The Joeys and Young Socceroos have been drawn into their respective groups for the 2024 ASEAN Boys Championship U16's and U19's tournaments.

U16 Joeys Group
Australia
Malaysia
Thailand
Timor-Leste

U19 Young Socceroos Group
Australia
Laos
Myanmar
Vietnam

We should win both tournaments comfortably. Will be interesting to see the squads for each tournament. I believe we will bring a close to full-strength Joeys squad, but a lower-tier Young Socceroos squad.

I think the Joeys specifically should be far better than everyone else relatively at U16 level and should torch everyone in that tournament. I guess you never know though.

One never knows in any tournament.

The Olyroos were unable to convert goals from about 3-4 times as many scoring opportunities as their opponents in Qatar a month or two ago.

Yeah but at U16 level relatively we should be much stronger. U23 becomes a grey area as well as the senior team but the gap is pretty big the younger you get, especially just based off of physical prowess against other ASEAN u16 nations. Not to mention, the best team at this tournament besides us is Indonesia.

Young Socceroos (U20) drew 3-3 against Uruguay in Montevideo... We're up 3-0, then conceded a 95th min penalty for Uruguay to equalise and Uruguay won the post-match penalty shootout.

Caputo with two goals and Badolato with one.

All without Hall, Lino, Bonetig, Skoko, Younis, Toure and Irankunda.

here is bodalato's goals

all three goals through the middle rather than overrelying on wings
https://x.com/scout_aussie/status/1798624633991942526

add top wingers like irankunda and to a lesser degree bennie and you have a lot of paths to goals

Highlights. Went 3 zip up by 32 minutes

All three goals from passes from zone 14 and 2 of them worked through from the backline

In 20 years of watching the socceroos i dont remember a single assist from zone 14 that wasnt either a fast break or a layup from a long range shot?

That sounds like an exaggeration....but i think that is accurate?

It’s refreshing to see an Australian team play through the middle effectively, some nice goals in that clip.

The problem with most of our teams at international level is their inability to break down defences, so it’s something it needs to be worked on for future improvement.

I noticed the lack of wingers in this team but playing through the middle is not mutually exclusive to having wingers or not.

serious question, have the seniors ever scored through a killer pass in zone 14 in the last 20 years (but not during a fast break)?

Maybe when Ange was our coach? We also had Rogic, Luongo and Mooy in the team which would have helped.

But the maybe the types of coaches we have are a problem, Morgan is a good coach and he has a proven record too.

Joeys squad for the Indonesian tournament was released earlier today.

https://www.socceroos.com.au/news/subway-joeys-squad-asean-u-16-boys-championship-confirmed

Interesting squad with a few new faces who didn't appear in the last camp. Good to build depth. A very Australian based squad.

Draw merchants haha.

This group of U20's have drawn their last 5 games against France, Netherlands, Denmark, Uruguay and Chile. All going to penalty shootout's with a (3-2) record.
All good preparation for the U20 Asian Cup next year and the qualifiers later this year. Clearly a very talented team.

results don't matter til u23 i think. But the type of goals matter and that's been consistently impressive!

They matter for this U20 cycle. We need to make the U20 World Cup, which is the most important youth tournament easily. Performing well or winning the U20 Asian Cup is also something this team is proving that they can do. Definitely the best run of results we've had against top teams for a youth team cycle, though this team has not played an Asian opponent yet but definitely at full-strength this team can do a lot in Asia and hopefully in the World.

it would indeed be better to make more youth tournaments

at least at u17 we now have an easier path

U20 is just simply a massive tournament.

The players coming through seem to be improving, the coaching staff not so much. There seem to be no ramifications for poor performances at the most important qualifying tournaments. That puts a lid on my excitement - we seem to now be worse than the sum of our parts.

The playing talent has improved, the coaching talent not so much.

The problem is however as much we are trying to improve we can’t underestimate how much Asian football has improved.

The last two senior World Cup qualifying campaigns and our inability to qualify for youth world cups and Olympics shows it’s a lot harder confederation than it’s ever been since we joined back in 2006.

Absolutely agree with comments about the coaching. It has long seemed to be failed A-league coaches with no consequences for poor results. Not entirely sure what the answer is or what other coaches are out there, but I’d like to see someone other than the Vidmar’s.

I don't necessarily agreed with the coaching comments.

I think Brad Maloney is a little sub standard at the moment but Trevor Morgan is fantastic. His u17 group were the ones to qualify for the world cup and the way his u19 now u20s have played is super impressive and I don't think it's just down to the generation cause the last u17 crop also had a very good squad but didn't play or perform as well.

trevor morgan I agree with. We probably can't afford a world beater, just someone who has club experience and has some runs on the board. He also finished u23s

Sainsbury to mooy in the Asian Cup final. The touch and turn from Luongo is thing of beauty. Rarely see goals from Australians like that.
