Well what a novelty that is - the words International match and Smeltz injury in the one paragraph.

I know different everything, but getting beaten from a 3 - Nil half time may also ring a few bells with Glory fans.
(Why do we keep bringing this up? Because some of us will never get over it).

Anyway, be interesting to see what they do with Maclaren this week.
He scored a couple of hat tricks for the Yoof, so they promptly dragged him from the Yoof - who then got trounced for the first time in a couple of weeks - and sat him on the bench in Brisbane for 90 minutes.
Certainly a rewarding promotion on the back of his recent scoring.
Whether he could cut it or not in the main team, or whether our service to strikers is crap or not, there was at least some opportunity to give him a run somehow in the second half last week, given the way we keep performing up front.

So here's once again expecting wholesale changes on the back of our recent form.
Presumably Thwaites back in, youngest defender out, and that would be about it.
Then probably find we may decide to rest O'Neill, since he did ok last week.

UPDATE: Perth Glory striker Shane Smeltz is in doubt for Sunday’s crucial A-League game away to Wellington Phoenix after withdrawing from an international match with a groin injury.

Smeltz, 32, was due to line up as a substitute for New Zealand against Japan in Tokyo tonight, but was pulled out of the squad as a precaution just hours before the match.

The injury was described as a “minor groin problem” in a media release issued by New Zealand Football this afternoon.

All Whites coach Neil Emblen said medical staff were wary of aggravating the injury.

“It’s disappointing for Shane but after consulting with the medical staff it was decided the injury would hinder his performance,” Emblen said.

“There was also the potential of further aggravation, especially given the rain that has fallen today.”

Glory are on a four-match losing streak and have slipped to last place on the A-League ladder, but are still clinging to slim hopes of reaching the finals.

They sit seven points and goal difference behind sixth-placed Sydney FC, with six games to play.

Smeltz is Glory’s top scorer this season and netted their only goal in a 3-1 defeat to Brisbane last week.

Young Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren could return to the starting line-up if Smeltz is ruled out.

Glory said tonight Smeltz will join up with the rest of the squad when they arrive in New Zealand.

He's just too broken-down these days.

I love what he's done for us, I will always remember him banging in a second-half hat trick in our final against Melbourne Hearts RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, and all the other things he's done for us, but his body is falling apart on him.

Exactly - why?
Do people running this club not know what our deficiencies are?

Will see how NZ's King Carlos goes this week.
We've had Rogic, the Fink, Broich, etc, now it's the turn of King Carlos.
For our abundance of really, really, really good holding/defensive midfielders, it's these opposition guys that are carving us up each week.

This would pretty much guarantee that Gallas is a one season "wonder" then and free up a visa/marquee spot where we need quality up front or in the midfield.

Djulbic can compete with Thwaite, Gallas, O'Neill, Burns and McGarry for 1 of the 4 centre-back positions in Lowe's formation.

With Smeltz, Sernas, Nebo, Harold, Sidnei, Maclaren and Zahra all battling for the 4 centre-forward positions... everything is sweet! 4 backs, 4 forwards just need to get some form into the wide-backs and you've got a football team.

@ Scoll - I hear what you are saying, but I think it's pretty likely that we do have our coach.

Even if we don't, and as unsatisfactory as it may be, Lowe is right that we do need to move for quality AUSTRALIAN players as they come available, as by June it will be too late.

IMO Djulbic was badly let down by Mitchell the first time around. Mitchell didn't back him and give him public support when he was accused of spitting at the ground with the intention of disrespecting a referee. As coach, Mitchell should have publically stood by the player and helped him through. He didn't. Djulbic left. We lost a very good young player.

Djulbic (31yo) and Thwaite (30yo) as starting CB's is a great combination, and leaves us visa spots to try to sort out other problem areas.

That is, assuming out facebook announcement doesn't lead Djulbic to be snapped up by other clubs!

I like Dino. Bad temper, but gave his all and was serviceable to us. Modern A-League starting standard I'm not sure about, but it wouldn't kill me to see him back on the pitch for us.

I agree this isn't necessarily the area we need to strengthen first though.

I can only see this as a cover for Gallas leaving come season end.

Shame Madaschi is not still around (or is he, does anyone know what he is doing now???)

Still leaves Glory very weak in midfield even though Lowe thinks the recent signings have strengthened it.

Expect King Carlos to tear Glory apart in midfield this weekend.

Glory sorely need a MF of the ilk of Carlos/Miller/Broich/ADP.

These sorts of players will lay the killer pass to bring other players into play and other teams need to double team to nullify, thus freeing up another attacker.

Glory does not have a player like this , teams have figure this out and can essentially mark out the attackers and control the midfield, the exact opposite to what Glory does ATM.

I actually think in Nebo Marinkovic we might *have* that creative player we need... certainly alongside Sidnei there's enough in the attacking third to think we might be providing enough chances for a player of Smeltz's calibre.

What we are missing is the cluster of midfielders *behind* those creative players... the guys who want to get on the ball and make as many passes as possible and move the team forward all game.

Even if we had Hernandez or Del Piero in the team, they would struggle to create much when every single attacking play involves a CB laying it wide to a full-back who hoofs it up the line to a winger who then waits for support from the same full-back or the striker.

The way we play ADP would barely touch the ball and Broich would be up against an opposition FB, CB *AND* defensive mid every time he got the ball, limiting his impact. Stick a Miller, Murdocca, Bratten, Isaias or Riera in our team however and you might suddenly see Nebo and Sidnei having a much greater influence on results.

F1 Dave - Djulbic has been spending his best years overseas in some of the strongest leagues in Asia - I'm not sure how regularly he's been featuring recent times, but no doubt he will bring quality on returning...

Then again....

Thought that about Rostyn Griffiths too and look how he's taken his time to 'click into gear' :/

But I prefer to be optimistic and like Rostyn he's a 'proven' product at this level with still some productive years ahead.

Rostyn and he will have ALL our next coming pre-season to re-adjust and click back into top fitness and form.

Seems so - And Djulbic would be a great signing and welcome returnee - another West Aussie and former Glory coming home - probably an upgrade/better value for money than most of our 'senior' CB stocks at present, including *cough* Mr Marquee *cough*...

Indeed, this?

And IF Smeltz IS on the way out, as expected, too... then we 'may' chase Marquee quality in the attacking third - then again, if Sage is still 'cost cutting' then we may give the Marquee idea a rest for a while. If we did, that'd be understandable IMHO. Marquee or no marquee Glory just needs a good quality striker (Jury out on Sernas :/) and a good quality AM (Jury still out on Marinkovic :/)!!!

This is getting ridiculous now, why are we STILL signing players before we have sorted the coaching position? Who's to say the new coach will need him next season?

Oh wait this is Perth, Lowe has the job in the bag I forgot...

Next seasons line-up?

--------------New Keeper--------------------
Risdon---Gallas---Djulbic---Jamieson
----------McGarry--Thwaite-------------
Hersi-----------Nebo------------Sidnei
-----------------Smeltz---------------------

New coach's instruction... keep going with that plan of bringing in talented youngsters. But don't piss off any of our core playing group.

Good luck to whoever gets the job... unless it's KL in which case he's buttered his own bread.
