Think this 442 starting XI could beat UAE?

                  Ryan
Atkinson    Sains   Wright   Elder
Hrustic    Mooy    Rogic    Goodwin (edit)
           Boyle    Cummings

McGree in for Mooy. As much as I love the guy, he hasn't played in months, so can't see him being fit enough to start.

Hrustic, Mooy and Rogic are all great on their day, but tend to disappear in recent Socceroos matches. I wouldn't trust them all together. Definitely needs some grunt in the middle of the park - McGree and Genreau for me. Goodwin is a decent option, and Cummings.

Agreed. Starting with Mooy and Rogic together is an invitation for the opponent to run rings around us in the middle of the park.

You've got Hrustic and Genreau the wrong way around...

Also, Irvine has been completely anonymous in recent games. I always loved him for the Roos but doesn't even make the squad now IMHO. Devlin for Irvine.

Otherwise, good team.

The thing that bugs me about Irvine is his constant gesturing and high level frustration when a goal is conceded. If he gave as much effort when he's near the ball then maybe he wouldn't look out of place. Sainsbury on the other hand seems to drop his head every time. It's a quick instant reaction I suppose but there's just less poise amongst some of the players.

Don't mind that at all. The wingers can feed and shoot. Hrustic Rogic together will either be good or disaster. If they can move it quickly it'll be exciting to watch.

Houston we have a problem. Degenek isn't starting for Columbus & didn't even come off the bench!!! Has to be Bailey Wright at the moment, until Souttar comes back. With this structure, I'd have McGree starting instead of Rogic.

More just personal preference as Ive always rated Degenek. But tbf I have not been watching either of them lately, from a quick google search I see Degenek copped a thigh injury a few weeks back. Must be what is keeping him out as he started the first 9 games.  Wright must be doing well as Sunderland are in the playoffs. Would be happy with either of them. Was there any reason Wright was not included in the last squad? It seems obvious our 3 best CB's are Sainsbury, Degenek and Wright (Not including Souttar).

Interesting. Elder not playing as much and some niggles to fall away. King is exciting but still a bit timid.

I think Thurgate might get in ahead of Metcalfe. Metcalfe has a longer season and is then moving away. Bundesliga 2 starts 3rd week of July. Qualification takes utmost priority but the reality is that neither Metcalfe or Thurgate will likely play anyway.

Centre backs will undoubtedly be Sainsbury, Degenek, Wright, McGowan. Stensness is a lock under Arnold but also his versatility saves headaches. Annoying but a week is a long time in football.

I read on Twitter thurgate wasn’t selected in the u23 because of an injury. I think it’s unlikely thurgate gets picked for June but I could be wrong.

Unsure what’s happening with karacic and degenek but it’s not good two defenders aren’t playing at all. Atkinson is good cover at RB but who’s the next best.

Defensively we are not strong

Yeah I think Thurgate is injured. He's hot right now but I get these ideas in my head about ones who will and won't make it and he's got a number of players still ahead of him where he'll be kept at bay by nearly no fault of his own. A bit like Aiden O'Neill. Fine player but others better and preferred. Of course the way to get ahead is by going to Europe and playing well there and really lifting yourself above.

I'll pick Atkinson and have Leckie and Dougall as emergency RB cover if required. It would allow for a slot to not be wasted on Grant or Karacic.

despite being ‘just a Friendly’ - If G Kuol can create 2 great chances at goal against a world class defense then he should be in the Roos squad and used as 2nd half sub.

How does everyone think the All Stars team would go vs UAE and Peru?! They were damn good and would probably have just as much chance as whatever Roos squad actually gets on the pitch

Glad that Jay O'Shea got to show his true capabilities. Its a pity that they have been wasted on an underperforming front line for Brisbane the last couple of years. That he has had the second most assists this year notwithstanding the errant nature of our forwards shows his ability to create chances. Would dearly love to keep him at Brisbane, but not holding much hope.

Just Media chat but Cummings hasn't been selected it seems. Davidson to make a comeback. Mooy a strong chance.

Behich, King and Davidson then. Behich was surely rested on the final day and doesn't have any issues.

I think we'll be allowed to pick and extended squad and may omit some after meeting at the initial camp.
