Its being proud of something you have no control over, you should be proud of what you have achieved, not where you were born. I'm proud to being from a country where I can express my opinion on free discussion (unlike North Korea), I'm proud to be from a country where people are so desperate to get in that they're trying to get here illegally (unlike a list of countries as long as my arm), I'm proud to be from a country where I don't have to worry about being shot each time I go outside (Unlike America), I'm proud to be from a country where we we're actually willing to help out a neighbour (unlike england). If you went to another country and helped to build a society like that from a hellish one, then you would have every right to be proud of what had been achieved on a national level. But i do not prescribe to being proud of being born into a well off society.

Why, because you live a privildged life, don't have to worry about where the next meal comes from, have a good peaceful society thats never known the chaos of civil war, unrest, genocide etc, you can receive a good education and live a long life with your family? Yeah I agree nothing to be proud of there at all, Australia sucks. I don't prescribe to this theory of not being proud of being born into a secure society, are we supposed to feel guilty that we can put food on the table and afford to live good lives? I am proud to be Australian, I have pride that our nation is continually judged one of the top nations to live in in terms of lifestyle, education, health system, economy etc. I'm proud of having access to quality education, being able to afford the cost of living, I'm proud of living in a society where I don't have to fear for my safety, I'm proud to live in a country not ravaged by war or poverty and I'm proud to live in a country with a stable political system. Australia is a great country, which ever way you look at it there are many reasons to feel pride and be thankful you were lucky enough to live in such a society when you see the living conditions of other nations

Im bloody thrilled, but i am not proud because i have not helped to build that, if i had, then maybe i could be proud. There's a difference between gratitude and pride.

You've never lived outside of Australia, have you? And you don't contribute anything to your community or society, do you? You say we shouldn't be proud of living here because you don't contribute anything. #-o

That if you as an individual have worked with others to build someting then go for being proud. But if you have worked tirlessly with others to further your country, firslty, id say thats crap and that you've been working to advance yourselves, and if you have been working specificly 'for your country' when others are in much more need of help (ie. less developed nations), then that's a very minimalistic and nationalistic approach.

So your argument is that I shouldn't be proud of being from Australia because I haven't contributed in founding what makes this country 'great'. So the only people who can be proud of being 'australian' are people who were around in 1901.
You're also saying that I don't contribute enough to the community, be if volunteer work or just ensuring that people have the best time possible on a night out so I can't be proud of this country, and what I see people doing around the place.
If I wasn't proud of the standing that this country has and being a part of that, then what right would I have to get angry when a politican like Gillard does something stupid to fuck it up?
You haven't even lived in another country, and you're sticking the boot into me because I've chosen to live here and I'm proud of that? Once again you've reminded us that you're just a silly little child with not enough world experience to support his 'views'. You're a political version of nhub.

What, so you are supposed to be proud of choosing the best environment to live in? Since when is making a sensible decision about personal comfort something to be proud of? Furthermore, are you also seriously trying to argue that what you do for are a living is because you 'care about society' and not for your own personal gain, (which i have nothing against). On the point of polititians, you can feel annoyed about polititians screwing things up, but not because of nationalism, because people are getting hurt because of these decisions, which is why you'd have just as much right to be annoyed at polititians of other countries.

No, I'm proud because I contributed something to the community hear and made it worthwhile staying. What I do for a living I can do anywhere, making it a unique environment that people can feel safe and have a good time in, is something to be proud of. And having the facilities to do that becuase of this country and the people I work with is something to be proud of. You don't get it. Because you're a child who has never seen the outside of your front door. Take your marxist propaganda elsewhere.

MvFCArsenal16.8 wrote:whats wrong with being a marxist???? and no im not one im one of the most materialistic bastards out there:lol: Nothing at all, it just explains a lot about his last few posts. I have studied Marxism and find the concepts of it thrilling to study but I hate the idea of it in practice. I do find it interesting that someone most likely from middle class upbringing? With good education living in a privilidged society to be talking pro Marxism. I believe catberg is a reasonably young poster (mid teens)? So I can only assume he doesn't work either which leads me to question why he has such strong pro Marxist/Leninist views on the proletariat. I go to Uni with so many pro communism 'all power to the proletarian' left wing lunatics, I swear half of them preach it just to be indie. I just find the hypocrisy of the majority of these pro communist preachers laughable when they don't understand anything about the proletariat and are more a part of the pretentious inteligentsia class. Similarly they are attending the university that claims to be the best in the country which leads one to suggest they are well and truly benefiting from an affluent capitalistic lifestyle with quality education, a fair portion hailing from wealthy private schools. They talk of Marxism, Leninism, Trotskyism etc and demand power to the proletariat class they do not represent. I've been to a few of their gatherings for shits and gigs because I'm a fan of the history involved with the ideals and the history of revolution, the pro communist sympathizers are mostly pretentious uni kids trying to be alternative by preaching ideals in direct juxtaposition to their own lifestyle, its pathetic

There should be an official Apatheist Political Party. Slightly purpose defeating but who cares
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

So I can only assume he doesn't work either which leads me to question why he has such strong pro Marxist/Leninist views on the proletariat. i don't consider myself to be a marxist, i like his ideas and what they could achieve, but he screwed up, he needed to include a proper model for communism in his writings, rather than just 'rise up against the upper classes and so on' In general i do not have extremely pro communist views, im trying to balance as much pro capitalist material as pro socialist, but nationalism is something completely different. They had nationalism running rampant at times in the USSR, i dislike it as much as in any other country, under any other system. I also have worked for a considerable time (for my lifetime anyway), but i dont believe that communism and anti nationalism go hand in hand. One could just as easily be an ultra capitalist and also be anti nationalist, in terms of supporting globalisation is seems to make resonable sense. I see the irony when i buy a waving chairman Mao watch or a shirt with a hammer and sickle on it, i dont go to these meetings and shout 'power to the people' or whatever, its just for a joke really, and it has been for a long time. Many of the notions i support are in no way communist, and a leaning much more on capitalist some of the time. Edited by catbert: 28/8/2011 12:58:41 PM

WFMB: Had such an awesome day today :D At about midday, me, my dad and my sister decided we'd drive up to Palmerston North to watch the Chatham Cup final, just cause we felt like it, even though we had no connection to either of the teams playing in it. It was an amazing game, totally stoked that Wairarapa United won as the total underdogs (and the team geographically closer to where we live) plus they had a couple of pretty hot guys in the team 8-[ . Had these absolutely delicious kebabs for dinner, and then pretty much just went home. Hooray for spontaneousity and Wairarapa United! \:d/
