We got rid of the nyl as a cost cutting measure and there has been a push to bring them back. Im guessing it would cost the league around 300k per clun to have an nyl. It keeps getting pushed back but youth sides play in the npl

In our short experience with and without a nyl its not obvious to me a nyl would help at all?

Is there evidence they are useful at improving player development

Given that injured overage players can't come back via the NPL I think it would be worth it. Maybe  a reserve league might be a better terminology with a limit on overage players

In the NPL off season there is more value for these players to go overseas and play youth clubs across europe like Melbourne City have been doing than play in a youth league.

In a perfect world - given the geographical limits of this country - I don't see the need for a NYL once all the seasons across the pyramids are aligned.

I can see merit in one now though, whilst the A-League (as structually our highest league) is run out of sequence of the rest of the country.

no need for a NYL, just play them through the ongoing Age groups as in the past.
The promising ones get blooded in playing up older Age group or Snrs, other not.
The cream always bubbles to the top and they get rewarded or in the end don't cut it.

Better for our talented kids to play grown men in the NPL than play each other every week.

I get the benefits of playing best v best at youth level but overall they better off playing against men.

See the struggles of Sydney fc and CCM who look like they will be relegated into NPL2 next season but it will make them into better players over time as it will likely toughen them up by starting again at a lower division.

No point putting the youth on a pedestal if they don’t know how to deal with the consequences especially when they get into senior football where results are paramount.

Thought: if the nyl was u19 or 18 would that be better? It could help players who are not quite ready for npl as well as give players a league minutes before they turn 18 which is crucial
