Would laugh my arse off if big matches in the NSD, if it ever gets going, pull more than matches in the A league. And it will happen. How many people attend the big derbies in the NPL, e.g. South Melbourne-Heidelberg, Sydney Utd-Sydney Olympic, etc.? At best a couple of thousand, even before Covid. I don't think the same match-ups in a putative NSD will get that much fans along to them (I am adamantly for an NSD, however). And if you look around the world you will pretty consistently see the biggest crowds in the second division are higher than the smallest crowds in the top division. There's nothing inherently embarrassing about it. A-League will probably return to around 10k average crowds once they have a season that isn't stuffed around by Covid. An NSD will be fortunate to average 2000 per game when it starts. So I wouldn't gloat so much. If the NSD is played in summer the crowds will be bigger.
The npl in its current form isn’t built for crowds, half the league plays on the same night which dilutes the attendances, you have the state leagues and juniors on at the same time of the year. I know so many South fans who simply can’t get to the games because they have junior commitments with their kids or they’re involved at a local club.
I think even Victory felt the pinch the other week going up against a stack of Friday night npl games, what was it 6k or something against McArthur? I imagine it will be a winter comp, otherwise how will they have pro-rel with the NPL? Your perspective is interesting. But I think you'd find that if South Melbourne played in summer there would be just as many people with excuses: summer holidays, Australian Open, it's too hot, etc., etc. That's just reality. It would at least be good if they could schedule A-League and NPL games not to clash with each other.

I for one would like to ask the same about ViacomCBS/Channel 10.

Serous answer - end of the current TV deal if no improvement in attendance and ratings. As things stand, it is almost impossible to see another TV deal for the A League. And equally seriously, my view is that there is no coming back from this position. The APL had the opportunity to rebrand and relaunch and they'd let me other pass.

The A League must represent the greatest squandered opportunity in the history of the Australian sport. Screwed over by the incompetent management and a crippling lack of any coherent vision for them game by first FFA and now the APL.
And by the fact that the competition was hopelessly under capitalised from the outset, and Frank Lowy must have known that.

Sort of agree, but I thought the A-League may have reached that position at the end of the Fox deal. As it happens, yet another streaming service came along hitting an already crowded market. And probably more will come, but each with a smaller market share than the last. And if all of that wasn't bad enough, COVID probably dealt the final death blow. I wouldn't say it's impossible to come back from this, afterall, when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up, but it certainly looks like they are ready for last rites.

If CBS pull out the deal earlier than planned then the next deal will be no better than NPL streaming.... the "money" will walk....

+xIf the a league got cancelled it would be a disaster for the sport sending back decades I used to think so too mate but not anymore.. It will only be a disaster for those who have spent millions trying to make millions from soccer and for the poor fans who have bought into their franchises for the last 17 years but ... meh ..... no loss they can be easily discarded just like we where. Semi pro will always be around and if you look at someone like basketball, they seem to have had their most successful Boomer eras when there was no one in the game trying to milk the viewership for all it was worth...

my whatsapp football team group had guys saying re the SFC they had trouble seeing it on p+ - just nothing there. 1 said no probs, 2 others had tech issues, re booted etc, finally got things working. One the crowds are way down as known of all things you'd make sure your streaming would be spot on. Just madness.

It was that "high" because of the new Adelaide club which had 24% of the League's total attendance at its home games The previous season was significantly lower. By season's end the A-League will have nearly 25% of the games played mid week and 10-15% of the games with capped attendance because of covid. We really won't know how the League is going until things settle closer to normal which hopefully will be next season.

Ok let me guess the attendance for this weekend it’s almost as fun as tipping: WU vs CCM 3k
Wellington vs city is being played behind closed doors apparently
Adelaide vs victory 9k
Sydney vs wanderers 12k
Brisbane vs Newcastle 5k
MacArthur vs glory 3k
so if Adelaide and the Sydney match can get more then 10k it’ll be good

Attendances from this weekend Saturday 2nd AprilWestern United vs Central Coast - 1423Adelaide vs Victory - 8044Sydney vs Western Sydney - 10091Sunday 3rd AprilBrisbane vs Newcastle - 5463Macarthur vs Perth - 2357Western United and Macarthur remain underwhelming as usual, Adelaide are still consistent and the Sydney Derby just got over 10K. Here's hoping that the return to the SFS next season helps bump up that figure, even in the short-term, because anything under 10K is dire. The Brisbane game looked worse than it did attendance wise so to get 5k is above average.
