the best halves in the NRL. If we get him cheap we will be a chance to make the finals or better if everybody stays fit

Yuk...

Agree to disagree, not saying that there are not issues, just that the talent is there.
Does need a good coach to sort him out, maybe he is a lost cause

Even when Pearce was playing SOO I never rated him, would like to know his actual win/loss percentage especially against top 8 sides.

Brooks win/loss percentage is worse, but he is rarely played in a good defensive side.

When a player is out if fashion or on their last chance the price is right.

Newcastle want to offload Pearce to free up cap space, that tells you the price.
