Let France dictate after we conceded did as they please no pressure on them they build from the back that was disappointing back for we're atrocious school boy stuff poor marking we we're 1 versus 2 and still they won the ball.Mooy big disappointment gave the ball away to much.

The 3rd goal though. Ryan's on his line and Mbappe is about 7m away from the goal. I hardly think he's going to try and come out there with two centre backs there.

The 4th is somewhat similar. I don't know why Ryan doesn't attempt a dive there. It's a very swift header from close range.

Thankfully Ryan made a very good save at the end. Feeling vindicated by hindsight is a foolish mindset. Who knows what another keeper would've done.

It's disappointing that there seemed to be no strategy at all. Apart from the (great) first 20 min, we were always in two minds on whether to press or park the bus. We ended up doing neither. The second half was really hard to watch.

Makes one pine for the glory days of Bert Van Marwijk. We were disgustingly dour and couldn't score, bit at least we were tough to break down.

So who is the next socceroos coach?

Yeah, that's the problem with Australian football, not the fact that player development has been in a death spiral since 2005

Yeah, blame everyone and everything except Arnold and Ryan. I'm genuinely asking, why are they so untouchable and beyond reproach in your view?

Saudis Tunisians led the way to play - go hard every second
We sit back too much hardly forcing errors or cutting off enough ball

Completely agree. What happened to Arnold’s statement about being physical and putting pressure on France. Instead we sit back in a 451, dropping deeper and deeper all the time, and then when we do win the ball the first move is to pass backwards. Have to agree with Kewell’s comments about needing more movement from players forward if the ball when we are in possession and looking to turn France around. Too easy for France facing forward all the time, not having to worry about players running in behind.

Just saw Arnold’s interview. Fuck me, what a clown. His tactics for this game were, as in most of the games he has coached Australia, just abysmal.

Ryan is no good anyway if his back line are complete an utter shit. You've seen that in  patches in the EPL. Souttar started well, played well. Rowles and Atkinson though, its no wonder we still get to see Behich every bloody WC cycle. Pretty sure nobody in Australian coaching fraternity knows what a good RB/LB looks like

It's very disappointing how we stepped of the gas. Don't know what was up with that. The first two goals were shocking lapses of concentration.

There was the moment just before the third where we had to make some subs. I wish Devlin had come on around then. Cummings not involved much.

I'd like to know what the instructions and plan were around those stages.

Have to agree. The tactics were poor. Our team is mediocre, but we’ve seen so many teams over the years made up of mediocre individuals play very well as a unit and be tough to beat against much stronger opposition. I just don’t think Graham knows how to do park the bus and counter OR all out attack well.

Look I can agree with a lot of that - but France are an awesome team even without some players missing the world cup. We were spanked and to be honest I think the score flattered us.

I mean Rowles and Souttar have never played with each other before. Injured again but having Elder out there would offer a pretty decent alternative to Behich.

We can only speculate how we may have been with Boyle.

It's good Bosnich is asking the tough questions. Robbie Slater may have his say or piece but the press have been way too quite or Arnold compared to Ange. It's bloody disappointing at times that the own house isn't in order.

I don't feel tonight was an implosion though. Maybe it's because we scored or France were really just excellent. We move on to the next game.

There is a stark contrast between how Saudi Arabia changed their football and how the FFA have done since it came in as the governing body.

The Saudis were always a technically gifted footballing nation but lacked the mentality and physicality to compete on the world stage.

The Australians were always a mentally strong and physically footballing nation but lacked tactical and technical prowess.

The Saudis have obviously fixed their side by improving on their physical & mental side of the game.

The FFA through the baby out with the bathwater by shutting down the AIS and ushering in a development curriculum that wiped away our only strengths as a footballing nation in favour of technique which they have obviously failed to implement.

The FFA have royally fucked Australian Football.

I find him a very simplistic commentator - don't do what you did and that won't happen. Where he does shine is asking the 'long-term' questions. We got spanked by a quality side. Why are they a quality side and what can Australia do the eventually emulate that? I doubt anything will change in that regard - but they are the questions that need to be addressed.

This is ridiculous nonsense. Of course every true football fan in Australia would want us to qualify.

I would rather miss out on qualifying for a WC if it meant a big shake-up in how we organise the game here and how the NT is managed, which leads to improved performances at WC compared with what we've seen for the last decade.

There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

Watching our goal over and over. Very enjoyable and well played. Great pass by Souttar. There's so much work to do. A more scrutinised time will come for Arnold but the evidence is clear it's time for a change. I appreciate what he's done but it feels too much of an anchor.

First two French goals in particular avoidable. Perhaps a fit Karacic gets to Mbappe on the 4th. I found us standoffish which saw the 3rd also creep through.

King is too raw to replace Behich but I'm so done with him after this tournament.

Is this just matter in the universe and butterfly effect? It seems Leckie's cross was deflected by Rabiot. Konate was busy on Duke which was probably the correct thing. God Pavard looked bad there. Was with Goodwin and trotted into the dome. He went to cover McGree.

Having all this football at once is incredibly insightful.

As for Ryan he gets paid to have the best seat in the house as a spectator.

Ok no goals are his fault but I haven’t seen him move towards a shot or cross in years.

He watches everything go on around him then looks dejected.

Looking at todays game I would have been dejected too.  As a keeper you rely on the defenders putting pressure on the attacker that limits the attackers options on where they can strike at goal.  That allows the keeper to adjust his position and or react to his advantage.  Today the French players could chose where they could place the ball into the net because they were invariably under very little pressure and they were close in which makes it doubly hard for the keeper.  In order to make a save today Ryan had to rely on a weak or misplaced effort.

Ryan has his faults as a keeper just like every keeper has.   In my view Ryan is a bit too reactive.  He sets himself and seems to wait that fraction of a second trying to see where the ball is going before starting to move to it.  That reduces the area that he can cover which is critical especially with shots taken from close in.  I think he needs to become more intuitive.

This makes the assumption we learn from our mistakes. Been in the game for a long time and am yet to see us build for the future. I think some English commentator said it best "Aus football always seems to be in existential crisis".

You are the coach. You are about to play the best striking unit in the world. You plan to sit deep and defend most of the game. Do you:
a. Pick your best shot stopper?
b. Pick a sweeper keeper?

Exactly.. playing the best team in the world qjo we are going to concede a tonne of possession to... wtf would we not pick objectively our best shot stopper to start, let alone even make the squad?!

In qualifying against say a Thailand who'll play on the break can 100% see why we'd play ryan but not against France when we have a great shotstopper in langerak
