One can only dream of Juan, in the A-League, pardon the pun. :) BTW http://www.goal.com/en/news/60/south-america/2010/03/19/1839560/south-american-dispatch-juan-roman-riquelme-leaving-la-bombonera-In it he states he promised the former (now deceased) President of Boca, that he'd retire at the club. But he's only 31 going 32 at the moment, and considering this above article is very recent and Riquelme has recent made no definitive statements regarding his future beyond this season, then he could certainly be a fair target, for any ambitious A-League franchise (Like Sydney) to chase up for 1-2 more seasons. It would be a massive coup for the league, no doubt. But thing is, IF he does decide to continue on, would he want to break that promise at leave his boyhood club, to finish his career abroad? AND IF he did opt to, would the appeal of playing on a marquee wage in Australia, outweigh the appeal of earning much more in leagues like the J-League, Uzbekistan (Bundyakor) or in the Middle East? Quote:Man when i look at Riquelme i look at a man who is simply to fat to play football, really he makes Carlos Hernandez look alot more fitter! haha, but he becoming Sydney FCs marguee man it would be another Mario Jardel in the making haha!!! sorry but its true!!! Carlos has clearly set the precedent that fitness (or lack thereof) is no boundary for a player's success provided they have the technical and creative ability to counteract and also the desire to succeed. Automatically comparing a hypothetical Riquelme move to the A-League to that of Jardel's is fairly ignorant as Jardel's problems stemmed way further than his weight. Jardel couldn't have given less effort during his time at Newcastle, hence his failure. Bringing this back to Riquelme, if he was to hypothetically join an A-League team, unless he actually had geniune care for the role he was to undertake, there's always other fish in the sea. It would be great to see him in the A-League though.

I didnt say hes a bad player, hes obviously very talented but...hes lack i should say "fitness" has probably jepardised a great career in Europe! its quite a shame really :( Riquelme is the single reason Argentina struggled to make the WC. He is an unbelievable player and his fitness has nothing to do with it. Like Fredsta said he would rip any A-League defence to shreds. His career or lack thereof in Europe is his choice. He wanted to go back and play in South America, and he is still good enough for the Argentina squad. If he wanted to play in Europe he could because he is just that good.

Edited by Barca4Life: 1/4/2010 10:48:42 PM Riquelme is one of the greatest play makers in the game, period. He would tear Aeague defences to shreds, he has the vision to open any defence, the passing ability to bring team mates inot play and the ability to score from any range including set pieces. Riquelme would destroy this league but of course he will never get the chance as this is a BS April fools scenario

La Paglia is also poised to sell his stake in Sydney FC to David Beckham, and Frank Lowy has announced plans to build a bronze scupture of Steve Corica to join the league and union greats in the SFS forecourt.

Rumour on the twittersphere is that Sydney FC is looking to sign Riquelme from Boca as their marquee No 10. Tops if true.
