The report doesn't actually say 'Champions League' format. It says 'streamlined format'. Whatever that means is anyone's guess. Could be some sort of other compromise they've come up with. Either way, it's probably not something anyone actually wants.

Wasn't it rumoured that's it's two groups of eight? The eight NST clubs in one group, and the eight NPL winners in the other? (I say "winners" because I don't know if it's champions or premiers).

Pretty much everything has been rumoured, very little has actually been confirmed.

Who would even care at this point, all the steam from the FA cup and the interest around the 2nd division has died at this point. I don't see NPL teams generating more interest as per the new u23's squad rules, so any cup runs probably wont translate to interest. They have successfully killed it and will still make it 'happen', I think its going to be total disaster so that they can now confidently say "hey we did it and it didn't work so we are not trying again".

I know 3 of the 8 "original" NST clubs wont participate in that sort of thing ... at least that is the message they have passed on to their members.

Wow, after a very long time ‘away’ I thought this morning “Hey what happened with the NSD?” So I read the last 50 pages of this thread.
I honestly feel bad for those of you who have been living in hope on this … but to be honest it’s so much easier when you’ve totally given up. These days I just enjoy the occasional NPL match.
As a believer in the A League for 15 years, it’s now obvious that the A League needs to totally fail before anything sustainable like P&R and NSD etc can be put in place.
Sad but true.

I gave up on watching Australian football and expecting change around 2017. I don't watch the A-league or Socceroos/ Matildas. I coach at school and in the NPL. That is my contribution to football in Australia. Football Australia won't be getting any money from me.

I worked at an A-league academy a few years back and their distain for other clubs is unbelievable. They expect clubs to be happy to have their players poached but then don't want to support NPL clubs in anyway, such as being ambitious and wanting to climb up the pyramid. It turned me off even more. They basically want no competition to their monopoly.

What I find amazing is that we are at season 20, and Brisbane doesn’t even have a clubhouse of any sort where fans can actually meet/mix.

Yep my feelings as well re Al.
i really hoped originally a change is good but having it closed and the attitude towards below and yep arrogance I lost it.
Feck it - agree not getting my money no more long ago.
I support locally and feel good helping my local clubs.
NPL and below is the heartland of our game.

CO and that’s the smokes and mirrors about Al and clubs - lacks a home.

https://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news/football-australia-unveils-new-format-and-start-date-national-second-tier-competition

Key highlights of the NST competition model for 2025 include:

  • Commitment to Play: Football Australia, alongside the NST Foundation Clubs and key stakeholders, share a commitment to launch the NST Competition in 2025. This decision ensures alignment with the original strategic objectives of connecting the football pyramid in Australia and elevating iconic clubs to the national stage.
  • New Competition Structure: The NST will feature a 16-team format, consisting of group stage matches and culminating in an elimination Finals Series. This structure has been designed to ensure the competition model is sustainable while maintaining a high degree of competitive integrity and commercial appeal.
  • Team Composition: The eight NST Foundation Clubs will be granted automatic access and are joined by eight invitational clubs comprised of the Member Federation NPL State Premiers from the respective domestic season - delivering a national competition.
  • Season Timeline: The NST competition will be held annually between October and December, initially across nine matchday rounds, and concluding with a Championship Final in early December. The spring calendar window provides the agility to expand and align within the Domestic Match Calendar ensuring optimal fixturing for players, fans, and stakeholders.
  • Brand Launch: Football Australia can confirm the competition’s name, brand identity, marketing collateral, and the new trophy design will be unveiled in the coming months, setting the stage for a memorable debut season.

This is just the NPL finals series that we had up until 2019, with a few extra teams added.
This was always how it would end up. JJ even indicated this at the start of the process. A (old) UCL style comp always felt like the preference.

This is a franchise league, clubs who have paid to go in and play, isolating the rest of the pyramid. I welcome these franchises in the to the football ecosystem. A-league, Melbourne Croatia (Ukrainian Lions) welcomes all.

So clubs will play NPL football from Feb to Sept then this NSD from Oct-Dec or will they just play two months of football and not be in the NPL? Makes zero sense.
