The two diminutive midfielders the Socceroos need - FTBL | The home of football in Australia

I think they could certainly play in the same team. Nisbet's an 8 or a 10 whereas Arzani is a winger. They would wreak havoc together against a low block - speed of thought and foot, vision, intelligence - off the scale.

Just need some bigger blokes around them but a front five of Robertson, Nisbet, Arzani, Yengi, McGree would do some damage. Especially when you have the likes of Irankunda, Silvera, Goodwin, Irvine to throw in to help.

Does Arnie have the cojones to pick them both?

Dont know mate the Lebanese have some pretty big lads in the back..... whipping balls in from speedy mosquito fleet wingers to ...... umm Duke or Yengi? wont work I reckon.

Who said anything about whipping in crosses?

Arzani is #1 in the A League for beating a man and Nizzy is #1 for winning the ball, holding it in tight spaces and slipping passes through the channels. We'd be playing on the ground so if they've got big blokes at the back... all the better.

I remember being in the stands at the WC in Brazil watching Australia v Spain in Curitiba. Oar got an absolute physical mauling from the Spanish defenders. I remember thinking geez you need to be good to compete at that size vs the very best. Probably not such a big deal vs Lebanon. I like Arzani a lot and Nisbet too but worry how they'd go when the opponent has world class quality.

Oar just wasn't that good a player - certainly not at World Cup level.

As impressive as that sounds whether the crosses come in low, high or through the channels you still have to reach the same target man to reach the back of the net...

Maybe Jordi Alba was a little on the petite side that day but Ramos is 6 foot and Albiol 6 foot 3 inches ... not exactly short mate.

Only way to find out is to pick them.Nisbet particularly is immensely strong and not easily shifted off the ball and Arzani is able to change direction with his quick feet so they should be able to stand up to Lebanon's defenders. Both of them are streets ahead of Oar in technique and football nous.

Nope. You need a target man (or two) who know how to run onto their delivery. Duke is not fit for purpose but Yengi might be. Mo Toure would be. Even McGree as a false nine would be.

It's a shame about Jason Cummings - he'd run riot feeding off Nizz and Arzani but... he took the short term money.

You definitely need a few tall players in your team but short players with a small turning circle and tight control can wreck havoc

To provide some context I noticed recently that Bayern Munich signed a winger from the last transfer window and he’s only 1.64cm tall.
He’s called Bryan Zaragoza who is a recent Spanish international too.

If it’s good enough for Bayern to sign a player that short then it’s there is hope for someone like Nisbet’s ability to get a move over to Europe.

Oar just wasn't that good a player - certainly not at World Cup level.

Oar was at FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie in 2014. He had 100 appearances for them in 4+ years there. He was playing regularly at a good level but was completely outclassed physically against Spain.

I don't think a players height is everything but you need to be really good and very strong in the body to compete at the highest level at that height.

I'm not so worried about how they'd go against Lebanon. I'm also not saying they shouldn't be given an opportunity. Arzani in particular I reckon adds qualities and a point of difference that we need. I just wonder how they would go against a world class team, which if we get to pointy end of qualification or make the World Cup, is who we will play.

I understand your point but if they don't get games under their belt in WC qualifying games they won't have enough international experience when they come up against top class teams.I believe  it takes between 10 to 20 games for players to be fully integrated into a national team.Even though some of the Asian teams we play are not world class they are well organised defensively and certainly when they play us here will no doubt  play those dreaded low block defences we have have great trouble penetrating. The two players we are talking about have the creativity( on their A-League performances) which our team needs desperately.

We could also do with the likes of a Josh Kennedy - a big target man as central striker, who is a decent finisher to punish defences from quality attacking interplay.

Wow havent heard that name for a while... he was seriously a weapon for us later in games against asian opposition. We need to find another... I think Mo Toure should be given a run.

The closest to Kennedy physically that I can think of is Tete Yengi. Not sure about his technical ability but, tbf, he has started pretty well for Livingston.

We're talking height not class.

Mind you... Nizz continues to be overlooked and underestimated. Super classy player by Australian standards and I'm prepared to say he's the only one we've got capable of stepping into the Mooy boots.

With the exception of scoring goals and let's not forget Mooy was a late bloomer. If Nizz finds his shooting boots he might go to an outrageous new level.

The discussion was about both height and class. No ones saying you can't be a great footballer just because of your height. If you're shorter you are going to need more talent though.

I'm on-board with Arzani as a bench weapon. I need to watch more of Nisbet. From what I've seen I like his technique and passing. I just worry he'll be moved off the ball too easily at a higher international level. It's been good reading peoples opinions of him to get perspective. I think we're very stacked in midfield we're just not selecting the right players.

For what it's worth. If we could throw Rowles in so cold against Peru and he did very well alongside Wright then I don't think Nisbet or others would look out of place at all. A lot of these players come in and breathe new life into the squad. We have to use these players.
