I'm useless at it, and no-one would take me seriously as I'm not from Perth

Are you on the GFU Facebook page? Maybe worth raising there. Maybe if all of us on FFT pressed the issue on the GFU Facebook page, together we could convince someone to do something about it.

To be honest, if someone was going to do it, you'd think it'd be done by now

It's like the club in the off-season.

They shut up shop and nothing works.

Hasn't worked properly for the last couple of seasons, but yeah, it seems to be completely kaput now.

Whoever runs the forum doesn't appear to update the forum version or uses a really weak password. It's had various SQL, PHP, and phpBB exploits take it out over the years. Appears to be what currently has it down.

Players are starting to get snapped up by other clubs, Murdocca, Simon and several others are off the market already.

Apparently we've ruled out signing Kewell, and we offered Garcia an absolutely piss weak contract, but his negotiations with Heart have broken down recently, Perth may return with a decent contract. Negotiations over Nagai are also at a halt last I heard. His club want him back by February but Edwards say all season or nothing, hopefully one club backs down, because even having him until February would be great!

The possibility is also there for us to pick up Ryan Williams on Loan from Fulham and Corey Gameiro is still on the market after stating that he won't be at Fulham next year. Kisnorbo is yet to pick up a club. Well.

The main points that interest me are, which of the boys in Korea come off contract now and what sort of overseas scouting is Edwards doing?

I hope the no news is just a sign that Edwards is busy behind the scenes, working his contacts and trying to organise his team for next year. Probably the dealings with Nagai being the bottleneck because left winger is the priority and he can't really start any offers until they get an outcome there.

Gameiro and Harold under-study to Smeltz next year would be great.

I suspect Edwards is keen to use Harold out wide. Like most young fast strikers in the A-League I suspect he'll end up being used as our right winger this year. The part that pisses me off the most is that Dodd was re-signed. Was Edwards responsible for that? It means that something like 200K from our Salary cap is used up on a player who will miss the season through injury anyway, and even if he wasn't injured, he's been a below par player for a few years now.

No more Brent Griffiths available like Glory_Perth wanted ;)

Perth will be able to sign an injury replacement for Dodd, so technically his salary won't hinder Perth's salary cap!

For a below par player he has just as much impact, if not more than Smeltz.

Dodd's contract was signed a full 18 months before Edwards came anywhere near the club. He hasn't signed anything new and the club is honoring its commitments.

that's true about the injury replacement, that'd slipped my mind.

Scroll are you sure? The contract Dodd signed was a 2+1 and i never heard that the club ended up offering the 1, but someone on here said they did towards the end of last season?

Still clubless, he was on my PG shopping list as soon as he was released. Gameiro is another we could end up with.

If we Signed those two plus Richie Cardozo, Paddy Kisnorbo and another versatile defender, i think we'd be right up there.
Is Van Den Brink still a free agent??

Don't know the fine-print but based on every other public +1 contract we've had with players (see: J.Coyne's exit from the club) the +1 is triggered automatically after a certain number of games. We have not made any announcements about re-signing him, only that he is contracted for next season and we are honoring that.

Of the senior losses last season, both Bas and Billy Mehmet are uncontracted to my knowledge, however I believe Bas has closed the Australian chapter of his life. Billy has said in twitter exchanges with current Glory players that he is still interested in the A-League should offers be made. Potentially a good pick up for another team, don't see him wanting to link up with Glory though even with the management shift.

Fair enough. The whole Dodd situation just pissed me off because we really should never have gone after him in the first place, let along offer him 3 years.

My ideal list of players now:

James Meyer (Released by Brisbane)
Richie Cardozo (NPL)
Paddy Kisnorbo (Off contract at Leeds)
Scott Galloway (Released by Melbourne Victory)
Ryan Williams (On loan from Fulham)
Corey Gameiro (Released by Fulham)
Neil Kilkenny (If Bristol's relegation triggers a release clause, he'd be a fantastic pick up)
Richard Garcia (Off Contract at Melbourne Heart)
Suree Sukha (Buriram United, unsure of contract arrangements)

Players we may still lose:

Michael Thwaite (Portland Timbers)
Danny Vukovic (Fulham)
Riu Nagai (PGFC want him for the whole season, Osaka want him back by February)

Rumours surrounding our club and Adelaide seem to suggest that Vukovic will go overseas, while we pick up Golekovic and Adelaide sign Dean Bouzanis. However it's merely speculation at this stage, and i doubt it will happen.

Perth is still signing shitty +1 contracts even after all the shit that went down with the Jamie Coyne fiasco.

Yes, a good signing, needs to go somewhere and get regular game time to take the next step. Better player than Isaka Cernak

I was led to believe that the Glory were due back for preseason training this week or next, it will be interesting to see the make up of the squad. Particularly who will or will not be present, there are still a few players that are out of contract with no announcement as to whether they are staying or leaving.

Ali said that Perth had 15 contracted players for next season, including Cameron, Cernack and the young goal keeper. With very little talk from the club so far and a number of visa spots available. I wonder what Ali has lined up...

Also very interested to see how Ali approaches this season. Can't quite work out who are in the 15 contracted players though... does any one know if Jamieson is still contracted?

One player who was very frustrated at a lack of chances last season was Makeche. Noticed that Ali didn't chuck him in late in the season, when he could have. Now Makeche is having a bit more of a run out in the State League with NTC it seems... (this from footballwa.net)

"Ndumba Makeche played the starring role as the National Training Centre recorded an emphatic 6-2 victory over Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval. Makeche, who is under contract to Perth Glory, ran riot against the home defence, scoring five times before BorBor Sambindi put the icing on the cake with the development squad’s sixth goal in the closing minutes. “He’s grown, he’s taken on some really good qualities and he’s developed as a person,” NTC coach John Gibson said of Makeche. “We’ve got a fairly high opinion of Ndumba, he’s come into our environment and he’s just actually been magnificent.”

It's possible and logical that Edwards may seek to trial some players, including a VISA player or two, during pre-season. A number of other A-League coaches have done this before, including Poppa at Wanderers and up at Roar. I'm not sure Fergie, Mitchell or others ever did? It seems the way to go. Then you test how a player looks/performs on the ground, how he gells in your formation, positional demands and how he may gell with the team.

It's a LONG pre-season too, so use that to advantage by doing this. And being in South Africa - why NOT trial a South Africa, Zimbabwean or what not player in camp over there and in some friendlies? There could be an available gem or two, even NT level player, worth 'looking at' anyway?

Why just have it as easy season holiday/team bonding camp or whatever it is. It's expensive exercise too - didn't Sage and co imply that last season?

Atleast look at some players over there?! Surely Edwards and Naven will?!

These two examples are probably a bit over-reach, bar a bit too high, considering their reputation (SA NT Stars and recent Euro pros) and perhaps wage range. Erasmus may still be under contract too, apparently and if so that rules him out - especially with transfer rumours to bigger club in South Africa's league.

Bernard Parker though, I'm surprised he's not still in Europe and he's a guy who can play off Smeltz or out wide, like where Nagai played? He's available as contract up soon, but he's entering peak years and doubt he'd be too cheap, but you never know?

http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/bernard-parker/profil/spieler_90199.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katlego_Mphela is a top talent too, should be back in Europe - Still remember his terrific long range goal at the 09 Confed Cup! But Glory don't need a player in that position.

RedKat wrote:
Thats a fair point. Think the flight from Perth to Joberg is like 6 hours so players could move to Perth, probably getting a better wage and be relatively close to home

Indeed and quite a few South African expats here - though how many of them would be interested in football, they are more 'white fellas', to excuse the term, who follow Rugby/Force probably. But may always draw in some more fans and even interest? Might build links with South Africa or a South African club through it?

But anyway, Glory don't even need to sign a player, just look at some? That's all I'm saying. Considering we ARE looking for a VISA player or two. AND If Edwards DOES find one, of sufficient quality, within position/area of need and within a reasonable wage rate - then all good?

People mention the immense talent in Africa all the time, albeit usually West Africa, but there's surely some under-rated talent out South Africa way. Though their league doesn't have a Salary Cap like ours, so I presume Modise, Parker and co are far from under-rated, locally (Pay wise atleast)!

Mitchell and Fergie did trial players each preseason, Severino is one name that comes to mind and there were plenty of others. State league player Gustavo Maralunda trained with Perth all preseason and right up until Fergie was sacked. Glory have looked to tap into the African market, I can't remember his name but one player even played against them on there trip last year. They stated in one of their travel logs that Fergie had tried unsuccessfully to sign him.

VOR has said previously that he thinks Glory are not in a hurry to sign any more foreigners. But Ali despite his youth revelation, has stated that his aim is to be competetive first and foremost. While giving a pathway for local youth, and he showed that by starting Heffernan at striker when he had young Makeche at his disposal.

Not to sure about Pants and Jamo, if you go through the known contracted players there is already 15. Although when Ali talked on lets talk football, he stated that Woodcock was signed as back up to Jamo. So who knows!!

@au_sesquip Woodcock and Davies are designated NYL players, of which the club is allowed three.
3:50pm - 2 May 13

He's the beat writer for the The West so I'm gathering he would have the info. So that means 5 more players that can be signed and 4? can be Overseas players.

Could do with a full back, striker and wide midfielder looking at that list.

From a BBC article 5 years back - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7778449.stm

Average wage is about US$20,000 + five years worth of rises. Top wages are around US$240,000 + five years worth of rises. Even considering that the rand has moved from 5.5 to 9.5 to the AU/US dollar, their top wage earners aren't exactly poor.

So basically we'd probably have zip chance of signing anyone on a top wage - $240,000 to live on in South Africa is more than a $1,000,000 here. I know - I've lived there.

An average wage earner would be easily obtainable - but would we really be looking to sign an average player on a VISA spot? I don't see it too likely that we'd sign a South African player. Maybe a 'coloured' or white player trying to 'escape' modern South Africa, sure. But even so, a long shot I think.
