Nope, 10 Play streaming only. Can't let some pesky football get in the way of NCIS.

Forgot it was on and only saw the last 10/15 minutes :(

By that stage Mariners were just booting the ball long to try and hold out for a 0-1 win and giving their opponents as many chances as they wanted to come at them - foiled in time added by an excellent strike off a looping cut back ball to make the scores level.

Frustrating to see another game decided in time added when the winning team just gives up possession with very low quality clearances and miss hits. Abdish-ATA looked fast and skilful and 65% possession by them suggests it was a heavy battle for Mariners.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Nah, no away goals any more unfortunately.

I hate that competitions have removed away goals

Brutal schedule just got worse. Flight home via Dubai cancelled which would have had them in Sydney Friday 6:30am.

Looks like
5.55am From Bishek to Istanbul 6hr 5 min - 9:00am in Turkey
7 hour 25 min layover
4.25pm from Istanbul to Bangkok 9hr 40 min - 6:05am Friday in Thailand
2 hr 25 min layover
8:30am from Bangkok to Sydney 9 hr 8:30pm - Friday Sydney
Game 3pm Sunday. Absolutely monstrous schedule.
So they have lost 14 hours of rest and recovery for the Adelaide game.

They should reschedule the weekends game to another date then, a bit rich from the Nix fans celebrating about it when New Zealand is not part of the AFC.

I guess if you want to compete in the AFC expect the travel and cost factor to be problem, it makes it more problematic with how APL run the league.

For example having a salary cap when most leagues in the AFC don’t have one when Aussie clubs have small squads to work with.

AFC provide US$40k (AU$62k) per game as a travel subsidy.
Winner receives US$1.5m (AU$2.33m).
Runner up receives US$750k (AU$1.16m).
Third receives US$100k (AU$155k)

To be fair, CCM only had to play Perth,  WU, Roar and Adelaide twice last season and Newcastle, Sydney and Mcarthur 3 times.... so not as much travel?

The problem is the travel through the AFC is a lot more challenging and costly so if the APL and FA want the clubs to take the continental competitions seriously they need to help them with scheduling of games it’s part of the reality in Asia otherwise what’s the point of being in the AFC in the first place?

need to win it to make it worthwhile

Yeah it's the same subsidy value they use for the ACL and the A-League clubs have repeatedly said the out-of-pocket expenses are way higher than what the subsidy covers. From memory I think it only barely covers airfares for players and core coaching staff and that's about it. Club still has to cover accommodation as well as airfares for any other staff that are required. I remember Danny McBreen (i think it was), spoke about the first time CCM qualified for the ACL. Himself and a few others approached the club about the players getting a percentage cut of the money. They were then shown all the negative figures in a spreadsheet and essentially laughed out of the room.

I doubt it, I don’t think the prestige of an A league club winning an AFC tournament is of any value to APL.

On the other hand FA would undoubtedly like and benefit from that feather in the cap for Australian football but I don’t think they have a say in A league scheduling.

I think it’s only the pride of the Mariners club itself that is driving them on.
I don’t think FFA made much use out of the Wanderers winning the Asian Champions League.

If that scenario is the case then it shows how much they respect Asia, otherwise what’s the point of being in the AFC.

But I feel some of the clubs like the mariners want to take it seriously because it helps builds there prestige and brand in Asia and therefore the commercial opportunities within it.

The point of football is to be the best and to win trophies if afc/FFA/apl etc aren't helping the clubs then it's on them

I agree with you there, the Mariners now have very forward thinking management who CAN see commercial opportunities that this would open up, unlike the majority of Australian football clubs ( management and fans alike) who only see prestige in a grand final win.

I agree... Sadly I dont see that ambition though... And in fairness to Australian clubs its hard to build a brand in Asia when its next to impossible to compete with the Euro mega clubs pushing their image down everyone's throats. Its hard enough to do it in Australia let alone in a foreign country..

Mariners can win silverware and arrange a tour of off season friendlies in Asia but they wont get many coming out to see them play or sell any merch..... not unless its against a Euro club or Messi or Ronaldo no matter who they are pretending to play for these days.

Small steps though, you don’t get anything if you give up at the first hurdle.
Getting the brand known is the first step and then take it from there.
