The reason AFL can command the big dollars is the game is national. The NRLs lack of vision since before Super League and the game selling out to the TV networks has put he game back twenty years.

The game was building nicely. Moving into Perth. Eventually Adelaide would have worked. By now we probably would have had a national game plus New Zealand with two teams and the chance of a team in PNG/NT. But the fuckers fucked it.

Tend to agree, although the expansion in mid 90s was just too rapid.

The A-league did it more efficiently. Brought in Western United and then Macarthur the following year. Last year WU won the title and Macarthur also had a good season.

You really want your new teams to do well and build a fanbase quickly along with crowds and merchandise so you don't have to prop them up for too long.

One of the problems with expansion is the player base is small, a fact acknowledged  by PVL, and is even worse as he said, cosidering the general population increase.  Further so many of the players in the NSW & Qcup competitions are already tied to NRL clubs and are there because they are not NRL ready. In fact 7 players in the Sunshine Coast Falcons Team this weekend are tied to the Storm.
I am also concerned that country kids are being brought to NRL clubs to play in their junior leages at a young age weakening the game in the country
It's  worse in England with participants  dropping  from over 60,000 in 2016 to 45,000 most recently.

It’s why I find it strange to add another Qld team. If we want to increase participation we need to do this in Perth and New Zealand. Adding first grade teams to those areas should encourage more involvement in the lower grades. I would assume.

You're right. Spread the base and develop the area. Redcliffe was already a RL stronghold so what is the long term strategy.

I'm only speculating here, but the decision to grant Dolphins a licence was at the beginning of covid pandemic where you hard hard border to both WA and NZ. NRL knew they couldn't delay expansion so they granted it to a QLD or NSW team.

The rest was the fact that they felt Dolphins had a strong financial standing and stand on their own 2 feet quicker than most other options.

Again, just my thoughts. But seems logical.

I think it was focused more on selling the game in broadcast deals rather than junior development.

The NRL is very keen on a WA team and I reckon next licence is theirs. Especially with covid now manageable as we "learn to live with it"

You have to admit.... WA's hard border didn't help any sporting teams or any sporting administration that was looking to move in there....

That is where the problem lies.. V'Landys cannot see as a game for the people, rather he sees NRL as a "product" owned by a corporation to make a profit for its stakeholders. Thus the reason behind the six again and other various rule alterations, to lure more punters to the spectacle giving it a greater selling appeal.

At the height of COVID the NSW/Qld border was hard, so no guarantees there. Surely the Commission cannot be so short sighted on a long term decision.

Redcliffe in a Rugby League stronghold, no real broadcast advance without team 18 and then only with extra games or a new Market

God I hate rugby....
I try to watch it, I try to understand it, but no....
I will never understand the rules or understand what I am watching.

They may as well call it lottery. Coz no one has any idea what the hell is going on and when the ref blows his whistle, its literally a lotteries to what the rule is....

I'm assuming anything less than 2m forward is a legitimate back pass?

And there's no offside on your winger when you kick cross field?

Seems to me when you can't officiate in League, you have a job in Union....

I dont typically, but every once in a while I try to give it another go, only to be as bewildered as the previous time.

Im curious though....So many people in attendance.

Do they just support what is decided on the field by the ref? It seems very easy for the ref to decide possession and ultimately the result.

It seems we whinge about rugby league refs deciding games, but one look at union and its all brought into perspective.

I have had a great week.

Icing on the cake is a reserve grade win, but even more important Canberra dispatching Parra in style.

Something special about the Canberra side 2 props with styled long hair and a redhead on the bench.

Seagulls have a bit more skill, style and intelligence.

AFL is what happens when you over complicate "force'm back kicking duels" to distract the teachers while kids have a quick smoke behind the weathershed (apparently).

On the Rugby, I rarely watch it, but I watched the last 20 mins.

The NRL show pony refs need to lift their game, the refs performance was a master class in attention seeking ridiculous decisions, all he needed was a bunker that took 10 minutes to review every decision and the game would have been a perfect advertisement for seagulls fighting over a chip.

One thing Rubgy has always done exceptionally well is confuse spectators with a myrid of obscure rules. Just equip the ref with a coin to toss and the game will flow.

League, soccer, cricket, NFL all good to watch.

Good to play, most sports, tried most things that don't involve a horse, a plane, or a motor.

And water sking which did involve a motor was fun.
