You can see how much inspiration Arnie takes from Guus.
The preparation of the penalties (studying Peru's keeper) to the switch to Redmayne if the game went to penalties is a Guus-type move.
I think a round of 16 is within reach if we take points from Tunisia/Denmark and push France to the final minute.
Well done Arnie.

+xMabil's penalty a highlight for me. Goalkeeper fucked him about pointing at the spot then fucking of for a drink of water and then wandering back at leisure. Then Mabil slotted it and have him an absolute gobful. Hahaha so good. Then Redmayne did the same thing by making the Peru player wait lol

+xPeru were so poor but let it sink it. Albeit penalties, we've held through with Rowles, Wright, an arguable unfit Mooy. Credit to them for lifting when it mattered. Rowles. Giant. Hearts fans will be delighted. As well as taggart being injured, no Rogic either.

+xStill haven't scrolled back to see ya'alls reaction. Peru were utter shite! What was up there? Check page 16 for a laugh. on Arnold. If FA sacks him, installs a foreigner a la Hiddink 2005 and we put in the exact same performance it would be hailed as a tactical masterclass. We were completely untroubled by 22nd ranked team in the world. Only lacked a finisher. Definitely not an Arnold fan but credit to the man. Got it done.

I've got to give it to arnie for this match, I feel like it was our best performance of the campaign. I was worried about penalties with Ryan and I didn't think he'd actually change the keeper, so kudos for him for making that change. Still would rather him gone, but they are qualified with their best performance so I'm happy.

Obviously we had practised penalties and Redmayne who is a noted penalty saver was always going to be there if it came to a shoot out.Must give credit to Arnie and the coaching staff for great planning.

To be honest I expected more from Peru, they must have really missed their best midfielder in Artun? Because they didnt play like the Peru that beat Colombia very impressively so overall they looked well of their best tonight.
I wonder how this would have gone if this was 2 legs? But you always have a chance in these one-off games and it suited Australia and Arnie's tactics knowing that they didn't have to play football to win when there is extra time and penalties available which we got the luck to get through in the end. Alot different from the last World Cup where they had to play to win and conceded from these 2 counter attack goals.
But credit to Arnie and players for finding a way to qualify even if it was via the backdoor again after a poor qualifying campaign in Asia, it shows what can happen when you buckle down when the chips are against you and try and find a way to get the result. Overall it was a poor game but we will have those conversations when the World Cup will come soon in November when the quality will go to the max because fighting and scrapping will not be enough if we want to win games at that level.
But for now let's enjoy the moment, a great day for Australian football we should cherish because qualifying for the World Cup will not be the same again after the like's of 2005 in Sydney.

By the way I think Hearts are lucky they signed Kye Rowles right now because if he didnt I could really see him get big interest from alot of clubs in Europe because with only 2 games at this level I thought he was outstanding in a high pressure environment.

I will preface this with the fact that i really dont like arnold as the national team coach, his tactics are very hard to watch when playing asian teams who we should dominate, it is pragmatic and uninspiring. However i think his pragmatism and defensive set up will be our best option with the squad we have at this world cup. if he can unearth a form striker (who knows, one of the kouls, cumdog maybe taggs will find form) a defensive, stop attacks before they start approach snagging goals could see us out of the group stage. I still dont want to see that. i would prefer Ange ball or an attacking approach but we have what we have.

Amazing how people change their pov when you win :) For all the negs GA has got here from many and I didn't have faith though didn't pay out on him a win of this importance I think he thouroughly deserves ! A few are eating their own poop. More away games than anyone I could recall getting to a WC - even more Peruvians there for this game might I add. Main piece of the puzzle is the players, injuries and all the boys put in these last 2 games and thats all I ever wanted to see. So many had quoted great if we didn't qualify as well, got to be kidding me, we needed it greatly the way the APL is going here at present. Rippa so so glad we have made it.

With the World Cup in the middle of our season, it should give the APL a boost as there'll be a number of players in the Cup, especially if NZ snag a win tomorrow as well.

He should take a chance on some of the U23’s and build around them and the likes of Tilio etc. Time to say goodbye to Lecks, Sains Duke etc. All been good servants but there is no more progression in them. Older unique talents like Mooy etc that offer quality and experience yes but otherwise use this to build for the next Asian Cup and also surprise our WC group opponents with high energy and attacking intent.

I don't think Arnold is capable of making such a big call, to leave out his son-in-law from his last World Cup. Any place for last WC's wunderkid Azani? :)

Mark my words .... just as years later, we still talk of the woodwork's role against Syria, similarly in years to come we'll remember the 12th woodwork defender against Peru. We were that close again to not going to the WC.

I’m not a big Arnie fan but … 2005. The golden generation under Hiddink qualified for the WC by beating the 5th best South American side on penalties. 2022. A team of nobodies under Arnold qualifies for the WC by beating the 5th best South American side on penalties. Just saying.

I'd add that I think he'd do well under Ange and make rapid improvement. That's where I think he should be going and last time I checked Celtic were looking for a tallish left-footed CB. He'd improve much more there than at Hearts.

So pumped!! That was awesome! I've been a big Arnie critic, but credit where credit is due, he did it! I thought starting Atkinson again was crazy. I thought having such an inexperienced CB pairing was crazy with Degenek unused. And I thought starting Duke was crazy too. Funnily enough I messaged a mate yesterday arvo on WhatsApp and told him that I thought that if it went to a penalty shootout that I thought Arnie would take off Ryan just before it and bring on Redmayne. I could imagine Redmayne doing the Wiggles routine, and that's exactly how it panned out. Can't wait for the World Cup!

+xI honestly don’t even know who rowles played for. But damn he was great. Agree Rowles was defensively very solid today... Atkinson the weakest link and suprised the Peruvians didn't try and exploit their left wing more... Karacic seems a lot more solid when he came on...Credit to Arnie, he had me screaming at 4am with the selection but he shut them down, played conservative football and despite their 1 or 2 unlucky chances we deserved to win in normal time... Credit where it is due although Peru were surprisingly poorer than I thought they would be... Who does that keeper with the Ned Kelly beard and the spastic dancing play for? Hahahahaha what an absolute masterstroke I was pissing myself laughing but he did enopught to put at least two of them off... well played Arnie you muncher.....
