Hand on heart? Serious? I can't stand our national anthem, apart from being rubbish, it represents nationalism which is something to be discouraged, not encouraged.

Being proud of who you are - be that your sexuality, race, nationality or whatever - is to be encouraged. Nationalism is different to pride.

Not at all. I'm proud to be kiwi. I'm never going to tell you that NZ should invade another country because it's the best on earth and we should spread the 'kiwi' way.

What smacks of nationalism about 'our' national anthem? In that sense, shouldn't you regard ALL national anthems as promoting nationalism?

There shouldn't be anything wrong with being proud of where you come from.

That's a personal thing. I'm proud of being Australian, and I wouldn't do it for any other nation.

Neither did they. It was something that came to prominence under the encouragement of President Eisenhower durin the cold war.

Personally, I think it's great watching the national anthems before the Socceroos games and hearing the crowd belt out Advance Australia Fair so loud and with such gusto & enthusiasm you can't hear the music/whomever is singing.

Same with how America is a "Christian nation". They have only been such since 1956, when Eisenhower made it the national motto, despite federal endorsement of a deity or religion being contrary to the constitution.

Of course it's unconstitutional, but when people are afraid in the heat of the Cold War, what else do you expect?

It's easier to remind people of the 'core values' in their lives. It's subliminal propaganda to keep the population in check. In hindsight, it's a genius move.

Our national anthem is pretty fucking weak, in all honesty.

My old French teacher used to be obsessed with their national anthem, she absolutely loved it. Thought it was just so passionate and strong.

Well it depends partially what the lyrics of the anthem are, but, essentially yes, i do. I only ever apreciate them as pieces of music, and frankly australia's anthem is rubbish.

I don't see how you can be proud of being from australia. Its not as though we are a people's that has pulled themselves together in a time of need for the good of their fellow man/woman. Its being proud of something you have no control over, you should be proud of what you have achieved, not where you were born.

I'm proud to being from a country where I can express my opinion on free discussion (unlike North Korea), I'm proud to be from a country where people are so desperate to get in that they're trying to get here illegally (unlike a list of countries as long as my arm), I'm proud to be from a country where I don't have to worry about being shot each time I go outside (Unlike America), I'm proud to be from a country where we we're actually willing to help out a neighbour (unlike england).
