+x+x+xAFL Grand Final just finished, twilight Saturday night in lockdown Melbourne.... I reckon the ratings will be huge..... Just noticed the score. Another blow out. Will cause a big drop in ratings. MMM mentioned 4 million in Victoria alone ..... 1.6 million in Melbourne. 3 million metro.

Foxtel is in a competitive position after locking in long-term partnerships with the big five sports codes – the AFL, NRL, cricket and the motor sports – and is being “smarter” about which rights deals it chooses to pursue, the company’s boss, Patrick Delany, says. At the same time, streaming services Kayo Sports, Binge and soon-to-launch Flash will help drive the broadcaster to five million subscribers within three years. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/media/foxtels-big-five-awinning-position-says-ceo-patrick-delany/news-story/69392db4492b95ffced6c93aaca5d65aI know there are many here who would like to see Foxtels influence diminish: Speaking at Foxtel’s strategy day on Thursday, chief executive Mr Delany said the media company’s ability to offer premium sport was the direct result of signing good deals with top codes and having detailed knowledge of what consumers wanted to watch. “The data we have allows us to see what people are using and not using,” he said. “Prior to having that data, we would have layer upon layer of sports though we didn’t quite know what worked. But (that) has led us to where we should invest more. “That’s why the strategy moved to the big five – the AFL, NRL, cricket and the motor sports.” Mr Delany said it was also important to significantly invest in popular local sporting codes while also having plenty of international offerings available.

The big five constantly referred to as being, Afl, Rugby League, Cricket & Motor Sports. Um, thats four. Is the other one darts? They show that alot. Anyway if they don't want Soccer they can happily go their own way. This new deal gives 'Soccer' a new lease on life, more Scope to give us more content. In particular 'FREE TO AIR COVERAGE FOR MULTIPLE MATCHES ON 10 BABY!

I think they split Motor Sports (plural) into two, maybe Grand Prix and Supercars.

Fox is kidding themselves if they think Football and Basketball aren't part of a big 5. They are basing a model on an audience where the majority are born before 1980 and they are paying more and more for sports that people used to pay $140 a month for and now expect to pay $10-15 for. They have a sizeable, ready made audience with a compliant media but I don't see much scope for growth with any of those sports. I am really happy to be gone from the old world Fox platform. As for Football, I would love to see EPL go to Paramount, then they instantly become a big sports player.

Taken from TV tonight ..the Socceroos won the non main channel ratings... but the analysis IMO is interesting the Mel numbers were greater than the Sydney numbers Brisbane also if you compare Sydneys population of 5.5 million is roughly 2.5 times Brisbane then Brisbane arguably bettered Sydney.... as for Adelaide take 17K * 5 and its 85K,. Will be very interested in the SA game, and hopefully it will get more media attention leading into the game. Rank | Description (grouped) | Channel\Network | (r) 5 City Metro | Sydney | Melbourne | Brisbane | Adelaide | Perth | 1 | FOOTBALL: JAPAN V SOCCEROOS | 10 Bold | 213,000 | 69,000 | 80,000 | 30,000 | 17,000 | 17,000 | https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/10/tuesday-12-october-2021.html

The toppin-the-multis argument doesn't look that great when we're just nudging re-runs of Bluey and Peppa Pig. ouch

Hand on heart not the other thing...
The general media for the games has been small especially prematch and its new on Ten and most games away in the early morning...
This is by no ways an excuse, its capable of expanding...
The issue is growth.
My limited understanding is everything is kinds being held back for a major launch .... starting in 10 to 15 days...
My guess is by this time next year the 213 will be around 450....
The issue is over expectations and seeing a small start as a failure...
My guess is the home match against Japan next year will exceed 400K ...

+xyeah , I guess the masses haven't yet "found" the Socceroos on Ch 10 yet Funny how they seem to be able to find everything else... Give the new media partnership some time you sad, doom scrolling gobshite..... Socceroos fell off the radar years ago because they are largely foreign based professionals and have had no games anywhere near an Australian audience. The Matildas got tremendous Olympics ratings recently, benefiting from. Huge Olympics coverage, so there is plenty of people interested. It'll just take some time to build momentum. You can spend that time pulling yourself over any poor number. I'll just enjoy the game.

So basically wait for the Socceroos to (hopefully) make the WC, then we might see some half decent ratings?

The question that should be asked is why it wasn't on its main channel? Hmm! Although, the low numbers vindicate their decision.

+xThe question that should be asked is why it wasn't on its main channel? Hmm! Although, the low numbers vindicate their decision. There is a very good reason. I'm not sure what it's up against on the main channel, let's say it was the Cheap Seats, which got an underwhelming 330k. The socceroos would get that quite easily on the main channel, but would the Cheap Seats get 330k on Bold? The answer is no. People will actively seek out the socceroos on Bold, but they ain't going to actively seek out the Cheap Seats. So overall, the network is better off running the Socceroos on Bold and getting its 213k, which is a very healthy rating for the multis.

+xWell, you can't do much better than be no. 1 on the list. This is a totally flawed argument. Of course you can do better. Ratings are not valued by some arbitrary ranking system of who finished on top of a particular channel. The are valued by the numbers of estimated viewers themselves. That is what drives advertising valuations and broadcast deals. Taking your theory, if the Socceroos attracted just 50k viewers against Japan nationally, but still nudged out Bluey and Peppa Pig, then we could all be happy that its a good result because they were #1 on the list. It's a poor result and its important to understand why, rather than deny it and say we're happy. In my mind, its a poor result because not enough die hard fans cared to watch it, and probably not enough casual fans knew it was on.

I disagree that 213k on the multis is a poor result. It's a very rare thing to get that much of a rating for a channel like Bold.

So overall, the network is better off running the Socceroos on Bold and getting its 213k, which is a very healthy rating for the multis. I mostly agree with this. Effectively this was SBS' strategy when they had the rights. The Socceroos / A League will rate what the Socceroos / A League will rate. The channel doesnt matter The thing about the main channel is not "seeking out" shows but advertising dollars, which is where people here tend to have the cart before the horse approach Commercial TV is paid for by advertisers, so the onus is on the network to put premium content in main slots to give advertisers the best value (in other words, the show drives the ratings slot, not the other way around). By having a proven show on the main channel, and sport on the second channel, it allows for a network to double down on value If they put premium content on a second channel, then the amount of revenue they receive from advertisers for that content is less as the cost to advertise on a secondary channel is less (and most likely worked out in advance). Plus sports dont have many ads during the live game I think having sports on a secondary channel with a HD stream on the internet partner will be the way to go outside of major events. Only a few dinosaurs will think they are being hard done by
