If the club manages Averillo badly and he goes it will be JT all over again.
Don't imagine talented young players are happy to play reserve grade or will not get bjg money offers elsewhere.
I would expect Guz and Baz to factor that in.
Burton could play centre, but I don't think he would be happy with that.

+x+xMick O, I wouldn't have a clue what Barrett wants or who he wants to play at ½. I just don't think Pearce is our answer. It wouldn't matter what I thought anyway because I'm not the coach. Just as an observer though, I think internally TBaz still has options before looking elsewhere. Just asking why you think he is not the answer mate. And who do you think us? Burton.

+x+xIf an experienced No.7 is what T Baz needs…. then on the cheap, Shirley it’s got to be “Holla for a Marshall” I wouldn’t expect 20 plus games from Benji, but Used sparingly, he could work. Do we need an experienced half? Often that is code for a guy with no running game. Baz knows what a half has to do. Under the new rules, vision, footy instincts and execution are what is needed, a half has to present a running threat and or have an exceptional kicking game. But Pearce has a great running and kicking game. Has good vision and instinct and executed better than any other half in the comp. Have you watched Pearce play? I know a lot of people give him a bad rap but I doubt they actually watch him on the field. The guy isn’t Andrew John’s but he is a very similar player. He is very similar to Cleary

I dont think going after Pearce is a necessity... but if we do, it tells me Gould and Barrett are thinking challenging for a title in 2022 and not 1 or 2 years after that which is the minimum time frame I expected. You have to also remember that if we get Pearce, he automatically becomes that Captain that I have been talking about. ...but I still dont know what that means for Averillo...unless he moves to centre or unless Burton partners Naden in the centres... I doubt we are recruiting Pearce, if we did Averillo would go to fullback or another club. Any additional half we recruit should be one reserve grade wages becuase the young players deserve first shot and are the long term solution. What has Pearce won recently? Newcastle lost in week 1 of the finals last year. Newcastle finish 11th in 2019 only one spot above us. I have seen Pearce have very good games, bad games and games that are a non-event. He was a better player 5 years ago, add in injuries and a high salary. If he was a gun like JT, Cronk, or Alan Langer even at the back end of the career with injuries and a high salary then definately woth it. Pearce is not in the same class. I think if your comparison is JT, Cronk and Langer, you are inadvertently praising him as one of the best halves. And he certainly is in that class just below the guys you mentioned. To be fair.... Pearce has the runs on the board while Burton and Averillo dont. If we were a top 8 team and looking to challenge, I would be more for it. Given where we are at atm, I'm neither for or against it, assuming we don't pay silly money or it pushes someone like Averillo out. Money is my major objection, if we offload Flanno as part of the deal, it makes more sense. I prefer Burton and Averillo get first shot at the halves and that is the other reason why I don't like the idea. 3rd reason is I genuinely don't rate Pearce, and haven't for years. 4th reason is hooker and prop are higher priorities. Sometimes fans form different opinions, I would rather stick to my opinion and be wrong, than gloss over it. If he is a direct swap for Flanno it’s a great fit for us. Yes we shouldn’t be spending too much cap on the halves. But Pearce for two years is a great fit for us.
Avo has time to learn to be a seven or six. As does Burto who clearly does better with an experienced half next to him.
Yes I agree hooker and prop are more important but on the cheap Pearce is a great buy

Yes I agree hooker and prop are more important but on the cheap Pearce is a great buy I don't think Pearce will be cheap, he is on big money at Newcastle, we would need them to pick up 50% of his wage and offload Flanno, I think he is on at least 500k per season now, possibly backloaded. Newcastle are showing early signs of having screwed up their capm so might be desperate. My hunch is that the Fox or Duffty will be fullback, Averillo will not be happy in reserve grade or on the bench. If Burton is happy to play centre, that is a viable option.

Yes he could be JT but it’s unlikely. JT was playing halfback in the juniors and was clearly one of the best playmakers in the game. He just lacked size.
Pearce is a Stuart or Kimmorley signing. Short term on the field but with long term coaching for the young halves.

Pearce is a Stuart or Kimmorley signing. Short term on the field but with long term coaching for the young halves. Averillo wants to play in the spine, and is on record saying that. Fullback is probably his best position in the long run. Different player to JT, the similarity is elite level talent. I agree Averillo and Burton might need a season or two to fully nail playing in the halves. What we needs is a Tricky Trindall type half signing, experience, but cheap and happy to play reserve grade if needed. Then the coach isn't steamrolled into a particular team selection. There is also a chance they haven't given up on Flanno and Wakeham, at this stage both are on the books for 22. I thought JT was a gun after seeing him play for 5 mins. But I remember short sighted fans criticizing him for slipping over. Averillo is similar, I would rather be sure he isn't the next JT before we let him go. I'm not even 100% happy about Atoni going, our best players are always homegrown.

Was made a scapegoat during QLDs origin domination but all he really needed was the current backline and forwards. If you've watched Newcastle games you would see the massive difference with him in the team vs not. It's nearly Tom Turbo like.

Avo for mine doesn’t appear to be a half. Might make it at fullback but I think he is a centre. And not a great one. He reminds me so much of Mbye.
I don’t think signing Pearce will force him out though. If anything it will help him develop his game.
Also remember that it’s club first, team second and player third.

Righto Micko, the reason I don't rate Pearce is that I can see that TBaz is training the team to play a particular gameplan and to bring in an established ½back means that he would probably have trouble getting Pearce to follow that gameplan (old habits, been taught by different coaches with different styles, set in the way he plays) just remember, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. For all we know that's what TBaz's was trying with Flanagan but it hasn't worked yet. Just remember he went OK in the first game, but Barrett may have told him he wants him to play a different style and he still ain't got it yet.

+xRighto Micko, the reason I don't rate Pearce is that I can see that TBaz is training the team to play a particular gameplan and to bring in an established ½back means that he would probably have trouble getting Pearce to follow that gameplan (old habits, been taught by different coaches with different styles, set in the way he plays) just remember, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. For all we know that's what TBaz's was trying with Flanagan but it hasn't worked yet. Just remember he went OK in the first game, but Barrett may have told him he wants him to play a different style and he still ain't got it yet. Best $6.95 Inside Sport ever spent...

If age and experience is the reason not to sign Pearce. Than Flanno was the correct signing. But we know now, that signing was a poor one.
Pearce has always played a very similar game to Cleary. Baz has said he wants a player to play the same game as Cleary. It’s a perfect fit.
