Not totally against a name change, something simple though (do we need a 'mascot' in our official name?). The Glory element could be incorporated into the badge/logo of the club (or perhaps the Club's motto?) So therefore we may still refer to them as Glory but they officially aren't.
I would say the Club has bigger fish to fry at the moment though. They need to maintain their momentum and keep playing entertaining and winning football. They really need a big marketing push ... in a record round for crowds in the A-League, Perth for their first home game only managed a bit over 8,000. Improve/maintain their playing style, connect with the community and market for an audience are all issues that they need to focus on before any concerns with their "brand" comes into play.
Rarely does changing a "brand" offer any real benefits, and they would be better off focusing on their core business (playing football and engaging the large soccer community in Perth and surrounds). This will yield a lot more "appeal" and represent the people a lot better than simply re-branding the same package.

"The reason we push for this is the Perth public was never really given a chance for its say on the name. We believe there is a greater want for a more traditional, meaningful name and that this can help the public connect better with the club". Never seen any views expressed anywhere in the last 18 years that the name Perth Glory Football Club is any way preventing people from connecting with the club. The fact that you currently have a total of 8 likes for your page suggests that your claim that there is a "greater want for a more traditional, meaningful name" is something that you have made up out of thin air. I'm going to take a punt and guess that you weren't even born when the club was established nearly 20 years ago. Why don't you go down to the Elephant and Wheelbarrow and/or the kids zone at NIB on a match day and see what support there is for a name change? I predict zero.

For once, I agree. Totally stupid idea. The whole reason the name "Glory" was chosen as it was ethnically neutral. It wasn't City, United, Real, Sporting, FC, Athletic etc. All those have connections with other leagues/countries. No thanks. "Glory" has 18 years of history. If you want to disenfranchise at least half the hard-core membership and alienate half the Perth population, then sure, rename the club. People of Perth know who Glory are. But like I said before, wait another 5 or so years and you can go support the Fremantle Schooners with their cool name and snazzy salmon pink tops.

I am just going to enjoy the ride and hope that we get something out of the Adelaide game this weekend so that I can wear my 3nil "Top of the League" shirt to the next home game (against Newcastle who we always beat) for the first time without it being ironic. Currently have some quality players playing some quality football - what is there to complain about?

That FB page - this whole idea - must be a troll?! FTR the Glory, under the FFA's management, explored some 'radical' changes apparently, including the idea of a Black & Gold kit etc.. but they were turned down quick fast. We're not talking some of the other A-League clubs here, like few years old Heart/City, or even QLD/Bris Roar... This is 20 years of an institution, who's brand has seared into the culture/fabric of Perth. If people think the issue/s centre on the club's appearance, be it name, colour, badge etc... then they may be as misguided as what we've labelled Tony Sage, FFA and co at times! Nate wrote:soil wrote:Changing the name would be pointless but I'd be behind a crest change. Yeah, that I could get behind. Yeah and that's already happened a few times. It's inevitable the badge will 'evolve' again, soon enough.

The team finally off to a good start, with the most balanced, on-field team/success focussed squad we've had in some while. So in a way, no surprise! More 'primed' players rather than 'past their prime' players. Finally they're hinting at a strong effort for the top 4-ish places, let alone 'play-offs'. We'll ofcourse taper off, but the form this team hitting and confidence being built now, won't diminish too fast.
One of the biggest drawcards they say, is on-field success. Result + Performance. Hopefully the team this season providing that, so that's one of the lead ways to improve a club's lot, in the scheme of things. Glory have improved a little off the field too, with memberships etc... so no reason why they can't do better off it and I'm sure they will. The thing with Glory too and it's period of existence - Glory's sleeping giant is just it's own base or tapped market. The unique visitors that have attended Glory games in the past two decades - would be as numerous as even the biggest two A-League clubs. The amount of former Glory NSL and even earlier A-League punters who may be yet to re-engage, largely through results - those are the ones who may be waiting to engage and it's only through some sustained impact in this league, that we may finally see some of those come back in. Infact we're already seen a thousand or two of these folk, come back in - via the improved last couple seasons under Sage - crowd average pushing their A-League high, last season.
If we can do a 'Central Coast Mariners' let alone 'Brisbane Roar' - in terms of impact on the field, season-on-season, you can just imagine the positive impact that would have here!

In all this - one thing - can anybody explain the barely 9k crowd for the mid-Sunday arvo game, hosting Roar? Was surprised it was that low tbh, was expecting a crowd drawing a thousand or so more, atleast.
Again, some of that may be negative blow-back from the misery of last season? But once word of the early results and good word-of-mouth passes, hopefully things improve there too. This could be a team worth watching, as worth watching as any Glory team we've seen for seasons!

Edited by GloryPerth: 22/10/2014 06:55:53 PM agree with this and well said, it will take several years and one year after another of on field success, we can't make the grand final one year and then not back it up the following year. Unfortunatley Perth is a bandwagon market and will jump on along with success. On field success is everything and is what we need to get big crowds and to really rev up interest

Heard that the club is looking into basing themselves at Duncraig and redeveloping Percy Doyle Reserve into a proper base with proper training and administrative facilities. Good news if true

Oh yeah, the weather had cleared up somewhat, hadn't been as bad as preceding days, but was still on the cold, quite overcast, side. FTR I don't live in NW Perth, but was out and about in the East.
Early last season under Edwards we drew some good crowds, always above 10k, even when some of those games were similar times and pushing above 30 degrees (Which drew formal complaints from Glory)!
Last season: 13 Home Games, 9,418 average attendance, 122,431 total attendance
Granted, the attendances for the first two home games were exceptional (ADP's visit helped) and the overall attendance good, nearing a club record for the Glory in the A-League, till those couple two home fixtures in March, following confirmation of our being out of the running for the finals. Still, last season, first home game was same day and time, drew near 14k (Hosting Heart). And the December fixture hosting AU on Sunday arvo/evening drew well over 9k. Only other Sunday arvo game was that very low attendance late March, barely 6k drawing well below what Glory were drawing all season.
The next five home games, heading towards the New Year, are:
1 November 2014, Saturday 16:30 Hosting Newcastle Jets 15 November 2014, Saturday 18:45 AWST Hosting Western Sydney Wanderers 21 November 2014, Friday 18:45 AWST Hosting Wellington Phoenix 12 December 2014, Friday 18:45 AWST Hosting Newcastle Jets 20 December 2014, Saturday 18:45 AWST Hosting Central Coast Mariners
Not the biggest drawing clubs, arguably Roar the biggest from that bunch. Though hopefully WSW bring a few more travelling fans and indeed, our results are good enough to draw people in, regardless of opponent or weather. My bad - 'Distance Derby' on the Friday evening! :d :p Still can't believe we host the Jets twice within the couple months - yet no room for us to host a Victory, City or SFC during this period?! ](*,)
