+x+xI’m not a big Arnie fan but … 2005. The golden generation under Hiddink qualified for the WC by beating the 5th best South American side on penalties. 2022. A team of nobodies under Arnold qualifies for the WC by beating the 5th best South American side on penalties. Just saying. Alot different this time that it was a one off game lol. I think this definately helped us, the less football we have to play to make it the better lol. Schwarzer absolutely saved us in Montevideo. I’m glad we didn’t have to play in Lima

So the defining moment from the 2005 qualification moment in Sydney was John Aloisi running around the track with his shirt off until the team catches up to him. In contrast, the definining moment from today's 2022 qualification moment is Andrew Redmayne doing a squat with a stupefying look on his face waiting for the team to run to him and mob him.
If Redmayne realises that his instantaneous actions, after saving the penalty, would become etched in Aussie football legend, I wonder if he'd do it differently :)

+x+xMabil's penalty a highlight for me. Goalkeeper fucked him about pointing at the spot then fucking of for a drink of water and then wandering back at leisure. Then Mabil slotted it and have him an absolute gobful. Hahaha so good. Then Redmayne did the same thing by making the Peru player wait lol aha yeah, that was fun

+x+x+x+xBy the way I think Hearts are lucky they signed Kye Rowles right now because if he didnt I could really see him get big interest from alot of clubs in Europe because with only 2 games at this level I thought he was outstanding in a high pressure environment. Fully agree. From what he showed last season and in these big matches he definitely looks capable of playing at a higher level. I'd add that I think he'd do well under Ange and make rapid improvement. That's where I think he should be going and last time I checked Celtic were looking for a tallish left-footed CB. He'd improve much more there than at Hearts. If does well at Hearts then I can see him attract interest anyway. That's time lost though.

+x+x+xWith the World Cup in the middle of our season, it should give the APL a boost as there'll be a number of players in the Cup, especially if NZ snag a win tomorrow as well. It would be great for our region if the Kiwis won. I would have got up to watch it if it was on FTA. Are you talking about this mornings game AUS v PER? Because it was on free to air (Channel 10). No, tomorrow's game.

+xit suited Australia and Arnie's tactics knowing that they didn't have to play football to win when there is extra time and penalties available We weren't the team playing for penalties for most of the game mate Give me a break. We were the better team on the day in a cagey game. We were better than Peru full stop. It's amazing the lengths people will go to in order to justify their cultural cringe

I thought the referee was very good. The Peruvian supporters gave the game atmosphere and it is always a tough way to lose.

+x+x+x+xamerican commentators quite disrespectful to the roos Let em. Good chance they don't know us or how we play. Will make it more satisfying if we pull of the upset if it goes pear shaped i can always mute it Didn't seem like an upset the way the teams played, Grazor!

+xI thought the referee was very good. The Peruvian supporters gave the game atmosphere and it is always a tough way to lose. Agree the ref was fair however, late in the second half of ET he was giving Behich the hurry up when he got cramp yet allowed the Peru player 2 mins to get treated on the pitch without so much as a whisper???? Apart from that "invisible reffing" which was great to see... As for the Peru fans, 120 min non stop singing, wow must have been amazing atmosphere.... huge balls on the one middle aged dude in the Socceroos top in the midst of all that though, my eye kept on going to him all game ... Well played buddy ... respect to you whoever you are :)

+x+x+x+xHave just gone through their team one by one from the last qualifier they played against Paraguay.. this is where their team plays.. Orlando City (MLS) Boca Juniors (Argentina) Boca Juniors (Argentina) New York City (MLS) St Etienne (Ligue 1) Celta Vigo (La Liga) DC United (MLS) Malmo FF (Sweden) Sporting Cristal (Peru) Al Fateh (Saudi) Benevento (Serie B) Compared with our team from last qualifier... Real Sociedad (La Liga) Hearts (SPFL) Hearts (SPFL) Sunderland (Championship) Giresunspor (Turkey) Shanghai (CSL) Eintracht FF(Bundesliga) St Pauli (Bundi 2) Al-Faisaly (Saudi) Melb City (A League) Al-Wehda (Saudi) This didn't really prove your point as Peru looks heaps better on paper LOL It's not really a massive difference, and the game isn't being played in South America. This is pretty close to a 50/50 tie. More like 65-35. Peru are clear and deserved favourites, but anything can happen in a one off game on a neutral ground. That said, I just can’t see it. For all the (welcome) optimism in this thread, we’ve been dreadful for a long time now. It’s a team without a recognised goal scorer, with shaky defence and sluggish midfield, coached to a standstill by a pathetically conservative and fearful coach (oh arnie, how you have disappointed me). I’ll be amazed if we make it. Be amazed. We outplayed them.

+xCan i just say that all of our media, Fans and past players are fking pissing me off with the "oh Peru are going to spank us, we aren't as good as we used to be" (Schwarzer said this). The fact is other than the peak of the golden gen of 05-09, this is team on paper is about as good as any team we've had post 09. We did just set a world record as recently as 1 yr ago with this very same team. Also have any of these people actually looked at the Peruvian team???? It's very average. Their best player is a 32 yr old italian who plays in Serie B. Their 2nd best player is a 32 yr old who plays in Saudi. Gone are the days of their geniune international standard players in Fanfan, Guerroro and Pizarro who all helped lift Peru to their very high ranking of 22 (which is based on the last 5 yrs results). Furthermore we are playing in a ground we are familiar with and have already one a do or die game in... genuinely think we are favorites and will throw some money on us! You were correct.

+xIt'll either be: Peru absolutely maul us and some very smug types will say 'told you so.' We lose and were never really in it and the word 'dominated' gets thrown around. We just lose and the reaction is time for changes. We go to penalties and lose in heartbreak. We win on penalties and feel the escape. We win narrowly then get told we have zero chance at the WC and it's undeserved. By some miracle we batter them and the deafening silence will linger for a week amongst jubilation. Interesting to revisit your predictions and the responses, John.

Tbh though remate could’ve probably just saved them by standing there. Not sure it helped. He looked a bit dumb on the first few.
Stoked with him but not sure how much it worked considering he only saved the one. The most important one having said that.

A team of nobodies under Arnold qualifies for the WC by beating the 5th best South American side on penalties. Just saying. What one has to recognise is that the current team is a better team unit, than the individuals who comprise that team. They have been coached in a system. Hence, when they play senior football for Australia, they have been playing that system all through their development years. This helps team cohesion. Australia has been well-coached, but has had little time in camps, like some of the Asian opposition who mainly play in their domestic leagues. The Socceroos have improved in camp over four successive weeks and three successive games.

I wonder if Lyndon Dykes is not regretting his decision. Boyle and Souttar won't be!
I also wonder whether us being at the World Cup, and Italy not, could see Volpato and/or Circati commit to Australia after all. Especially since 2026 onwards is a 48 team world cup, so we should really expect to be in every world cup for a good time to come, as long as we aren't complacent.

They are hurt. Absolutely devastated they are. So close to making the world cup only to fall at the final hurdle. And to make it worse the Australian keeper that took their penalty shootout shots was dancing like a drunken bogan lol

I actually thought the ref may have given him a yellow for that, the intent was more obvious than their keeper desparately needing a dose of H2O lol....... My footy mates in our chat group we're already calling Redmayne Grobbelaar from the first pens :)

Surely Peru can’t be better than Colombia or Chile. They were rubbish.
Some posters on here were spot on. I was surprised how weak they were.

It's amazing the lengths people will go to in order to justify their cultural cringe Exactly.. as I say on this site ALL the time, we must be the only group of supporters in world football that talk their players DOWN! We have an inferiority complex, ange used to mention it when he started coaching us and it's even more ture today. The current team we have is nowhere near as bad as ppl make out infact many would get games in that 06 team. All of hrustic, rogic, mooy, Ryan, Souttar, Boyle, sainsbury and Irvine would have made that squad. And conversely as I said earlier before the match that peru team was not very good at all infact on paper we had a stronger lineup than them, albeit just. With rogic, souttar, sains and Taggart fit I think we'd have beaten them in normal time. Unfortunately most of our fans are ignorant and assumptive ... "oh peru finished 5th in south America, oh they must be better than us" without even looking at the fucking team sheet. Their best player is a 32 yr old Italian playing in serie b, 4 of their players play MLS and 2 in Sweden. I didn't see anyone in their side coming off a europa league final. Time to drop the inferiorty complex guys.. after all, this same group of players had a world record just 1 yr ago.

I'm shocked Australia qualified (but very happy they did).
To be honest, I completely wrote off the Socceroos, and I assumed Peru would beat the Socceroos easily, I didn't even bother to get up to watch the game I was so pessimistic.
When I woke up this morning, I by accident, stumbled across the ABC news website and I couldn't believe what I was reading, but well done to the Socceroos, they played their guts out, and proved that they can handle pressure. And like many here, I too wrote off Graham Arnold, but he did it under very difficult circumstances (COVID).
Obviously, it would have been preferable for the Socceroos to have qualified automatically by finishing in the top two, but it wasn't to be, however qualifying the hard way, does build character in a team.
Australia is a tough group ie. France, Denmark and Tunisia, but they have nothing to lose, and go in as underdogs.
