surely Hammond gets a call up then? if your calling up Volpato? At least Tristant is playing with men every week at only 18 came through a great academy. From looking at the first team, I think they trying to get him learn to play on the Right as they have a RB starting for the first team at RW and another young LW. Seems they really setting everything up for him to come through. Hugely talented, double assist over the weekend also.

+x+x+x+xCristian Volpato scored a penalty and had a nice assist against Juventus in 2-2 draw. Goal and assist are on his Instagram story. Pinpoint ball for the assist. MOM as well. The kid is some player. He's made the bench for Roma's first team already, so Jose obviously see's something in him. Definitely don't want to lose this one!!! Too early for him to make the squad against Vietnam & Oman? At this point, I’d call him up and start him at 10. I mean really, why not? We’re looking very ordinary against ordinary sides. Arnie won’t tho, fully expect the exact same players to make next cut. You’d call up volpato and you would also start him at 10. Seriously? mate please, let’s keep it in our pants for five minutes. I’m as big of an advocate for promoting youngsters as much as anyone but we need to take it easy here. Tristan Hammond is scoring goals for fun for the Austrian Vienna reserves, he’s been in Europe for years now with sporting Lisbon and now AV. Volpato is very good on the socials and everything else so he’s always in peoples minds. He has stated he wants to play for Italy. Let’s see how he goes. I remember a certain Alex Robertson never committing to anyone and now he doesn’t get off the bench for the worst team in Scotland. But every time he tied his shoe lace TWG would come out with an article saying ‘Robertson ties his shoelace and he’s eligible for Peru, Australia, Scotland and England’. I'm not saying he starts, but bring him on for the last 15 mins, so he's capped. Plus 100% he'd do better than Nabbout's effort against SA - young, skilful, hungry - not going through the motions like some of the guys that have played recently

Hammond is a gun as well - can't wait to see him break into the first team in Austria. Same applies to Peupion, Watts & Teague - still pretty young & lots of promise

How many failed overhyped wonderkids does it take for Australian football fans to calm the fuck down about the next overseas youth academy kid who’s never played a single game of professional football? I feel like this continuous cycle of ‘cap him!!!’ has been on constant repeat for my entire life supporting football.

Yeah you're right, but if they don't cap them early, they get poached like Dykes for example - we could do with a striker playing & scoring in the Championship right about now. Plus at the moment we don't exactly have an over abundance of quality players lining up to play for the Socceroos - half of the existing squad are sitting on the bench in club land. He brought Stensness into the squad and didn't play him FFS & McGree who's carving up ATM gets like 5 mins off the bench?!! The old guard are going to get us qualified this time, so maybe some of the young guns coming through could help?!!!

But i also think its healthy to take some risk every now and then. Let’s face it, this current lot are on track to miss qualification so why not try something different. And I believe Mourinho’s judgement over anyone involved with Australian football, if he’s good enough for a call up to Roma first team at 17 then that’s all I need to know.

If he’s no good then sub him and revert back the usual suspects currently leading us to miss qualification. Hammond doing that well huh? Call him up too then. Or maybe it’s better to stick with Nabbout….. The point is, we’re too cautious. Take a risk. It may pay off or it may not, either way it’s just a game.

There's a difference between "taking a risk" and calling up a teenager who looks good playing against other teenagers. Where's Panos Armenakas? He scored a couple of goals for a mid table Jupiler Pro club last season but now 23 years old in the Danish first division. Where's John Iredale? Looked great with Wolfsburg reserves but now 22 years old in the German third division. "it's just a game". Really? Not many more games remaining. There's WCQ at stake.

I feel like this continuous cycle of ‘cap him!!!’ has been on constant repeat for my entire life supporting football. Yeah I guess this is where age and experience comes into play. If you've been following all the hyped up young aussies in the last decade (and I'm as guilty as anyone on this forum for hyping them up) then you'd realise that for every 100 who is showing promise at an overseas academy, only about 50% ever play first team football/make an Olyroos squad, about 10% have a decent career in first team football for more than 5 seasons and about 1% ever makes it to the socceroos. I won't make an extensive list but just think about all the young aussies who actually played in several Premier League games in the last 10 years who havent really kicked on: Jordan Lyden (struggling to start at League 2) Chris Herd (where is he now?) Aidan O'Neill (has made a decent career but overall disappointing after getting EPL minutes at 18yo) Caleb Watts (dropped back to reserves, ok early days) Tyrese Francois (cant even get a game in reserves, ok early days) Rogic has been the 1% who has really kicked on from the youth hype and even he has been slightly disappointing. Just look at this season: Watts, Francois, Armenakas, Arzani, Hammond, Teague, Courtney-Perkins, Iredale etc etc - all started well getting first team football now faded. I think we do have some really promising young players at u/23 level and our Olyroos squad for next years U/23 AFC championship will be the most exciting in a while. But until these hyped up players get a full season or two of senior minutes week in week out, then its best to be content watching their performances in our underage teams and hoping they get regular senior football game time and work their way up the pyramid (like Irvine did). Calling for them to be in socceroos WCQ squads for this year is ludicrous (IMO).

+xApostolos Stamatelopoulos scored another brace which gets him to 5 goals in just 4 games for his new club. That's great news. Was hoping we'd keep him aylt Jets.

Victory? think adelaide are interested. would make sense, adelaide boy, and they desperately need a centre back Would be ok with this. We got rid of Elsey who was never spectacular but 95% solid and replaced him with Ansell and Tratt and from what I saw of Tratt in the 2nd half vs Perth he will cost us games. Thing is we have Jakobsen, Tratt, Ansell and Timetheou. Adding a 5th would be pretty crazy.

The issue is capping them early gives them an inflated ego which generally tends to mean they make poor club decisions i.e. Arzani, Fair to say he left a season or two too early. But playing in the world cup gave him a false sense of where he is at in world football. I know he had a bad injury but i think enough time has passed now for that to no longer be an issue, and he is in the belgium 2nd division.

+xAkiel Raffie came off the bench for Fleetwood Town in the trophy yesterday. He's also been recalled from his loan early. Still only 18. One to keep an eye on Extremely early days but I think it’s more promising if they are loaning him out to low level teams for first team football against adults with the occasional minutes of EFL trophy/cup games rather than playing for their under 23s. I’m getting more and more skeptical by the day of our young players going overseas and playing youth football for academies of big teams instead of dropping down divisions and playing first team football and working their way up the pyramid.
We actually have an interesting experiment with the Francois brothers in the UK. Older brother Tyrese has stayed at Fulham hoping to getting regular time in first team squad after many years excelling for their youth team. Younger brother Marley was carving it up for Bristol city’s youth team and instead quit them to join 7th division Bath City for regular first team football. Let’s see who advances the most in their careers.
