Quite a strike from denmark

Denmark look technically stronger, much more willing to turn with their first touch, much more willing to pass into traffic in zone 14

They have taken a fraction too long taking their shots though, need to shoot without a backlift

England seem allergic to trying to do anything technically difficult. Commentators really frustrated thought they sat too deep and didnt put enough energy into the press

It's true Southgate kept getting England to tournament heights but it was clear the manner might come back to bite them. Typically they'll do very well the next 2 games.

We put up a very strong defensive game against imo one of the likely finalists.
Spaletti has Italy playing to great shape and composure I’m impressed.
Italy are rebuilding whereas Spain a year or so ahead.
They need to finish more but their possession game is damn impressive, young Pedri is a top player already and Williams and Jamal are stars to the future.

Did well to keep Spain out to only the one own-goal. Spain were on top of us through most of the match.

But yes, I think that is down to Spaletti coaching in a good defensive shape, the only thing they lack at the moment is a real out-and-out striker (And it tells from that late missed chance, where there was a cross with two open players in the box and they both just couldn't get to it.)

I'm calling it now, Slovenia will beat England. They are a quality team, move the ball well.

Danes just pressed England so well... they just gave everyone the recipe to destroy them with an organised press. God I wish we got the chance to play this england team we would have a good chance.

If the danes can beat the serbs then england could finish 3rd and play germany and be knocked out as I expected lol

Watching England feels like when watching the Socceroos play, except they have genuine world class quality players to work but the similarities with us is pragmatic tacticians who lack the ability to control their opponents with the ball and rely heavily on counter attacks to get results.

I dont see England winning the euros or get close to it unless they get better at controlling games, I feel like they lack a top class No.6 or 8 similar to the likes of Rodri and Fabian Ruiz excellent technicians who are great at controlling the tempo and rhythm of the game.
TAA is not a No.6/8 and Rice is a box to box player but cant control a tempo because he has the likes of Odegaard and Jorginho in the team who do it for him at Arsenal.

I would like to see either Bellingham play deeper or try young Kobbie Mainoo who is that kind of player in a sense but lacks experience but this is Southgate we are talking about here, Mr Progmatic himself.

Spain were excellent and I fancy their chances with that world class midfield and dangerous front three especially their wingers who are hard to stop. I still have issues in where will their goals will come from plus their defence but so far so good for Spain, Italy were disappointing and lacked ambition today but they will be ok.

I missed Serbia vs Slovenia, it must be a balkan thing to have close ending to games.

Barca, I agree on your comments re the 3Lions, correct its Southgate more than the players.
He needs to let them loose a little and more so his selections.
Christ TAA is no 6 at all, he has potential in developing possibly into one through a Club season but not throwing him in the wolves without much experience there let alone bang in the Euros.
Your right about Bellingham sitting deeper OR I'd even try him at 6 - he has the guile to adjust his game to suit.
Can press him higher when the time is right.
Again Southgate selections, most of his midfield are box to box with attacking nouse, there is no genuine sit back in the hole 6.
Gallagher works but he always plays high for Chelsea, your Rice comments are spot on.
Mainoo as young as he is has shown for United some good defending in the middle of the park and distribution, another worthwhile gamble but now I think its too late to try some unknowns by Southgates thinking.

Mate your wrong about Italy, they are lucky to make it let alone have many players who have played together much compared to Spain.
Barring the few Snr players they are rebuilding and I think they played the perfect holding game considering who they played and similar to many games the past week hitting better teams on the counter, they lack a striker and 2 and a stronger 6.
Got GK covered no worries there, Donna is world class.
Lets not forget under all that pressure its a OG, kudos to them imo.

Anyways - here's my favourite bit: Permutations!

For now, as there are only 3 groups with 2 games played, I'm not going to worry completely about which third placed teams progress. I will essentially break the 3 groups down into "Will Progress" (Top 2), "May Progress" (Third), "Can't Progress" (Fourth).

GROUP A
  • Germany
    • Will progress if: Germany have already progressed to the knockouts. A win or a draw against Switzerland will see them qualify as group winners. A loss will see them qualify in second.
  • Switzerland
    •  Will progress if: Switzerland is almost guaranteed a top two finish. A win against Germany will see them qualify as group winners, and a draw will see them qualify in second - regardless of the result in Scotland v Hungary.
    • May progress if: The only way Switzerland will finish third in the group, is if:
      • Switzerland loses to Germany AND Scotland defeats Hungary, AND Scotland wins by 6 goals or more.
  • Scotland
    • Will progress if: Scotland can only finish in second place if:
      • Switzerland loses to Germany AND Scotland defeats Hungary, AND Scotland wins by 6 goals or more.
    • May progress if: If Switzerland fail to defeat Germany, Scotland will finish third in the group unless they lose to Hungary.
    • Can't progress if: Scotland will fail to reach the knockouts if they lose to Hungary.
  • Hungary
    • Will progress if: Hungary cannot qualify directly by finishing first or second
    • May progress if: Hungary can qualify in third if they defeat Scotland
    • Cannot progress if: They fail to defeat Scotland.
GROUP B
  • Spain
    • Will progress if: Spain has already qualified as winners of the group.
  • Italy
    • Will progress if: Italy will qualify in second place if they defeat or draw with Croatia
    • May progress if: Italy will finish third in the group if they are defeated by Croatia
    • Cannot progress if: Italy will finish fourth in the group if they are defeated by Croatia AND Albania defeats Spain
  • Albania
    • Will progress if: Albania defeat Spain AND Croatia defeat Italy AND Croatia do not win by more than one goal more than what Albania wins by
      • Example: Albania finishes second with a 1-0 victory, and a 2-0 victory to Croatia. But Croatia finishes second with a 1-0 Albania victory and a 3-0 Croatia victory
    • May progress if: Albania will finish third if
      • Both Italy v Croatia and Albania v Spain end in a draw.
      • If both Albania and Croatia lose, but lose within 2 goals of Croatia's losing margin.
      • If both Albania and Croatia win, but Croatia's winning margin is +2 on Albania's winning margin (as above)
    • Cannot progress if: Albania loses to Spain AND Croatia loses to Italy AND Albania lose by more than two goals of Croatia's losing margin.
GROUP C
This is the most confusing one, so is probably missing some nuances and is subject to change as I fix my errors.
  • England
    • Can progress if: A draw will secure England's passage in first or second.
      • A victory over Slovenia guarantees top of the group
      • England can finish in first with a draw if Denmark fails to defeat Serbia.
      • If Denmark defeats Serbia, England will need a 2-2 draw or higher to finish first in the group, otherwise they will finish second.
    • May progress if:
      • If England lose to Slovenia AND Serbia defeats Denmark, England will finish third in the group
    • Cannot progress if: England is guaranteed to finish in the top 3 of the group.
  • Denmark and Slovenia
    • I've given them their own section together because of how things stand.
    • If Denmark defeat Serbia AND England draws 0-0 or 1-1 with Slovenia, Denmark finish first, England Second, Slovenia Third.
    • If Denmark defeat Serbia AND Slovenia defeats England
      • The team with the higher winning margin OR most goals if the same winning margin OR fair play count back if the same result on the final match day will qualify in first, with the other in second. England will finish third
    • If both final group games end in a draw, the winner of the fair play countback between Denmark and Slovenia will progress in second place behind England, with Serbia in fourth.
    • If England defeats Slovenia AND Denmark do not lose to Serbia, Denmark will qualify in second behind England, with Serbia in fourth.
    • If both games end in a defeat for Slovenia AND Denmark, fair play countback will determine which team MAY progress in third place.

Interesting. But even black would have been better I would have thought.

Spanish keeper was wearing black. Italian keeper in the light/fluoro-ish green. At that level, it's something to consider as well (especially given Donnarumma went up for the late corner).

I know there is options for both the referee and the goalkeepers, but not sure what they all are. I believe Italy also has a red goalkeeper shirt that wouldn't have been able to be worn against Spain. Possible that the referees only have the blue, black and gold (I hate the gold though, can't see why they couldn't have fluoro yellow as is a normal option)

I agree about Italy bud.... a reliable striker away from being world class again... Defensively fairly sound against a Spanish side that has hit a purple patch of form with young go getters doing non-Spanish things... was a great game to watch this morning.

Turns out neon yellow was also an option, as well as the neon red, If we assume that Italy only has the red and green GK jerseys, then I think they just found the most optimal solution with the babycaca gold referee shirt

The gold is just silly. Fluro or just plain yellow would have been way better.

I think so too - but I'm assuming UEFA thought it was too close to Italy's GK. That leads me to think that Italy only has two GK colours (the green/yellow, and the red), and they couldn't change the GK to red, so the referee would have to change.

Of the 5 referee kits, that only leaves Black (Spanish GK used), Caca Gold (that was used) and Blue - that's the one I'm not sure why they didn't use it - they can't say blue and red clash, because Italy and Albania were allowed to do it. Must have had something to do with Spain being red with blue shorts - hence why Italy were also in the away kit.

Refs need love too mate.

Have you seen the picture of the lads in the crowd at the euros in all the ref kit. About 4 different colours and they've got flags and everything. hahahaha

Yeah man, just busting Nics chops on a Friday :) No ref, no game... simples... I might piss and moan like EVERY fan does at some decisions but have nothing but respect for those that sling the whistle.

Ive gotta say, from a pure ex player/fan perspective I am loving the reffing at this tournament. All I ever want (personally) is a non-biased ref happy to let the game flow and knowing when to step in if things get too out of hand... VAR still shits me, not that its decisions aren't always right but more so that a centimetre here and a centimetre there just suck all of the spontaneous "joy" out of the game sometimes...
