Will be interesting to see if Wakes makes it in the NRL.

I am 50/50, he has some talent and has some good games, but also a lot of ordinary games.

Tigers must want a replacement for Mbye.

Was thinking similar… Mbye without the big mouth…

Missed Johns and Ryan. When I started watching, Dowling was fullback, and we had Gary, Graham and Mark Hughes.

One unfashionable player who is a favorite of mine is Reado. Stan Culter also a forgotten favorite.

Fullback is one position where we have had a lot of great players.

Also prop, best props I saw, Billy Noonan, Peter Kelly and the Ogre.  Those guys won a lot of games by finishing on top in the middle.

So many great players, and just as important, nice guys over the years.

All worthy nominees. We've had so many that gave us so much pleasure. another one from our dark years, Ray Gartner. He won , I think it was Herald player of the year, in the early sixties in a very weak team. I still remember the presentation in the old leagues auditorium.

What a lot of the younger supporters don't realise, that in this day and age the rules have been modified to take a lot of the "hardness" out of the game, but it's understandable that the NRL have to legally take the "duty of care" route due to possible litigation. In the ARL days up until the 90's the big forwards used to belt each other into submission at the same time snapping the smaller nimble players in half and it made for smarter players to avoid being crunched.  The one thing I am glad for is that the NRL have progressivly removed the thuggery from the game which is a good thing, unfortunately they have taken too much from the toughness and grit of the contest.

I think what a lot of people forget when talking about “hardness” is that in the modern game there’s rock hard professional athletes running at each other with a 20m gap between then and there’s no easy runs because the wingers are just as hard, sometimes harder, than the front rowers.

Sure, modern players mightnt have survived the head highs, knees, elbows and brawls of the old days, but yesterdays players wouldnt get up after running into Vil Kikau with a 20m runup either.

Is it the ‘hardness’ or the complete violence that was common when my dad played 1st grade in the 60/70s???…

Unfortunately a lot of people equate violence with toughness. Players of all eras were tough and needed to be. What's  changed is a lot of the gratuitous  violence has been eliminated from the game.

I don't  think anyone forgets or denies what you say. The change is more about training, fitness and professionalism than hardness or toughness. The players of all eras were tough and hard.

True, I wasn't implying todays players were less tough they just removed the "hardness", like the massive collisions that were previously deemed to be part of the game. What I don't want to see is a game where from No.1 through to No.13 be all the same size, shape and skill sets where the fullback, halfback and prop can all interchange and the spectators would be none the wiser.

I am 99% sure that  my aunt's best friend was married to Ray.

My aunt knew Ray and said that he was a top bloke.

My aunt and girl cousin supported the dogs...

My relos lived in Greenachre I assumed that they were all Dogs fans. But my uncle went for Manly and even worse the boy cousin went for the Roosters. Those blokes made a lot of bad decisions. I think that the lad eventually saw the light and went for the Dogs.

Had my relos lived in Manly or Bondi I would have become a dogs fan anyway.

Potter said that we are mainly working on defence, that is good news.

We had patches of good attack the round 14, 34-4 win over Parra being the game when we did best.
Throw in Mahoney and Kicks, they will improve the attack a lot.

If we defend well, and execute a good kicking game, we will be hard to beat, and rarely out of the game with 20 mins to go.

Foxy scoring off a Burto kick is always a threat, Kicks is always a threat.

14-16 points behind with 20 mins to go, I think we can drag  back the odd game, any closer and we are definitely in it.

Scrums... another bastardisation of the modern game and another pet peeve of mine. They should be returned to the function of their original intent and configuration. When a team knocks on and the defending team also fail to clean up the lost ball and also knock on, why are they still given the advantage when they also made a infringement. This is where the only advantage the team that failed to capitalise on the original infringement get, is to feed the ball into the scrum after which both teams then have an equal opportunity to gain possession.  While I'm at it, if the NRL want to persist in the six again rule, then instead of continuing play and just resetting the tackle count, play should stop, and then reset the tackle count. If the offending team are switched on they can quickly reset their defensive line. I believe this would stop referees quickly gassing one side giving them an opportunity to try and salvage a game

I was born in Bankstown and grew up in Bankstown then Punchbowl. All family were Berries supporters so I was not contaminated in my youth. I spent the first 63 years of my life living in the district before I moved to Queensland. My son's and grandsons up here are all staunch Bulldog supporters.

I literally grew up in the Turvey Tavern, directly opposite Turvey Park…
When we moved to Sydney in 83 my Dad told me the Mortimer boys were from where I was born and played in park across the road (where I broke my arm the first time of 3)….
I was a Dogs fan from that moment…
Good timing…

Take care when you venture over to TK. The question was raised if the BDP still existed. I told them it was alive and well but when asked for the IP I have ignored.

Yes, and it must frustrate them that the place is infested with player and personal abuse over substance. A classic schoolyard debating method.

Young gun signed from the Broncos Karl O, 18 year old 5/8.

Dispute with the Broncos he wanted to be in their top 30, Broncos and Dolphins in off season dispute over this kid.

We paid $500,000 to the Broncos release fee, I'm guessing straight into our top 30, and no free drinks for Dman at Laundry pups this week. Next week should be ok, your noble sacrifice is noted.

Yes apparently Villi thought that he could catch any old pigeon, and turn into a carrier pigeon.

Now he has a house full of bird poo, and is too busy to post here.

He certainly can hit defensively. Half of his highlight reel is him folding some c***.

I can see why The Broncs wanted to make him a #13, he wanted to play #6, which isn’t gonna happen at The Dogs and surely he knows this. Probably hoping to make it as a #7. But I reckon before his 4 years are up he’ll be a #13 and potentially a great one.

I think, from the admittedly very little I’ve seen of him, he’s a bit like Schuster.

Talented with the ball, hits like a truck, thinks he’s a #6, wants to be a #6, but….. he’s really a 11, 12 or in his case 13.

Broncs were right. Hopefully, and I bet he did, Gus promised him ever opportunity to make it as a #6, knowing when he’s had said opportunity… in Reggies… he’ll want to play #13 in NRL.

No doubt coach and player often have differing views…

Who was the last bloke that thought they were a half but coach didn’t and they then made it big as a half???,..
