Not entirely sure why but I have a lot more respect for guys who do the whole 'asking permission' thing.

Unsurprisingly (look, it's Scoll with his buzzkill views on equality :P) I have problems with it. It suggests the fiancee is a possession to be given rather than an autonomous human being who is capable of making their own life choices. I believe you should always let close family know before making a big announcement, but they should have no say in who their daughter/sister chooses to marry. I understand it is important to some people though.

On the other hand you could say that it acknowledges that although being "their" girlfriend, she isn't a possession and the guy is asking permission to become a member of their family.

Nah that doesn't hold, since you don't tell your partner they are marrying you. The problematic part is asking permission from a paternal source to marry a woman. There is no issue in asking a person if they want to marry you. "We have decided we want to spend our lives together and we would love it if you welcomed us into your family" is exactly the same without the possessive nature.

Again, I understand the tradition and cultural importance! I am just offering an outside view on how it surreptitiously reinforces inequality. I've been in enough debates (if you can call them that, haha) on sexism on these forums to know that no-one is going to magically sprout empathy for the feminist point of view :P

WFMB: Realising how extremely lucky i have been in life, i have a family that love me and are supportive, i have friends that i can trust with anything, I have so far extremely excellent health and i was born in Australia (Ranked second-best country in the world to be born in) and have had nothing overly traumatic happen in my life (yet).

Farkin hell i'm only sixteen years old and anything can happen, but i feel both humbled and privileged to have such a good future and life ahead of me, something that so many people in this world have never had.

100% agree with you Scoll. Women aren't possessions. I told my prospective father-in-law I was asking his daughter to marry me but out of respect for her I certainly didn't ask him for his permission.

I realise it's tradition but you're meant to wear a suit at a wedding too and I didn't do that either.

I asked my father-in-law back when I got engaged. It was genuinely more nerve-racking than asking her to marry me. I'm really glad I did though - him & I bonded a lot that night, he even broke down in tears during the 2-3 hours we spent together just chatting about it all. And the mrs, after she calmed down after I asked her, was insanely happy I asked him permission - it meant a bunch to her, because she knew her dad endorsed the move and was happy to let me into the family.

But I didn't feel like it was actually me asking permission, or him "handing over" his daughter - I saw it more as me letting my/our intentions known, getting a proper indication on how happy he was to let me into his family, and the actually Q&A was more of a traditional formality rather than genuinely getting permission.

I can't really imagine ever 'asking permission', its only ever really a man to woman thing, and seems to be a hang-up from the whole 'women are possessions' shit.
As far as I know its a thing for a woman to ask her husband's family permission to marry him.
