The United thread was similar many years ago. So was the feeling/chatter around Hindmarsh.
I originally joined this forum to vent about Vidmar in his last season in charge then we went through the Coolen fiasco and people hating that our owners were Aussie Rules people etc

It's been a long time since either of our teams won anything let's be honest. End of NSL for you guys and first premiers plate of A-League for us.

When you've supported the club for as long as a lot of us have, its impossible to have not become jaded.

There's your confusion.

I love Glory and want the best for it.

Apart from the players putting their best out on the pitch, I'm pretty much jaded with everything else behind the scenes.

Oh, and the away strip looks fine.

So that's two things I like.

You've also made the final of the Asian Champions League and appeared in the Club World Cup since then.
Glory are the only A-League foundation club to have never qualified for the ACL.

And in your opinion do you think the club has progressed forwards in that time, or would you agree that most A-league clubs have overtaken us both on and off the field?

the club stood stll between NSL and A-League, Nick Tana didn't invest as all the other clubs started at a far higher level.

W didn't recover from that and Nick walked away handing back his licence.

FFA control took us further backwards.

Been a long slow progress but after last year Ali Edward disasterous spell in charge we now have a Squad that should be looking at top 4.

Yeah, and 2 HAL GFs compared to your one. Still, they only leave a sour taste as much as anything

Didn't you guys get shafted the year you made the GF by Australia getting a reduced number of ACL spots that year or something too? I seem to recall something along those lines...

Nick walked away at the end of the 05/06 season, when McMahon was sacked in Dec 05 and his assistant Vest appointed. 9 seasons ago.

FFA control was in 2006/07, so that's something that happened 8 seasons ago. Sage was quite happy to keep Smith on as coach and that went pear shape by November 07, appointing Mitchell, his assistant and then appointed him as head coach.

So that's two seasons that Glory should be behind, but it feels a lot more.

In the 3 of the past 4 Glory seasons the incumbent coach has been sacked and replaced by his deputy (except for Lowe) who was then appointed as head coach by Sage. These sackings have occurred in Oct 10 (Mitchell out/Ferguson in), Feb 13 (Ferguson out/Edwards In) and Dec 13 (Edwards out/Lowe in).

The average finish for Glory in the 9 A-League seasons has been 5th/6th, with 4 second last places, one GF appearance and 3 finals appearances. In the past 3 seasons Glory has finished 2nd/3rd (GF year), 6th (made finals) and then 8th.

That is slow progress, but not in the direction you were thinking.

Glory have had squads in previous years that should have made the top 4, but never happened. The only aberration, is 11/12 when they finished 3rd, with a so-so squad, built on a lot of heavy work and luck.

So, going by all that, I expect another turbulent year. I think Lowe will be gone come Christmas with infighting and squad disharmony with Burns/McGarry waiting in the wings. They'll probably end up finishing 7th/8th after getting their shit together after it's too late to matter. Burns to be appointed coach for 2015/16.

I do so hope I'm proven wrong. I would like for once Lowe to know what he's doing and the players to be happy with what Lowe is doing.

Just not feeling it now. Time and results will tell.

Sage only took full control 5 years ago before that he was Spence, McEwan and Sage.

of those 5 years we reached 3 finals and 1 grand final after never reaching the A-league finals.

Glory have only sacked 2 coaches, Smith and Ferguson. McMahon left by mutual consent, Mitchell moved upstairs and Ali Edwards was suspended/stood down as head coach and then he resigned.

As I say we have been moving forward but took a huge hiccup with the Ali Edwards disasterious reign.

We have only once recruited well in the -League and that was Fergies first full season although this season is looking very promising.

I think Glory have learnt that stability is more important than giving in to fickle fans and Lowe wil be around for the full 2 years of is contract.

Semantics.

Edwards was effectively sacked. If he wasn't he'd still be in the job. Probably left on the quiet after being paid out.

Mitchell was replaced by Ferguson after a lean run of results and then given a mates job as TD by Glory. Effectively given the chop as coach but not having to pay out his contract.

If they weren't they still would have been in the job and they still had time on their contracts to run. In my book, that's getting the sack.

I hope Lowe is still around in the next two years ONLY if the results are there.

If not, kick him out and get a real coach if for a change.

Not semantics but facts. McMahon, Mitchell and Edwards were not sacked, I know that doesn't play into your narrative but that is the facts.

I agree that the origin of our problems was in fact Nick Tana who didn't prepare properly for the start of the A League, tried to do things on the cheap, made some very uninformed recruiting decisions and then panicked and brought in McMahon. This led to FFA ownership and years of struggle thereafter.

I am no fan of Sage's time as owner, but I do respect his passion and his financial commitment. Had the FFA kept running us we probably would have died.

The often discussed issues with Sage for me relate to the fact that he often wants to have his mates involved and doesn't carry through enough with his commitment and take steps to create a professionally run club. In recent years he has done more (with NPL set up etc...), but the problems of him hiring mates and yes-men and cutting costs in the wrong areas (ie coach) persist.

Edwards was removed as head coach after he spoke to the press after being told not to. Edwards then gave the board an ultimatum 'it's me or Burns' Glory said bye bye , he had a chance to stay but refused it.

Mitchell stood down and went upstairs as was the plan already spoken about and McMahon left by mutual consent.

Can't be fucked with Sage's Glory anymore tbh. It's from one calamity to another. They never learn and keep repeating the same mistakes. Like an abusive relationship, you don't go back you just have to step away from it. Hiring Lowe after "world wide search" and appointing Burns into a new role was the final straw, it's too much.

Their lip service wont get me back on board, neither will results ("finals"), because like '11 getting to a GF didn't help the team in anyway the season after, the problems were still there.

And let's face it, there's already been plenty of fucks ups this pre-season.

Bring on the FFA again whilst looking for other investors. It's not 2009 anymore. Adelaide didn't die under their guidance, neither did WSW. May have to wait in the queue because of Newcastle though...

Adelaide had just reach the ACL final and WSW had federal govt and FFA player concessions to help them along.

FFA have also part owned clubs at other times too.

They all seem to be better off than Glory.

The only defining difference is the management of Glory.

Until they get that right Glory will just continue rattling along the bottom of the ladder.

Odds in this morning's Worst puts Glory at $12 with the Nix and Jets below them.

You talking about FFA control over Brisbane who were reigning champions at the time?

Hardly evidence that FFA have ability to instantly make a club successful unless they give us the same concessions that start up club WSW got or the $5m the Gillard govt chipped in.

Hardly evidence that FFA have ability to instantly make a club successful unless they give us the same concessions that start up club WSW got or the $5m the Gillard govt chipped in.

That's not my point.

FFA control is not such a bad thing.

All depends what comes after.

FFA have also part owned clubs at other times too.

They all seem to be better off than Glory.

The only defining difference is the management of Glory.

Until they get that right Glory will just continue rattling along the bottom of the ladder.

So what is the point of FFA control if they have no experience of turning a club into instant success?

5th, 7th, 7th, 7th, 5th, 10th, 3rd, 6th, 8th

Glory have only improved in 09/10 and 11/12.

All the other seasons they have gotten worse.

Edwards was not the only disaster.

Take out that 3rd place finish, the average placing for Glory has been 7th/8th.

Can't see the improving part anywhere.

3rd one season then sack the coach, that was wrong.

last season was a disaster from the start. Poor recruitment followed by terrible team selections and inexplicable subsititutions.
