+x+xIt's strange times when people like Enzo's trust in the media and government/cultural institutions is so low they will take on face value the word of a man and leader like Putin regarding his casus belli (thanks seinfeld). People like Enzo would have deported people like Enzo back in his good old days :hehe: I think there is a lot to like about him if you are a hardline conservative in the west, particularly in respects to his social policies which have resisted western liberalism is gay rights, women's rights. etc. But it is hilarious watching the self appointed protectors of free speech in our country back a man who literally poisons anybody brave enough to stand up to him. The thinking is what position are the 'woke' left taking and I'll go with the opposite of that. Tucker Carlson is the Grand Poobah of this line of thought. Must be proud of himself to be plastered all over Russian TV and media singing the praises of Putin.

While it's great to see the Ukrainians put up a pretty fierce resistance I think it'll just mean Putin will order whole cities flattened because there's no way Putin will pull the pin on this now.. And that means massive casualties. Bit of a Hobbs choice. Give up, lose and keep your country somewhat intact and most of your people alive or have the joint bombed back to the stone age with 10's of thousands of deaths. It's fucked.

Is the negotiating here going to be that Putin will say 'we will withdraw' if what it considers to be "Western" influence to be "removed" from the country? i.e Any sort of Nato membership? Any sort of NATO miltary bases or equipment? Seems to me that he scared shitless of Ukraine not for Ukraine itself but for their "Western" partners. Is this going to be a Cuba situation? Putins actions may seem extreme but perfectly understandable from the point of view of protecting his nation. We would do the same. I saw somebody a few days ago ask how would the USA react if Russia and China started building military bases/ stationing troops in Mexico? I didn't realise US had bases and troops stationed there. Sorry genuinely don't know what part of Ukraine has a US military base and US troops? Where is it? Referring to Enzo's sentiment about your neighbour harbouring the military might of your enemy.

The irony is massive swaths of the country are not areas that are remotely "ethnic russian". Just look at the territorial boundaries of the Russian empire 200 years ago. People talk about China being an ally but it's nothing more than a marriage of convenience. With Russia's ageing and shrinking population and global warming, they will be looking at Siberia and the East of the country very keenly in the not too distant future.

Well, didn't he also say that Ukraine is a fiction created by Lenin and is really part of Russia? So next stop, we need another buffer state in Poland, etc, etc. End of the day, he can say anything to justify his invasion (and will). Appreciate that NATO expansion has cause major concerns for Russia, but that doesn't justify an invasion.

I can't see China being too pleased with any of this. Firstly, it's bad for business, and Secondly, they would liken China to Ukraine and the US to Russia (imagine the US recognising Taiwan/Tibet and then liberating those areas like Donetsk and Luhansk).
