+x+x+x+x+xIMO the Dogs can do what the Chicago Bears did. Early season losses were young inexperienced players losing confidence, making mistakes failing to execute and finding ways to lose. At one stage most pundits would have backed them to lose from anywhere and unfortunately they didn't completely lose that talent. Youngest team in the comp but added a few experienced and quality players to lead the way. Most importantly they hung in backed each other and had great team spirit even in the tough times. Going through the tough times together increased their unity and resolve. Now young players are getting more confident and putting in better performances each week. The stuff the coaching team has been banging on about for 2 years has finally sunk in. Better execution has shown that what they were previously trying to do was the right thing. Dogs are similar, young, inexperienced and lacking confidence. If we followed the Bears play book we would add some experienced props and maybe a better half back. We have added experience and resilience, it doesn't matter much who is providing leadership and setting the standards. We will need unity, resolve, desire and execution for a quick turnaround. The age and level of experience of most of the team doesn't matter as long as there is good leadership. That's the formula for the Dolphins, not the Dogs. It is a formula for any side that is rebuilding.... The other parallel is that like Burto the QB Fields copped heaps of criticism. Fields has silenced his critics, I look forward to Burto doing that. Players need good players around them and a competitive team to perform to their true potential. I honestly think there 2 types of rugby league player.... A) the player that can only perform with good players around him B) the player that can shine on his own even with misfits around him Type B is usually less consistent than type A but it's the type you need during rebuild phase. Type A's are the ones you need when you have most positioned established and need to be a top 4 team. Burton might be a type A but we really need a bunch of type B's at the moment to become a top 8 team. Once we are entrenched into top 8 (2 or 3 seasons of it) we can go after Type A's. We need type C players, guys that can train with a hangover in their speedos on a cold day in winter while sledging 3 Parra players on a mobile phone and sink a few beers between reps..... One Dman is enough HD..... We don't need any more of these types!

Miami???… Too many type F players..... many of them ending in D. Nothing wrong with an F-type. Been wanting one for years....

Andrew John’s was the greatest of all time and in his last few years couldn’t avoid missing the finals r even getting the spoon because of the lack of talent in his team.
It’s a team sport. It’s important to have good players in every position. It’s also important toga e players that can allow other players to play better. It’s also important to have a coach and staff that can bring out the best in all their players.
I’ll agree that our coaching staff and players can do better. But no player in the game can carry a team to a level that the players around him aren’t capable of playing.

I don't disagree, but at the same time, we aren't a team of complete misfits. We had a sufficient amount of good calibre of players across the park. Andrew John's himself carried a Newcastle team to within a whisker of a finals series (and they would have caused chaos if they had made it that year). I'm not expecting any one player to carry the team. I'm merely pointing out that some players only shine if they are already part of a strong or winning team. Others might not be as consistent, but have x-factor or play in a way where they can shine even in amongst misfits. IMO, you need the x-factor types more when you are bottom placed team, as you need to give the fans hope for the team but also see if the rest of the squad players can play well and therefore worth keeping. I think it's doubly important in the spine positions.

I think it's doubly important in the spine positions. Taffee, Xeri, Foxy, Burto and Kicks are X-Factor players. As were Averillo and TPJ last season. Winning in team sport is mostly about the team, the team needs to be able to do everything well and consistently. Where a team falls down badly in one area that puts a lot of pressure on other parts of their game. When a team falls down badly in several areas it is usually curtains... Our problems last season where:- 1) losing the ruck, conceding yards and 6-agains 2) Not making yards and earning quick play the balls. 3) poor execution including last tackle options. 4) mistakes and lapses, bad reads, missed tackles dropped balls etc. The end result was the opposition winning the possession and field position battle. It wasn't all down to one player. Sometimes good efforts and good play from individuals resulted in nothing, some players preformed better than many think they did, most fans can't see beyond the scoreboard.

Contributing factors.. 1) Generally we lacked size and lost the forwards battle, 2) Too many players prone to making errors, missing tackles or making bad decisions- most have left the club. 3) Young inexperienced side lacking leadership and good decision making. 4) Too many injuries, players playing injured, team changes or young / inexperienced players playing too many games in a row.
When so much was wrong there is a lot that can be improved, the order of improvement doesn't matter.
The one positive was the team often looked fit and usually tried hard, team spirit was good considering the results.
The formula is the same everywhere, stick together in the bad times, try hard, work hard, look for leadership, weed out weak-links, improve everything that needs to be improved

On the subject of players playing well in weak teams.
I've watched a 40 min highlights video of Walter Payton, IMO best best sportman I have ever seen, 2nd place isn't even close.
The quote that sums it up is...
"The Bears are not a one man team, they are a one Superman team."
Even in America players like that only happen once in every 30-50 years. In over 50 years of watching NRL I have ever seen an NRL plsyer who was that good.
Make a clone combining the best elements of Big Mal, Steve Rodgers and Joey John's, that would be the NRL equalivent of Payton.

We definitely need to concentrate on improving the spine. From what Gus and others have said we are recruiting plenty of kids for these positions. Especially halves. And it looks like nobody experienced is available currently.
For X-factor I’m looking forward to seeing how Crichton plays for us. Taafe is another. Maybe those two could fill in those spine positions if we want a very offensive style.
Xerri I think will give us some real X-factor. He could be the best centre in the game by the end of the year.

Point 2 and 3 is most likely not as much of a problem now because of the experience we have signed. Curran, Mann, Crichton etc. and we can only hope injuries don’t happen again.

X-factors are the guys that do the unexpected at unexpected times. Guys like Josh Reynolds, Barba, Inu, Ponga, Walsh, Cody Walker, Latrell, Turbo, Munster etc are X-factors. Chrichton is more your solid consistent and elite player. Xerri would have been the same at Sharks before the ban. Jury out on whether he can even get close to that level. Might be like Burton and needs good players around him. Hoping we can improve collectively as I don't see any x-factor types in this team, which means they all need the person next to them to improve so they themselves can improve

I agree size in the forwards looks like our biggest problem. I am hoping that improvements in other areas improve our ability to hang in and our ability to complete sets. Hughes and Curran are my hopes for improvements in the middle. It only takes 1-2 players to make a difference. Matty Utai is an example of that sometimes a side doesn't need to make yards up the middle. Utai is the Dogs player that reminds me a bit of Payton. Utai only needs 1 bjg carry per set for 10 years and the ability to throw passes for try assits to close the gap. Utai was the missing link for that 2002 side. For 2024 we might have 1-2 holes to fill and some of the first choice 17 by the end of the season might surprise us. .KK is another forward with size and impact who I think is now in the top 30., he might end up at prop.

Burton might be a type A but we really need a bunch of type B's at the moment to become a top 8 team. Once we are entrenched into top 8 (2 or 3 seasons of it) we can go after Type A's. Love you mate but this is so stupid.
Agreed.
I actually don't consider any of those guys as x-factors. Maybe Taaffe.... Hoping we can improve collectively as I don't see any x-factor types in this team, which means they all need the person next to them to improve so they themselves can improve Taffee, perhaps Xeri, Chricthon, Burto, Foxy, Kicks... X-Factor just needs to be able to break the line or set up a line break against a well set defence. When they do expect it and still can't stop it is even better than unexpected... Don't confuse rocks and diamonds with X-Factor... the best players made an impact and don't make many mistakes... our team absolutely doesn't need more erratic players panicking, taking dumb options and putting the team under pressure. Chricton is very valuable because he nearly always makes great decisions, he backs that up with good execution and he is calm and composed. Foxy just needs to find is MoJo, best guy for turning a half chance into a try in the comp. Guys that can break or beat tackles running the ball can change the momentum in games, passing the ball can take opportunities, but it rarely makes opportunities... passing is executing to turn momentum into points and composure is a big requirement..

Burtos bombs are X factor stuff… we just need a few blokes chasing hard to clean up those scraps and take advantage…
I have no doubt we will see plenty more from Burto this year with a full pre-season, more familiar combos, and the defence having more than one player on which to direct their entire focus…

Even if it sounds like they are talking sense, assume it is nonsense.

I've actually returned to a bloodbath in my profession and a lockdown for a week would probably be a good thing to let me catch up! C'mon JN.1, do your thing! Plus I miss my daily 11am fix of watching ugly health officers give me stats on hospitalisations and re-iterating to arabs (ahem I meant) people that they should only be outside if they are exercising, buying groceries for old ladies, or buying drugs.
