I got a bad feeling in my gut about this game but I had that same feeling pre-WC. This team has a habit of surprising. Sum of the parts and all that. I hope that carries on.

yer I think we all tend to think this way and understandable.
Like any game its on the day out on the pitch - WC was on neutral ground whereas this as mentioned on home turf is on their side But they also would have the pressure to perfom not only for the crowd but places looking ahead, touch wood the nerves will stifle some of them not being on their club form game.

We friggin need Irvines work rate - good its just precautionary.

haha good mention though.
This is big for us hallowed turf and the Poms have 17-game unbeaten run at Wembley in all competitions :(
Haven't most of our NT games there been at like Upton Park the Win, Stadium of Light, Craven Cottage for eg......

I was with a couple of fellow playing mates this morn at golf, 1 predicted 3 down by HT :(
I'm at a loss or more so hesitant to make any call but am nervous what could happen, why am I like this when we faced just as good or better (for eg eventual winners) at the WC haha.

For me it’s cos of Ange being in epl that I’m watching more games and can see how in form Pom NT players are. Kane going well at Bayern, Grealish, Maddison etc could have a field day on home turf 😬

on other hand players like Souttar will be looking to prove a point to his unfavorable coach at Leicester and will try to defend/impress like nothing else

Hope this game doesn't degenerate into repetitive waves of breaking down low block practice for the Poms.

Shame we are playing the Kiwis in Europe.

I'd rather play a team playing a different style - like Portugal, who would test our two very tall CBs in slick attacking interplay on the edge of the pen box .

Another opponent  could be the enigmatic Egypt. They often do well in intra-African comps, but rarely qualify for WCs.

South Africa could be another opponent?

We play the Kiwis too much and it will be rare if we play them in any WCQs.

They've got Bosnia tomorrow and will be tricky to book with all these games these days. I'd like to play them. I think Estonia were available until Thailand got a game against them. I doubt Asia will put together a Nations League as they've got their own regional cups and Asian games.

Arab Cup, Gulf Cup. The array of things they have. It'd be great to see our extended players have games like the EAFF Cup we had in 2013, which saw a lot of future players get exposure.

Only 1 tweet about the Palestine game being played in the UAE. Hopefully get that confirmed to avoid disruptions.

Tuesdays sees Bangladesh Maldives second leg currently at 1:1.

https://youtu.be/A7wYOhCf00U?si=y3CTee_hM5OvBFS5

Highlights here. Two late goals. Maldives are known as the Red Snappers. Logistically it would've been nice to get Hong Kong or Singapore.

It would be good for our players to have more games like they do in the ME.

ATM we've had such high calibre opposition since and during the second round of the  Qatar WCQs, there is quite a big step up for Aussie players new to international football.

Also, the Socceroos weren't playing well against the Asian  opposition we had in the last few months before the WC. I can still remember Jeggo conceding that soft penally against China, which derailed our WCQ  campaign for Qatar. I'm not sure he has been selected again?

Arnie's selection strategy, given we don't have many players playing top level UEFA football, has been to fast track players from underage international football, via the Olyroos and Under 20s. It has been quite a sound strategy given our modest playing stocks.

Moreover, given our better Aussie coaches like Ange, Muscat, Paddy K have been operating overseas, they haven't brought many Aussies into their club squads. This is despite Ange telling the Socceroos a few days that being an Aussie footballer, is generally looked down on in Europe  - and thus  using being  underestimated as an advantage.

However, there are some significant football stakeholders in UEFA, in the likes of Netherlands and Denmark, that recognise the ongoing success of the Aussie international team  punching above our weight. They laud good Socceroo collective  performances as a team unit.

Another successful Arnie strategy, has been to play a Socceroo line up, where every member is  strong in Ball Possession Opposition. Players like Goodwin, Duke, Leckie, Metcalfe, McGree, Boyle, are all very good at ball winning and applying pressure in closing down space in advanced positions on the pitch when the opposition has the ball.

Arnie coaching the Olyroos as well as the Socceroos has been a sound decision.

Good ball players like Mabil, who is nowhere as good when the other team has the ball, and particulalry the technically gifted Hrustic, will forever battle to get into Arnie's starting line up.

Sadly, Hrustic is a comparatively slow thinking player. He is often not on the same wave length as his  teammates with a high level of game sense - Goodwin, Duke, Irvine, Behich et al. This is despite Hrustic's class on the ball. I just wish he was more effective when the opposition has the ball, because with Rogic and Mooy's retirement we need technicians. Nearly all the teams we've played for  some time have been more proficient  technically than  us.

Another day and another penalty shoot-out victory for the Young Socceroos, who beat the Netherlands 6-5 at the Marbella Week of Football Tournament. Australia defeated European giants France 5-2 on penalties in their opening match in Spain and they were at it again on Sunday (AEDT).

The Young Socceroos – featuring nine A-Leagues-based players in the starting XI – trailed the Netherlands 1-0 before Brisbane Roar sensation Thomas Waddingham equalised in the 58th minute to eventually force penalties.

The technical gifted Hrustic. You mean a gift for the opposition team?  He usually would lose ball posession in the middle of the pitch then everyone have to waste their energy to run back. He did score against Japan & UAE but the liability is outweighed. @ the world cup we might as well played with 10 men when he came on.

Gee you really hate Hrustic don't you. He was playing injured before & during the WC. He's been outstanding for us on a number of occasions & as you said, he scored some important goals for us in Qualification. Hopefully he can start playing again for Verona or find another club, because he can still be a weapon for us - he's only 27

Yer Hrustic isn’t that bad whereas who  I think does lose the ball in attack more is Mabil.
He over does it many times taking on 2/3 defenders when a simple give In good position would have us going into the danger zone easily but he over does it most times the way I see it.

I think it is terrific you posted these good news stories, Midfielder.

There are so many bad news stories about Aus football, or no media coverage whatsoever for football stories that should be covered, it is a pleasant surprise  to see the Young Socceroos beat both these powerhouses.

Poignantly, France and Netherlands are two of the four based European powerhouses the Aus football curriculum is based on. It is a massive reason why the Socceroos are better collectively as a team unit than the players' individual qualities who make up Aus teams.

Mabil at times worries defenders with his dribbling qualities.

Also, when Mabil first came into the team he scored  goals that the likes of Kruse and Leckie had been missing when they played on the wing.  His clinical finishing was a pleasant surprise.

One has to  laud players for their strengths.

I've elucidated a few of Hrustic's weaknesses, but all players have them.

In technical terms - first touch, dribbling 1v1, killer passes, eye of the needles passes, dead ball kicks - he is one of the few players we currently have who is capable of turning a game with individual brilliance. He is often effective when he has the ball at his feet and receives with his body shape facing forwards.

In any era we've had few of these match turning players in any Socceroo team against quality opposition.

Agree with this.

Technically he's brilliant.. physically whilst not strong or fast does a serious amount of running. His game against Peru in the play off he put in a mountain of work.
It's tactically where he is poor, making poor decisions continuously. I think he's best played as a RW where he has time and space to pick out a pass or cross.

Interesting Algeria have stated they'll be hosting Palestine home game. If an evening game, it's the same as the UK which works out a bit better for Australia. Might this be a new world record in distance between two places for an international qualification window? Melbourne to Algiers. Got to be close.

Excellent video with an hour of footage for the 2010 qualifying campaign. Tonnes of interview snippets and extended highlights. Still lived in Australia then and my eyes feel heavy just seeing the Asian away games. Watched them all.

Interesting Algeria have stated they'll be hosting Palestine home game. If an evening game, it's the same as the UK which works out a bit better for Australia. It's getting close.
According to Mrs Google, going off distance only:
Melbourne to Algiers = 16,667.60 km
Melbourne to Glasgow (1986) = 16,975.60 km

@Decentric asked about Luongo in clubland. This video skips 2016-18. Although he played regularly and well, QPR's anti football was just not for his skill and style. The tie at Wednesday was good until injury.

Great career list of every single appearance. Out injured for the best part of 11 months Jan 22 to Dec 23.
