I don’t think it’s that grim. We failed at the T20 due to one match and bad selections really. NZ pumped us by too much, a rain washout and picking whatsisname whoever the fuck he is who got nothing all series above Green and leaving Starc out of the last match, wtf were they thinking.

But in the big boys game remember we beat Pakistan in Pakistan where every test went down to the last session.

Long game I think we’re behind India in India, maybe SA in SA and England in England, but it’s been like that for decades. Short form (both), it’s a yearly or less thing.

I think the washout helped rather than hindered. Our form suggested we were unlikely to beat England.
Our inability to crush the minnows to better our NRR was telling
The problem with the older players is that when there is a widening between meaningful contributions one reasonable performance guarantees on going selection. There is no regeneration of the team and we end up in the position we are.

29 of the top 30 for 2023 named.
No Wakeham.
Rajab and Reynolds train and trial.
Brandon Clarke is thge back up hooker.
Burto, Flano and BBO in the halves, we might not have the big O. But we have 3 Os.

Overall we seem to have strengthened the forwards.

A lot of fringe NRL players are no longer at the club.

I have thought for a few seasons that our batting was drifting south and we never fully recovered from sandpaper-gate.

In particular we lack a really great opening batting partnership, and all great teams have them.

But the team can't be great or top dog all of the time.

I give England and India a good chance of beating us in test cricket here.  Probably something like 2-1 over an exciting 5 test series and beating us 5-0 on home turf.

1-2   good young batsmen or some of our key men finding form can change that.

Inparticular I have some question marks about the quality of batting and bowling at shield level, a step down from the eras where we were stronger.

A quality crop of young bstsmen churning out runs at shield level and surviving against good spells of bowling will easy my concerns.

Hope so.
With Mahoney now leading players onto the ball, their size will be important.

In today's game, teams need to decide if they want their forwards to stand in tackles and make PC metres at the expense of a slow PTB vs taking the tackle and playing the ball quickly.

Penrith could do both these days but built their game over the last 4 or so years with the latter. Quick PTB and get a roll on. It also gives Cleary more time on 5th tackle kicks.

We tend to go for the slow PTB option.

I'm not convinced it's the better way. Having the ability to play both ways for the full 80mins is what I believe to be the most effective.

Curious with how Ciraldo shapes this team.

Rumour is Gus and CC want to clear space to promote from within. There’ll be no more big names for ‘23. But they want those they see as long term Dogs in our lower grades in the 30 to be primed for ‘24, when they’ll he joined with some names we’re talking to right now.

Allen is next, be gone before season starts, quite a few others who already know they wont be here in ‘24 will be released if they secure long term deals elsewhere which they’ve been encouraged to seek. You can guess the names.

If someone we’re looking at for ‘24 becomes available for ‘23 we’ll have the space.

Kind of weird that we signed Hazye Perham and let Schoupp go.
But I think Perham is more of a winger.

If Allen goes  I hope we promote Credence Toia.

We have a few players pushing for hooker/ half on train and trial.

BBO is out injured until July / August. We need to add a player.

Skelton, Alamotti and  Casey can cover centre, I can see the wisdom of freeing up a few slots.

Josh Reynolds might be a chance.

The uninjured halves are Burton and Flanagan.

Available hookers Mahoney and Clarke.

This is the year of Allamoti. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts the year at centre. If Pangai stays fit he would be perfect on that edge with Kiraz on that wing.
If Skelton has a big ore season he could lock down a spot on the other side. With Kiks and Fox. But the safe option is Burns who has the finesse to put Fox away.

Best draw for a long time. Cows, Chickens, Storm and Panthers only once. Plus plenty of long turnarounds. With a good start we could push for top four.

Lol. As much as I'd like to see us do a 2022 Cowboys turnaround, I think I will keep my hopes on scraping into the top 8 and anything better will be a bonus!

A lot depends on our halves, the rest of the side is now strong enough to give the halves a fighting chance.

There are also some question marks on our defence especially with Jacko retiring.

At least the side should  finally have the ability to score lots of trys and post some big scores.

We certainly have the forwards to give the lives space. I’m very confident about this season. As for our defence. I’m sure Ciro will get that right.

Gus seems happy with what he is seeing at training.

I am also confident because Gus being completely wrong seems unlikely.

Flanno is a better fit for our attack this season, because he will not need to create much.
Reed and the edge forwards should spark a lot of the attack, Foxy will convert any half chances.

Flanno needs to pass to Burto or take the line on. Not much else. I agree, he is our best option at half. I’m expecting Mahoney to create a lot from dummy half. That will give Flanno and Burto more time and space. I hope we play an up tempo game. Quick play the balls and fast forwards pushing in behind the ruck. That should condense the defence giving our edges plenty of space.

Converting training drills into gameday plays is the biggest thing for me.

I actually wish we could play an early trial in mid Dec and then one again early Feb. It will give you an idea if the players can do the drills in game conditions under pressure.

My concern is we will still be clunky.

Are the Wannabies the biggest disgrace in Australian sport?

They keep talking themselves up about turning a corner and all these new players as well as capped players bolstering their team and yet they just keep getting done against 2nd tier nations.

They are making Bernard Tomic synonymous with fortitude!

We don't know what Gus saw that made him happy.

What I hope he saw is.

1. Better fitness, more intensity faster line speed.
2. Better structure, speed and execution in attack.
3. An improvement in skill levels.
4. More variety in attack.
5. Better teamwork and decision making in defence.

If we lift the standards in one area it drags other areas up and makes training closer to the game day experience.

What I really hope to see initially in 2023 is- 1 .and 5.

If our linespeed fitness and intensity is up in defence, we work as a team and make better decisions that is a big step forward.

In 2022 soft defence othen meant more ball and field position for the opposition and little petrol in the tank when we finally got the ball.

Pressure the opposition attack, we should have more possession and field position and some opportunities to score cheap tries off turnovers/intercepts.

Then step 2 is get better at converting opportunities into points.

Step 1 sets up step 2, by creating opportunities and building confidence.
