+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x@ The_Wookie Doesn' t bode well for the rest of the season , does it ? Take out WU and Macarthur, and we'd already be back up above pre-Covid levels. And if the big crowd-pullers like MV, Sydney and WSW all have good seasons, I think we'll end with a respectable average. It's just the botched expansion sides that screw up the average. If they had gone for, say, Canberra and Wollongong and both got Mariners/Wellington-esque crowds, the A-League would be doing OK. Maybe the new FFA were thinking more about the next tv contract when they gave WU and macarthur their licences , rather than crowds . In any case , what do you consider to be a "respectable average " ? This thread is not worth reading if you’re gonna troll every week. I don't like the guy but you've gotta be concerned when the reigning Australia Cup holder and Premier are both getting NPL sized crowds so early in the season? Legit doesn't bother me if they can afford to pay their bills. Anyone who is an advocate of P&R should understand these numbers will be the norm in the future. Usual disclaimer for the forum: I 100% agree that expansion was botched, was done purely for the license fee money and that both teams are a disaster and that SM should be in the league over WU Two separate issue in my view.... and Im not Aleague bashing on purpose here but a closed off league with franchises by necessity MUST have financial appeal to its investors otherwise it will fold. Even though it is only now emerging from the lowpoint of administrative civil war and Covid, the A-League doesn't seem to have had any shortage of investors in recent years, willing to plough serious cash into the league: the two expansion sides (selected from a field of 10-12 suitors), Silverlake, the recent purchases of the Mariners and Adelaide, investment in Victory. Even Newcastle looks like it may have found a buyer at long last. In terms of ownership, it's Perth and Brisbane that are presently the deadweights, killing formerly thriving clubs with either questionable management (Sage) or outright neglect (Bakries). If I were the APL my priority would be to find new owners for these clubs as a way of revitalising them (a proper stadium in Brisbane wouldn't hurt either, although it would obviously require a massive outlay). WU will hopefully get a boost whenever their new stadium gets off the ground. I don't know what the solution for Macarthur is, other than put a good team on the park and hope it pays off in the long-term with the populaiton growth in that area. CCM haven't been purchased, just a weird partnership for 3 years has been created Unless I've missed something, the Adelaide sale hasn't actually happened. Perth and Newcastle are both for Sale for years now and Brisbane would, if anyone ever met their price. So, only 5 of the 12. Richard Peil bought the Mariners from Mike Charlesworth. And this report suggests that the APL are doing due diligence on multiple ownership options for the Jets: https://www.newcastleherald.com.au/story/7900989/jets-ownership-remains-in-holding-pattern-for-third-a-league-season/

The article says exactly what I said it did: there are multiple parties interested in buying out the Jets, and the APL are currently in the process of doing due diligence on them, which will take some time to carry out. Which is good, since you don't want a repeat of the Martin Lee situation. That goes to prove my initial point, which is there are a lot of cashed-up groups out there interested in investing in the A-League.

In summary Peil is covering the running costs for 3 years, hoping to sell $800k players per year, and if he hits KPI's can buy out Charlesworth then.

It was always the case the Charlesworth was going to hold onto the property. This is a really an important point, the owners own a license to participate in the A-League. That is the thing of value they own, and what they will try to onsell at a profit. Anything else, like property, is owned by the club owners, but the football team really only has access to that property at the behest of the owner, as soon as the license is sold, the football team no longer has any special association with the property, because it is not owned by the "club" - it's owned by the club owner - an important distinction.

Is the Aleague promoting WU vs Macarthur as the Community Shield match? Current Champions vs Cup Winners? Either way you'd think with silverware in their portable cabinets then these non-effnik clubs should draw at least double a NPL final ---- at least 10K, anything less is just rubbish isn't it? Or is it because some Melbournians prefer Friday night sport but not ALL Melbournians do. Maybe its still because of the floods or because of Covid, the Aleague civil war, over policing of fans, the bushfires two years ago perhaps?????

A Community Shield/Super Cup style match should be a stand-alone curtain-raiser for the season. It surprises me FA hasn't done this already, to be honest. It could be a tidy little earner as long as it's not the two expansion clubs with no fans playing in it.

Agree that this week's game is a big test for Sydney fans. Hopefully they can get at least 15k. Weather is a factor again, since rain is predicted, but probably less than the monsoonal storm that blighted the Big Blue.

Or is it because some Melbournians prefer Friday night sport but not ALL Melbournians do. Maybe its still because of the floods or because of Covid, the Aleague civil war, over policing of fans, the bushfires two years ago perhaps????? We all know it's rubbish. Who are you ranting to?

+x+x+x+xRd 3 western vs bulls 2k Newcastle vs Wellington 8k wsw vs roar 11k Melbourne derby 21k Sydney vs Adelaide 11k Ccm vs Perth 7k WU v Bulls: 4,500 - (I talked last week how Melburnians prefer Friday night sport over Sunday afternoon, so their numbers should be a little better). Jets v Nix: 9,000 (A win last week hopefully means a few extra turn up). WSW v BR 9,000 (Should really be 15,000, but WSW fans are hopeless). Derby: 27,000 (as stated on another thread, game is close to a sellout). Sydney v Adelaide: 12,000 (big test for Sydney fans this week). CCM v Perth: 6,500 (same same for CCM). +xIt was always the case the Charlesworth was going to hold onto the property. That's the case with any number of overseas clubs though. That's why there were so many cases of English club owners personally profiting from selling the ground and building a new one way out of town, under the guise of modernising facilities. Club ownership is a messy thing wherever you go, particularly since they are rarely profitable ventures in and of themselves.

Incredibly, these two teams have won the most recently awarded major trophies in Australia.

+xIncredibly, these two teams have won the most recently awarded major trophies in Australia. A good observation bettega . It seems a lot of people on here have been very critical of the current FA for giving WU & Macarthur their licences . However it seems that a lot of people on here also say they want teams to be judged primarily on their "on field " performance . So which is it ?

+x+x23k at the Melbourne derby 7k at Newcastle vs Wellington 9.5k at wonderland vs Brisbane an average of 13k across the 3 games which isn't too shabby The comp needs to rebuild and go further forward than ever before. Preceding this season was the three year covid era, just before that was the three year period of the federations vs FFA standoff, whereby the federations scratched, clawed and were overly determined to stay in the vile stoneage and hold the football code back for as long as possible, so fat fucks keep lining they're pockets. If its not about money, they have no interest. That subject matter was thoroughly touched on back in the day. WU need a home stadium, it better come next season whatever it looks like. Bring on the NSD cause I for one won't pay a ticket to watch a game yet, until there is real evidence of a true commitment that the game wants to move forward in ways that the fans and potential fans demand over many years. Otherwise for me personally, even though I do Paramount+ and Ch10, this football code and the pyramid system is too fractured to invest more substantially, for starters a season ticket. In the meantime, myself and some others watch on tv or do other things.

+x+x23k at the Melbourne derby 7k at Newcastle vs Wellington 9.5k at wonderland vs Brisbane an average of 13k across the 3 games which isn't too shabby And with the perennial low crowd clubs featuring on Friday night together, the average substantially pulled down. Smurfs need to get 15k on a wet Sydney afternoon and the Mariners need to get 8K to obliterate the rubbish crowd for the Gallop/Fox Sports legacy of Western United Fraudsters and Macarthur Bullsh1tters.

The " new " FA gave out the licences to WU and Macarthur .
One can only assume they were satisfied to give the licences to WU and Macarthur .

It is what it is, this is where the league currently finds itself, and while we might see occasional rises from year to year, I wouldn't be counting on seeing anything more than what we see now. Wanderers has its new stadium, SFC now has its new stadium - this is as good as the league gets.
Also, a quick flick through the seasons from the very start will back up what I'm saying.
First four seasons of the new league, attendances were pretty solid all round.
Then the next three seasons we had the Gold Coast/Palmer seasons, and there was a noticeable dip.
Then Wanderers replaced GCU, and we experienced two relatively strong seasons after that.
Then we experienced 8 consecutive dips in attendances.
There will be a bump this season, maybe we get another one next season, or the season after, but this is it, this is where we are. No one should be expecting some out-of-the blue jump in metrics, it just won't happen.

The establishment must eventually realize that it needs every support from all quarters. Not only a NSD, but sooner rather than later a Pro/Rel. This will bring back some big clubs and a new lot of supporters, more passion for the game. There is no forsight with these business types.
