+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xMillions spent on a superstar foreign coach is money not spent on grassroots trying to produce players like son Well said. And Arnie was considered top coach at the WC. Which, frankly, was nonsense, and we all know it because a year later he lost a football game to a better team than ours No, because it is nonsense that Graeme Arnold was the best coach at the WC. I mean, think about that statement for a minute. Allow it to 60 seconds of the consideration. 'Graeme Arnold was the best of all the coaches at the WC in 2022.' And then tell me if you think that is a true and accurate statement. tsf might be harsh to some saying we done nothing But the Uruguay 06 quali win was of huge signifigance, probably the biggest imo and the games leading on in the WC. That Azzuri game was of epic proportions if it not for the Grosso pen for winning that would have been so epic against one of the best NT's those eras. not saying we have done nothing, I love the team and have been proud many times - but there has not been much for the ages. We never look like beating a really good side I feel. Other nations around our level have achieved this, look I pretty much agree with your posts tsf and RIMB's last one. We're ALL proud Aussies/Roo supporters and our background is admiring "having a go" so to speak, win lose or draw. All this analysis paralysis that is todays game and I applaud it, intel is brilliant BUT thats how we are playing due to our lack of "outlier" or game changer type of players we are yearning for for so long is it ?. Its a game of hold stations and I question, is that our strength every single time we go out to play. We are sitting back in fear of losing and then we don't have the arsenal to strike when that opportunity comes. Are we lacking converting chances because our players mind set is held back ? who goes against the grain I ask when watching the games ? Is it we lack conviction because we're so programmed in holding possession keeping the bad wolf away. We all have been impressed by the so called minnows in this asian cup, they may lack shape defensively but damn some of their gay abandon attaxcking was like, why can't we look like this many times surely our blokes can play, let them off the leash ! yeah sweet, I guess al I am really getting at is our problems are much more deep-seated than Arnold's poor selection and tactics during this tournament double points for getting gay abandon in your post too

+xFor my 2 cents 1988 4-1 against the Argies and the 3-1 against Mexico in Confed were pretty earth shattering. Other matches, for results wise, as LFC mentions the Uruguay 05 qualification (as well as the Iran 1997 away match in front of 130 thousand angry, spitting Persians and to jag a 1-1 was pretty chuffed at the time, forget that miserable MCG return :( Recently the Denmark game last year was great but nothing else really "stands out" sadly. Maybe Japan in 2006? Just want to say I was at the Argie match when we pined them 4-1. What a night. Also was at the 97 MCG match. What a disaster.

Rarely raised, wasn't the Iran first goal offside? You watch it again and again and even pre VAR recent history surely would've seen an assistant referee immediately put the flag up.

I did watch it a couple of years ago. Reminded me of postecoglu's roos v thailand, or our game against sk. Missed some sitters and got our hearts broken. In the end football's ability to break your heart or bring joy is why we love the game. Hope TSF gets some more joy

p.s. if we had var we probably beat iran, that's true, but we probably lost to uruguay since they had a clear pen and red card in the 2 fixtures.
Reckon the game was more fun before var

Kewell yellow card when their keeper jumped up and raked his studs down Kewell's leg then flopped. Iran player came back into the field of play from behind the goal line (offside) for their goal. Should have thrown the d*ckhead Hore into the crowd rather than out of the ground. He would have learned. You didn't miss anything.

I do have a different outlook on how Australia are doing overall than a lot of you, but think that's due to my age.
I wasn't even born when the Iran game happened. The 2006 world cup is what introduced me to soccer but I didn't truly fall in love with the game and the Socceroos till quite late. I had been to Socceroos games before but I never truly followed the team till the start of 2014 world cup qualifying. The Brisbane V Central Coast Grand Final was the game that fully got me into the game.
But idk guys. Before 2006 we're a nation who's only ever made it to the world cup once.
Now in the last 18 years. We've made the World Cup five times. We've made the knock out rounds two times out of five. We've made two asian cup finals. Getting the trophy in 2015.
While we aren't over course any where near top nations. I do think some of y'all have lost some perspective. How rare it is for a nation to regularly make the world cup and also make it to knocks out multiple times. Let alone win an international trophy.
Like bruh imagine South Koreans. Last generation who remember seeing them win the Asian cup would be in their damn 70s lmao.
Japan have a golden generation and all the talent in the world but haven't won the Asian cup since 2011, 13 years ago. Will get another shot to win just under 20 years since then. See how they go.
Nations like Scotland who are football mad but never ever in their history making the knockouts.
Know it can be exhausting watching the Socceroos and man I can't imagine watching them since the 70s, 80s, 90,
But damn y'all some optimism and pride on what we've achieved. Out of all countries in the world, we've achieved more than the vast vast majority of nations.

Well said We dont have a single player in the big 5 yet we have done really well of late Id like us to improve in other areas of oz football, but getting the most out of the cattle we have for the roos is one area we are doing exceptionally well in If we become a nation that trashes coaches that take a team of 2nd division players past the 5th place conmenbol team, the r16, has some great friendlies and comes to within a whisker of getting to the semis in the asian cup what foriegn coach will want to take us up? We will get another holger if we dont have some perspective

Actually last time we trashed a coach that did well was pim and rhats when we got a holger, sure there might have been some shananigans about our world cup bid involved, but who in their right mind would want to coach us?

What is Arnie being so defensive when the heats get on? Its fine to answer the critics who question you tactics and personnel but to have a go at fans for having their say is disappointing to say at least.
He also says he has two eyes on the World Cup and 1 on the Asian Cup just sends mixed messages too.
