When we have a bigger pack of forwards, we can play with smaller halves and Burton's kicking game will not be so critical.
I see gradual improvement in the forwards, climbing a rung every 6 months unless we sign a really good prop.
The type of player we need is in high demand and will be hard to get.
Regardless by 2026 we might have a top 4 pack of forwards.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xThis is my latest thought on team changes. Salmon - second row in reserve grade, try to develop hole running. Mann - starting lock in NRL Hutch - plays half for first 30 mins then moves to lock when Mann has a spell Sexton on BBO- halfback but come on after 30 mins. The idea is that the halfback is a running halfback who simply plays what they see. The hooker and lock organise the side, with the lock playing first receiver and some fast 2 pass shifts to the halves on the edges. It is like playing with 2 5/8ths. Faster ball movement by us means the opposition big boys need to move faster and use up more juice, If the half goes well, Hutch can simply play off the bench where he covers a lot of positions. Salmon has more energy hits harder and runs harder, but we are trading that for more speed, skill and smarts. I appreciate thinking outside the square… but I cannot support changing halves during the game as a plan… Other teams have done it . , I’ve given it no thought.. can u name one of the teams that did it with a modicum of success???… I think Walker at the Roosters was one. Typically it is done to ease a young half into NRL. That reply was Mocklike in its vagary… We don’t need to ease 7exy in… we just need to back him in… or we back Hutch until we can’t… CC saw what Sexton could do last season, yet we signed Hutch and he started the first 2 weeks, I think needing more size and solid defence in the halves is a consideration . Reserve grade isn't winning impressively each week. I think something in our attack needs tweaking but the problem is Salmon and short passing, playing a Penrith like style. Or losing the ruck and getting slow play the balls. Last game Burton ran the ball more that unlocked Kicks and the team looked better. The team also looks good with Hutch and Taaffe linking up on the right side. My main reservation about Hutch is a lack of speed running the ball. I agree D is likely the main factor… I’ve ssid it myself… I don’t think the benefit of hutch’s D and support play outweighs a lack of creativity and an average kicking game… but gotta trust the coach I guess… The answer to my question to nominate sides that have had a modicum of success with their plan being shift the 7 to 13 triggered by ‘mocklike’ accusation… I need more than ‘I think Walker’ to get me across the line on the idea of a 7 on the bench as an ongoing plan… i think shifting a 7 to 13 and having a 7 on the bench would create more issues than it solves… for the hooker, edges and 13… a 7 on the bench certainly didn’t help the Tigers this week… and possibly played on Sullivans mind throughout the game.. The left side was much better last week…and it should have been… another week of combos and we had more ball and momentum than last week.. should improve further as the weeks progress and with Fox back if we can get an even share of possession and field position… Hutch is a good player in attack and defence, in fact one of our best players most games and very consistent. He simply lacks the pace to take opportunities particularly late in games, he could easily play second row, lock, centre, 5/8 and half. Any rotation of players depends on players suit the role, it helping the players to perform and improving the team. IMO there is no way Hutch will be dropped to reserve grade anytime spoon. Sexton will need some "Thurston like" performances in reserve grade and even then Hutch would be in contention for a bench spot. Playing reserve grade is a chance for a good half to hone their game, learn to dominate and build the confidence to be the dominant player on the field. IMO this is the other reason why Sexton is in reserve grade. We don't just want a few flashy plays we want to see 80 mins of dominant organising football with minimal errors and better defence. I think Sexton is getting encouragement, but he needs to earn it. I think he eventually will but it will take a few months. My funky suggestion was a way of fast tracking a change that I otherwise don't expect before June. I also think that it will take until around June for our pack to close a lot of the gap to other packs, we can still win some games in the interim. Whether or not the June timeline turns out to be optimistic or pessimistic, time will tell. Im 100% in agreement with you on Hutch but its not surprising or unsuspecting for me. I knew he'd be one of our better signings, in fact he'll be even better once he gets to play 6 with Kikau, Crighton and JAC outside him and a sweeping Taaffe. The unfortunate aspect for Sexton is that he deserves to be the NRL half, its just that CC is not ready to move Burton in favour of Hutch at 6. If we lose too many games because we arent scoring 4 or 5 tries, CC might make the change. But for the time being, it seems we are focussed on defending well and keeping opposition to less than 2 or 3 tries and hooe our attack does enough to score more. I personally am not a fan. I always feel that a developing team should be aiming to score no less than 4 tries a game (5 really) and fix their defence as the season goes, but right now, id take any win. #burtonderangementsyndrome

If any young half can be thrown into NRL on a sink or swim basis he is that dude. However, if he sinks, that is back to square 1. Comparing Jimmy Maloney, Adam Reynolds, Townsend etc, we can see how those guys are good mentors who can take a lot of pressure off a young half. Burto is definitely our 6 for this season and probably next season. But I am not sure if he will develop into the right guy to mentor O'Neil. Anyway there is plenty to work on this season, who knows how we will be travelling in 2 years time. Overall I can see progress in attack and defence this season and plenty more opportunities for improvement. Burton's last game was probably his best effort for at least 6 months and there is a lot more improvement in him. It is far too early to say how good Burto can be and that applies to many of our young players. Out of the team, Kicks, King, Sutton, Hutch, Mann, Salmon and Fox are around their peak, many others are still young and improving.

How can you not like what Burton brings to the field?
Take away his kicking game altogether and you have a bloke taking in the line and threatening with quality ball on his outside shoulder now with kik and (C) as an option that gateway will start to open up with combinations beginning to gel
I'm a huge Curran fan too btw

+xNow.. Let's recall what it was like not to have a kicker in the side.. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 It is crucial to have a good kicker when the forwards are being smashed. And Curran is a gun. Critter, Mann, Hutch, Curran all top signings, early days for Taaffe but I am seeing glimpses of potential.

For young halfbacks something similar happens in the NFL.
The bottom teams get the early draft picks, the top rated players are quarterbacks the majority of which crash in their first season of NFL and that is their career over before it started.
The QB will look completely different playing in a weak team.
In a weak team the natural instinct is to scramble out of the pocket and make plays which can be successful and entertaining from a fan point of view, but are not what coaches want to see.
Playing in a weak side the guy gets labelled as a bad player, and / or regularly smashed and busted up.
Not all of them, but most don't make it. Fans and management often think throwing a different young guy into the fire next season will yield different results.
When the core of the team is there, the right young guy can be an instant success, and they are the examples people remember.

The side doesn’t need changes. It just needs a weaker opponent. We get that this week. My money is on us giving the Titans a touch up.

Burton is our best half. Sexton and Hutch aren’t setting up any more try’s than Burto. It’s just such a poor argument with our options.

I am only expecting Fox to come back in for Tracey this week.
Reserve grade has had 2 losses and I doubt that any player has impressed.
In spite of losing 2 games the NRL side has been playing well.
Salmon is the only guy I would think about replacing.
Should we lose to the Tits any players who have poor games will be on thin ice...
Anyway it is Teamlist Tuesday- we will find out soon.

+xThe side doesn’t need changes. It just needs a weaker opponent. We get that this week. My money is on us giving the Titans a touch up. Agree for this week. We've shown good defensive resolve, although the weight of posession against us has inevitably resulted in too many points conceded. This a game where our current lineup can hopefully keep the opposition to fewer points tyan we can score. If we fail here, i think there is no choice but to make some changes.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xThis is my latest thought on team changes. I think this is borderline trolling now Marki.
Burton is our best half. Sexton and Hutch aren’t setting up any more try’s than Burto. It’s just such a poor argument with our options. How is it trolling? The murmurs about whether Burton should move to centres are getting louder and louder. Theres only so much support and faith the coach can have until even he sees the writing on the wall. I think as long as Burton is in the team, we can still make use of his last tackle kicks. Even NSW did it (with success) afew years back. I don't think we lose anything with him moved. In fact i reckon we gain. You are suggesting we weaken our halves to strengthen our outside backs? No. You think moving Burton out of the halves is weakening the halves.. i think having Hutch at 6 and Sexton at 7 strengthens the halves but also improves many players including our second rowers. With Burton to centre, we dont lose anything.

I don't think that the number Burto wears matters that much. He is never going to be a Cliff Lyons style 5/8, neither is Hutch. With Kicks on the outside it isn't a hard job.
hutch 13 + Burto 6 = Hutch 6 + Burto in both cases Taaffe at 1 makes sense.
If we wanted to play Sexton there are ways of doing that.

If we are going to move players around the best would be to move Critta to fullback brining Xeri into the centres. And putting Taafe or Sexton to halfback for Hutch.
But making changes now would disrupt the combinations that have been built so far. And let’s be honest. It is irrelevant the changes we make because the team isn’t good enough yet. It is highly unlikely the results would have been better so far with a different combination of players we have on our books. If anything they would have been worse.

Marki. What makes you think Hutch or Sexton will improve our team in the halves? Burton has more try assists than Hutch or Sexton in every year he has played in the halves. He has more kick meters. More run meters etc. However when Burton played in the centres for Penrith he had virtually no try assists. Or kick meters. Only running meters.
So I think that proves Burton is much more important to our team playing in the halves.
I understand you keep hearing off the media that Burto should move to the centres. But have you looked at the facts? Please argue your point. But give us some valid reasons. Preferably statistical.

The proof is in the pudding Micko.... Kikau is very ineffective with Burton inside him. He needs a clever ball playing half inside him to decide when it is right for him to reveive the ball or when he should be a decoy eith the ball going to Burton. Burton had 16 tries in 2021 playing in the centres because of this. Not sure why he isn't credited eith mamy try assists to his winger -maybe cutting out Kikau was enough to secure the run to the line. Either way, my point is that Hutch and Sexxy are both better ball players than Burton are and probably will ever be. To improve Kikau's presence and unlock the left side attack, it is vital that a better ball player us plsying left of the ruck. This is why im calling for the move. Has nothing to do with media. I spotted his limitations as a ball player the first year he was with us. Nothing has changed.

Mann, Salmon and Curran are much better locks than Hutchinson Hutch and Mann are a lot better at passing the ball, both can play first receiver. Hutch can put an edge forward into a gap. He is a good defender and a high workrate player. IMO Hutch and Mann are a throw back to an earlier era of smart skilful locks like Travis Norton, the modern trend is to play with 3 large middles for that style Curran is the only option. Salmon has high workrate, but he isn't big or explosive, he doesn't have great footwork, he is not a smart or skilful player and he can't kick the ball. If we are looking to win the game with defence then keep Salmon at 13, Hutch at 7 and Burto at 6. If we want to improve the attack we can't play the Panthers style with Salmon in the Yeo role. IMO a team looking to climb the ladder can't simply copy what the other teams are doing, they need to find a unique edge which suits their squad.

Game 1 - Burton not involved as a result Kiks not involved. Game 2 - Burton a lot better and that unlocked Kiks. Burto needs to get even more involved than game 2. Kiks doesn’t really need a half that can put him into a gap, just give him early ball. Game 1 Hutch deifted over to the left and threw a great ball to Kiks, we also need more of that. I think that pass is why you think Hutch is a better 5/8 than Burto. Out of all of our players Hutch is the most likely to throw that kind of pass. However plenty of successful 5/8s were mainly running players, Burto is that style. hutch doesn't represent the same threat running the ball.

Since us fans can't all agree, I am happy to let the coach decide.
Some things are splitting hairs a really good prop would make more difference.
Until our forwards can match it, I wonder how good we can be.
I'll enjoy the wins when we get them.

+x+x+xMarki.
Kikau hardly played last season and we lost the forwards battle badly. Don’t let the truth get in way of a good #BDS bashing…

Jerome Hughes would have been better falling over than making a tackle… Another can of worms opened by the NRLol judiciary…
