+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xDogs have posted a watch this space hint for November 1st. I find it hard to believe that a player who was only allowed to negotiate on November 1 could do a deal on the same day. Maybe the hint indicates that we are interested in talking to some players. Technically, youre allowed to seek interest in players before Nov 1 but can only talk contracts after it. Im sure we would have sounded an interest in Pappenhuyzen (within the rules) and that may have swayed him to wait till Nov 1.... I am giving your theory an outside chance of being correct, because we released Papalii and we haven’t signed many players. Leo Thompson is the other guy we might be after. Hypothically if we somehow got Papps and Thompson that is a big step forward. We will need some of Foxy's salary.... next time around bro get your story straight first time. No hard feelings I like Fox and he still offers something. But Fox or Pappy isn't even a contest. Theres many on TK who want 2 big forwards.... Im happy with just 1 as long as we can improve on our spine first. As much as a clubs want to unearth the next big spine player, the truth is its easier to find and develop forwards within your junior ranks and recruit key spine players. Waiting to unearth good spine players while splashing money on forwards has never served any team well. Not in NRL history. I am happy with 1 extra forward. What we need is a forwards leader and Tom Amone might be the guy. Thompson could definitely become the guy. Second row, I think we have good options. Wingers and centres I am happy, especially if recruiting a fullback frees up Tracey. So fullback is the position that we might need to strengthen especially since our next gun fullback hasn't even played Flegg. Most other positions we have covered. Aside from the forwards who should be better in 2025, fullback is the obvious position where we could improve. Tracey is actually an NRL standard fullback and a pretty good player. But if we ranked all NRL fullbacks in order, Tracey is outside the top 10 and perhaps in the bottom 4. Pappy is top 10. There might be other options, but if we want, experience, pace and play making ability there are not many available options. Knights have just signed Leos twin to a development contract... #sackgus... Yeah that looks like a bad news for us, Pappy might be in the mix, but the Roosters releasing May might mean that they will chase Pappy. We could target May, could do a similar job to Leo. We just need a spare chair when the music stops... With Fox going we definitely have some cap space.. Do we actually have space as a result of Foxx's exit???... I think I heard or misheard on 2SM if we sack there is no cap dispensation???... I don't know, but I assume that we are not paying him a wage. If there is some clause in his contract that means that we have to pay him something that would count. I think that he could try legal action to get more money, but perhaps both parties have agreed to a deal.

There might be other options, but if we want, experience, pace and play making ability there are not many available options. We just have to appreciate that there is only 1 FB position in the team, its a key position and its not unusual for a top player in this position to be the highest paid player in the team. Once you accept all that, there should be no concerns if you had to fork out 1M plus to get the right man. For too long, we have either ignored this fact or for some reason were willing to throw 80% of top FB money on a manufactured FB (DWZ) rather than just pay 100% on a proven top FB. The fact we have also lacked talent in other key spine positions made this even more of a focal point.. Is Paps worth a million or more to us?
Let’s look at the best fullbacks in the game.
Edwards Teddy Ponga Turbo Paps Drinky Fidow Walsh
There are more but that’s my list in order of the best currently. I’m only including Walsh because of that one year. The rest are all well deserved of their spots. Walsh is about to sign for more than a million a year with Brisbane. So Paps with his age and experience should make similar money. Or are we better off spending that money on other positions?
A forwards leader and/or a Fullback will definitely improve our side. Given that Armone, Hughes or Underhill could eventually become the leader we might already have what we need. Patolo, Fifita and Hopoi are long shots. The young guy Glen might be our next X-Factor fullback, but he could be 4 years away from an NRL debut. Ideally we sign both and I don't care if the forward is Thompson or May. If would have the young Tigers fullback Bulla in the list after Pappy. Paps seems to be the only proven quality fullback available. If we get him I hope that he has a better run with injuries... I can't believe Foran seems like a robust player now when he seemed to be made of glass when he played for us. If Bulla was available, I prefer him to Pappy because he has had fewer injuries and seems to be more robust. We know Tracey is a pretty good plan B if Pappy was injured and we know Pappy on deck for the semis would make a difference. Maxxy is our man, just needs a lucky year without injury... Tough in that position... Shoes has it in him too... Just needs more games under the belt... Back row is stacked and can inspire... I think that we have more depth in 2025, less need for the Real King and Curran to play injured week after week. Underhill in the Flegg GF looked like a man playing against boys, as did one of our centres. Hughes has the size and a bit of mongrel, also a pretty good motor. If a few years Hughes and Underhill will be a great starting prop combination, size , aggression, workrate, fitness technique, they both have all of that. Underhill has a bit more speed, desire and ability to read the play.

Warriors are offloading Bunty...
Can we turn him into a half decent prop?
He will get fit at the Dogs and we have never had a player called Bunty because Peter Kelly refused to change his name to Bunty.
For prop getting a guy with size, fit, strong, and injury free is half the battle.
Bunty was poor at the Warriors the last few seasons, but if he is prepared to put in the work, he might be worth a punt.
IMO, this is where fullback is different to prop. A club needs lots of props because injury/ suspension can happen. Most can do a job, and we squeaked by with a more or less empty cupboard last season.
A fullback we need quality, not quality, small differences between a fullbacks ability can be the difference between winning a losing.
If signing Bunty means we get Pappy, welcome aboard Bunty, and don't let Dman cut your hair.
Actually, with Bunty, Curran, and Toups, we would be right up there for the most hair in an NRL 17, and many of the young guys could grow their hair.... age of Aquarius

As much as i rate both Edwards and Teddy, they are more your solid FBs without the flashy stuff. They excel in teams with very good halves. Tracey is a poor mans version of these guys. But we dont have very good halves. We have one if the weakest halves pairing in the comp. And so we need that flashy FB. Anyone of the remaining guys you mentioned would have an immediate positive impact to our team. We are desperate for a game breaker at FB and we simply cannot ignore that fact any longer. The way i see it is like this....if we can get Hunt at HB, we can live with Tracey at FB. But if we dont get Hunt, we absolutely MUST get a game breaker at FB. If we cant both, id give us a real shot at winning the comp in the next 2 years...

Fine with him starting at hooker and moving to lock, covering injuries at halfback, lock and second row. Or occasionally starting at halfback with the halfback starting off the bench.

I don't see a major problem with our halves.
We made the 8 and the Dragons didn't, though Flanno was more to blame than Hunt.
Against Manly our defence cost us in the end, though we missed some opportunities to score earlier.
Lock is a key position for us a Mann / Hayward rotation is great, KO is likely to be even better.
Mann being out costs us in attack and defence, Curran, King and Kiks were probably carrying injuries.
Tracey and Kiraz also probably injured.
IMO teams can carry injures until they can't.
Sexton didn’t have a great game, but will be better for the run.

Hunt is close to retiring. I think we would be better off signing a younger half or waiting on Woods.
Tracey is certainly not the greatest fullback in the comp but his ball playing is better than most. I agree most of the better fullbacks would improve us.
But looking at my list.
Ponga and Turbo would be off the field more than on it. Similar to Paps. Neither have done any good with the halves they have. So unlikely to improve us greatly.
Fido’s and Drinky certainly have improved their teams. But haven’t given their teams much greater success than us.
Walsh is clearly the one that could be great but just signed on with the Broncos for five years.

Hunts a no... Too likely to be a pain in the arse... Burto and 7exy on the up... I find it funny how so many fans both here and TK are worried about the slight chance a very good player will have a downturn in elite level form, yet they seem to be ok with an average player only having a slight chance of improving to elite level. It astounds me. I know the salary of both players come into consideration but this isn't a business of turning a profit. Its about winning comps.

Hunt was a far more consistent halfback in the Broncos U20s. If he was going to produce that form in the top grade he would have done it by now. He works out in the QLD SOO side because he has to play a simple role. He played in some talented Broncos sides that didn't win the comp. So good player but below average NRL half is my rating. But probably the best utility player in the comp.

Also a good fit for the Fins and perhaps the Titans. At the Dogs is a real long shot, Halfback at the Dogs will not happen, Gus and Cirro are far too smart for that. I would pay about 400K for Hunt, he isn't a good halfback. What are the stats on % of games won with him at halfback?

I'm not worried about a downturn in form... I'm worried about him being a whiney sod...

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xDogs have posted a watch this space hint for November 1st. Burton and Mahoney will need to be playing at their best or he'll hold them to account! I want him for that reason above all else.

I have revised my opinion of the Flegg Fullback Cochrane.
Tries to use his pace to run around people and create overlaps, had some success.
Doesn't run straight often enough, but hard to judge from one game.
Raw speed, skill and positional instincts might be OK.
It will be interesting to see if he gets a shot at reserve grade.
There has to be a reason why we let Papalli leave.

If we are signing anyone important, it doesn't seem to be happening fast.

+xIf we are signing anyone important, it doesn't seem to be happening fast. Could just be dotting i's and crossing t's.... Only problem is, there are no i's or t's in Ryan Pappenhuyzen so we are at an impasse.... Benjamin Hunt on the other hand.....

Wonder what kind of scrabble score you get for Pappenhuyzen?
