I still give the club the benefit of the doubt to think that they know the other candidates are better than Lowe, and Lowe is purely being considered as the "cheap" option.
Even with Arnold suddenly available, I don't think he comes at "A-League" price as he's a former Socceroo coach with a reference from Guus Hiddink, has won a Premiership and a Championship, got a gig in Japan and was interviewed by Sheffield United.
Basically... Arnold comes in as an equivalent to the sorts of foreign coaches we'd be in the market for, and therefore will presumably cost just as much.
While Arnold is better than Lowe, I doubt he's better than what we can get for equivalent money... therefore I don't think we should be considering Arnold and I also don't think Arnold's availability effects Lowe's chances (unless Arnold is willing to work on the cheap to get back into the HAL but with Sydney and Newcastle also around I think it'll be a case of clubs chasing him, not him chasing clubs).

Sign Arnold Release Smeltz Sign Rogic as Australian marquee when he is released by Celtic (which he will be if he doesn't have a storming World Cup)

Yeah but the thing is the list is down to 3, not a whole bunch of people and there's no one else that's an Aussie on it. That means they've left him up there as the best Aussie candidate to take the job. That is not there just for the sake of it, especially at the business end of finalising things when you're meant to be making a decision this week ("next" week). The club is after 2 Foreign Coaches, there was 4 on the list, so what has the cost of a Foreign Coach got to do with it. If GA is "like a Foreign Coach"...why does anything change? If the club throws money at a proper, decent coach then it makes a change from throwing money at overage and under-performing players.

I'm hoping Lowe is only there as the incumbent and given the season is still going (for a few more days), as it is fairly standard practice. I doubt very likely we'd get Arnold, I'm not that upset by that tbh.

Steve McGarry - should he stay or should he go? What value has he added this season? Has it been enough? Can we do better? Thoughts guys? AndyToddsElbow wrote:In the Glory interested in Arnold article: Joffa wrote: Caretaker Kenny Lowe, and two foreign coaches, have been competing for the job .

](*,) ](*,) ](*,) As Hottie has said, his odds have shortened again. I really hope they go after Arnold now full gusto. Arnold has now fell in their laps so to speak, so they definitely need to go after him. Arnold >>>>>>>> Lowe Indeed - That's somewhat perplexing - Lowe is/was the best of the Aussie candidates... the numerous Aussies amongst the list of 50 or so applicants?! Surely NOT?! Or... that can't be so that the other candidates were less qualified - I guess we can only presume the likes of Rudan, Bleiberg and some other former A-League coaches and Aussie Pro-Licence guys etc... may not have applied for the gig after-all?! Especially given a specialist third party was employed specifically for this process?! ANd the likes of Bosnich and co are overseeing the final selection, providing their recommended candidate at the end of this process?! Again, in Bozza we Trust? But yeah, no doubt Arnie is in the mix now, but I doubt we're the only ones in the mix for his services either (SFC?) - I just hope the latter doesn't force a rash/panic decision contrary to this long, methodical process! Edit: 'Lowe as cheap option?' Bovs, you may be onto something?! Actually, Pr1mo may be right - must be the 'default advantage' of incumbency? He's still a 1/3 or 33% chance if you like, but ofcourse it makes us wonder about the other 2/3 - WHO are those 2 variables in this equation?! Or it's 1/4 now, with Arnie in the mix! Quote:Lowe wants to keep job
Kenny Lowe could be coaching Perth Glory for the last time against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium tomorrow, but says he remains hopeful of taking on the role full-time next season.
Lowe presided over a 10-game winless streak after taking over from Alistair Edwards in December but has increased his chances of remaining with the club after two wins in their past two games.
Glory have embarked on a wide-ranging search to find their new coach with former Socceroos boss Graham Arnold the latest name linked to the job.
However, the club has not ruled out retaining caretaker coach Lowe.
Speaking after training yesterday, Lowe said he had enjoyed his time and hoped to continue.
"I came in to do a job, I think I've actually done a good job, believe it or not," he said.
"I came into a situation that was fairly difficult … I've always been optimistic, I've always tried to do my thing diligently and I think that's starting to show.
"You can see the playing group, that's not a splintered playing group. I think they've got belief now. It's the same as anything, you don't marry a girl the first day you meet her, you get to know her hopefully.
"They've got to know me, I've got to know them and there's a little bit of trust and honesty there.
"Everyone is starting to know each other and the lads we've brought in have acclimatised a little bit. Hopefully we get an opportunity to roll on with that next year."
Lowe said he had not been told when the decision on his future would be made.
"They'll decide in their own time," Lowe said.
"If the weren't speaking to other people they wouldn't be doing their job. They need to cover all the bases and make the right decision."
Glory were sitting eighth on the ladder ahead going into this weekend but remain a chance to collect the club's first wooden spoon if results don't go their way.
They meet a Sydney FC side sitting sixth and hoping to lock in a finals berth in the final game of the regular season.
Lowe said suggestions the Glory had nothing to play for were wide of the mark, particularly given it would be retiring captain Jacob Burns' last game in purple.
Another player preparing for his final A-League game this weekend is former Socceroos hero Harry Kewell.
Kewell will captain Melbourne Heart in a crunch fixture against his home-town side, Western Sydney Wanderers today at AAMI Park.
Meanwhile, Sydney FC have slammed the decision to clear Wanderers striker Brendon Santalab of racially vilifying Ali Abbas.
The Football Federation Australia disciplinary committee decided to drop the charges of racial abuse against Santalab on Thursday, citing a lack of evidence and the possibility that Abbas may have misheard the comments made.

Let's face it. If they could have gotten away with it without any recrimination they'd have signed Lowe in February.
Now they're just running their best PR campaign to try and get him in and get the fans accepting it.

Just curious - how many here have answered the club survey? Good chance to communicate directly with the club. If enough members mention displeasure with Burns and Lowe it might finally sink in?

Yeah, I answered it. I tempered my written response because quite obviously they'd ignore anything remotely smelling of passion as being over-the-top. I simply implied that saying one thing and not backing it up well enough is never a good way to do business, and that obviously the coach/players stuff this year was atrocious.
Kind of hoping that the 'style of football' or 'on field entertainment' questions are actually considered at years' end...

Email, if you're a member. http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/arnie-tempted-by-%E2%80%98the-glamour%E2%80%99-of-glory/89783Quote: Arnie tempted by ‘the glamour’ of Glory
Graham Arnold admits he is tempted by the opportunity to potentially coach Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League.
Arnold, who was sacked by J-League club Vegalta Sendai last week, will return to home to Australia later this week.
It's understood the former Central Coast boss will speak with Glory owner Tony Sage as the Western Australian club look to appoint a new full-time boss as soon as possible.
Glory had reportedly narrowed their short-list to two candidates this week but will now hold off on any decision until talks with Arnold.
The championship-winning boss is sure to have no shortage of suitors if he is to return to the A-League, with Newcastle Jets also still to appoint a new coach while Frank Farina's Sydney FC future remains unclear.
"It (Perth) is definitely a job that would interest me,'' Arnold said in Perth's Sunday Times newspaper.
"I've always looked at Glory as one of the glamour clubs of the A-League, they've under-achieved this year and there's been some turmoil around the club.
"You want to be successful, you want to fill that Shed and stadium each game and get them back to the glory days when they were the benchmark of the NSL.
"I look at their playing roster and they've got some very talented kids for sure. Many go overseas very young, you'd want to keep them in Perth and try and get them to stay in the A-League for longer.
"I've got to get tidied up and then have a holiday to clear my head after everything that's happened in the last week.
"I hope that I can finalise things here and fly out Monday or Tuesday so I'll be back in Australia by the end of the week.''
Glory CEO denied Arnold had now become favourite to get the job, although conceded his record is hard to ignore.
"Graham Arnold is somebody we've got to consider and clearly there's been some preliminary discussions with him,'' Brewer said.
While interim boss Kenny Lowe has done a decent job since taking over from the sacked Alistair Edwards, it's believed he won't get the full-time gig.
Fuck me, we've got glamour

Well stuff me if I support a club who thinks coaching 4 wins from 17 games is decent. That is pathetic. No, we weren't a top 4 side in hindsight, but at least we could give the 6 a go. We changed coaches, we beefed up the squad, we failed miserably, and went completely downhill. Now just avoiding the wooden spoon is considered a decent outcome by my club. What a joke. Have never been more disgusted in the individuals who degenerated this season into a complete fiasco and devoid of any immediate hopes for next season. Even the Ron Smith days would give this lot a run for their money. Now I've just seen yesterday's Worst re DDS: "At Glory, De Silva has grown under the tutelage of Australian internationals Jacob Burns and Michael Thwaite and former Arsenal captain William Gallas".

Bit of a waste if he should not play each week. Foreign spots should be for performers each week, not baggage. On that note Sernas should also go, not impressed with him. Marinkovic, Gallas (on much reduced wages), Sidnei I would keep.

Before the last game I felt that if he could qualify as an Australian (has he been here long enough?) that it wouldn't be the end of the world to keep him on low wages. But that last Sydney game just reminded me that he's not even as good as the much maligned C.Edwards, and a player like Edwards is much more likely to improve, where as McGarry is more likely to continue to slide.

McGarry is a great guy to have around the club, and if he was an aussie re-signing him would seem a no brainer.
These foreign spots are getting scarce though and that's the problem for mine, you've got to be getting the most out of them... Are with with McGazza? Not sure...

I tend to agree and have for a long while. He should be eligible for citizenship soon enough, given he's been here since early 2010. That is something I factored in his favoured before, as too he apparently being a good clubman and veteran presence to have around a younger squad... So I'm kind of torn too - but I'm leaning more and more against recent times. His performances this season have been below standard, let alone what's required of a VISA. To be harsh, any Aussie could've performed the role he did and it was arguably only due to his experience and squad status he was persisted with over 'inexperienced' alternatives. We lacked the quality in the midle, so had to fall back on the likes of he. Flipside, we can't afford to have a veteran like he as just a bit-part player, can we? Another Terry McFlynn-type (He has citizenship)? That's against the club's new ethos, philosophy, of promoting young talent like C.Edwards, like B.O'Neill and others?! He's caught between a rock and hard place in a way - definitely not good enough as a VISA talent, given where the league is at these days and evident by Glory's poor performance levels, which he 'shares' his part (Not scapegoating by any means). If he's a veteran squaddie, then that may limit opportunities for the young West Aussies coming through OR he may enhance squad strength and depth by increasing squad competition (Forcing Edwards and O'Neill to lift their standards?)? But the issue in a way is - would that happen? Or will having an experienced VISA player keep him as automatically a 'default starter' as he has been this season, over the 'less experienced' despite form, performance levels and what not? Because I think that is what has frustrated this season, rather than McGarry himself - despite how ordinary the team's performances etc... others were chopped and changed, but McGarry largely stayed? For 'a regular starter/CM', who's a VISA player - we can and SHOULD do better! Just goes back to the new coaching regime, their approach, how they view this team, under their philosophy, going forward. AndyToddsElbow wrote:Let's face it. Flipside maybe I'm naively optimistic - I think we're surely set for either Arnie or an exciting, third-way, foreign coach - surely a guy with his pro-licence - may or may not be Gombau-esque? :o :p But need to moderate those expectations again. :p Edited by GloryPerth: 14/4/2014 07:44:26 PM

Can't agree with that. IMO he's got slower and less effective as the year has gone on. His main asset is his work rate, he's no ADP/Hernandez etc.. who can walk around and set stuff up. As far as I recall, he could be signed as an Australian player next season- think he comes off import status sometime early this year? But I would definitely not sign him. Was a mistake to sign him this year - should have kept Cordoba instead. Don't want to see it repeated next year, with McGarry around keeping someone younger out of the team. We need a dynamic midfield, now that Burns has gone. He may be a great guy, but if he wants to keep playing with us, he can play in our NPL team and help the kids out from there. If he goes, I will wish him all the best and be grateful for his efforts, but I think his time has come.

The whole "best Aussie available" / "last Aussie on the shortlist" think is a bit of a red herring for me in the coach appointment process.
Realistically, it doesn't come down to local or foreign, but cheap/expensive and known/unknown. Lowe, being a known & cheap option, has a distinct advantage over not only virtually all realistic foreign candidates but also probably the majority of local candidates where I expect even the likes of Aloisi, Arnold, Kosmina, etc. would command greater salaries due to their higher profiles.
I'm a little surprised the final shortlist of 3 wouldn't have included, as examples, Lowe in preference to other available rookie/untested coaches (i.e. he won out over a Mori, Phillips, MIlicic, etc), Kosmina in preference to other higher profile locals (i.e. he won out over Aloisi, Bleiberg, etc.) and whichever foreigner was identified as the best candidate.
Having made those decisions, it would then be a matter of assessing the benefit of the foreign coach (or Kosmina-standard coach) against the extra salary and deciding whether the benefit is worth the cost.
I can only presume the fact that Lowe is already the only local candidate, that they have already assessed what a Kosmina, Bleiberg, Aloisi, etc. could bring to the table and decided Lowe is better value for money. To be honest, as much as I don't like that conclusion I can understand it. None of the former HAL coaches jump out as an obvious source of success.
Therefore all that remains is to assess the foreign candidates and the benefits they offer against the extra cost they would incur.
Arnold, I would speculate, would cost just as much as the sorts of foreign managers the club has been looking at. Therefore I wouldn't consider him as competing with Lowe as the preferred Aussie candidate... I would consider him as competing against the best identified top-end foreign coach that we could realistically afford.
Basically... Arnold being available shouldn't, in my estimation, effect the decision the club will make in choosing between a more expensive option with a promise of great success but a hint of the unknown, or a cheaper option that through there process has been identified as Lowe in preference to any other applicants of that standard.
For everyone on here, I'm sure it's a no-brainer that the extra cost of a quality coach is nothing compared to the rewards it will bring not only in potential on-field success but also returned goodwill from the fan base. But whether the decision-makers come to the same conclusion we will have to wait and see.

Except cheaper is better for Sage unless someone else pays. If Arnold and the two other candidates are on similar $, I believe the choice is clearly Arnold. He has a proven pedigree at a local level. It then come down to Lowe v Arnold. Let's say Lowe will cost say, $200K pa. Arnold might be double that (I have no idea with coach remuneration, so please correct me) at $400K. For that sort of saving Sage will choose Lowe every time. The only thing money is spent on at this club are expensive toys like marquees, paid for by sponsors and the FFA. I just hope a sponsor does the same thing for the coaching role. Might end up with Graeme Kurv Western QBE Europcar Arnold.

The problem I have with this is that I'd be *very* disappointed if the 2 candidates that aren't Lowe, if they have equivalent salary demands to Arnold, weren't superior to Arnold. Yes Arnold is proven whereas the foreigners are unknown... but after 3 months of assessing candidates, the club *should* have a better idea about what they're getting from them than they do about Arnold. As you say... the fact that the cheap option is likely to end up being the preferred option is the biggest worry of all because we'll end up with Lowe, but at the same time I'd be highly worried that a 3 month process utilising external recruiting consultants and assessing 40+ applicants from around the world couldn't put a name forward that they were confident enough in to overrule the late-entrant Arnold who apart from being Guus Hiddink's assistant and having a couple of good years at CCM has a pretty disappointing track record and would command top dollar.
