On the 'football hooliganism' scale I give sunday's incident a 1/10. No need to label it 'ethnic violence blah blah' just your typical organic low grade act of stupidity seen whenever MV plays Adelaide or Sydney...... A few clowns run onto the pitch to celebrate after a undeserved 91st min equaliser against the arch enemy Heidelberg at our last ever match at the old BJS, one fool gives their keeper some lip and cops a backhander, gets up and walks away with hands in the air .....It was more comedy than hard core violence. Shit like this shouldn't happen and can't be excused I realise, but every club in every league in every country has a few idiots that fuck it up for everyone.
Small scale celebratory pitch invasions are pretty common in the lower leagues, it's wrong but it happens and it's usually a case of immature teenage over exhuberance.

I feel sorry for the board and volunteers (all unpaid) at South who are doing a top job in strengthening the clubs future having to deal with this type of stupidity.

I make no excuses for sunday's incident. We'll simply have to cop it on the chin.

The 'fan' concerned has made full admission to the club and FFV. And no it wasn't me!!!!Too old for that sort of shit nowdays....

he wasnt assaulted and nobody attempted to assault him! the person mocked the keeper and the keeper retiliated by shoving him to the turf, 30 seconds later everyone was off the pitch, no kicks, punches, slaps and other rubbish that ppl have made up who werent even at the game.

I'm not a hater of South Melb, in fact i have been quietly impressed with how they seem to go about their business, but the reality is this type of behaviour can't be condoned or minimised. The reality is idiots entered the field, an incident occurred with the goalkeeper and the match was stopped.

This was no doubt by a few idiots who I'm sure don't represent the club or the majority of supporters...Unfortunately for the game this reinforces every fear, misconception, fact or untrue about 'ethnic' clubs....it is always a few idiots who ruin things for everyone else.

Absolutely, every club has dickhead fans, and the actions of the few, whilst they obviously don't reflect the views of the club or the majority , they do tarnish all.

If this happened at MV I would condemn it as I would if it happened at any A-League club. I guess what we all need to understand is that these idiots are not people we want supporting our clubs...and if this type of behaviour is endemic to the State League in Victoria as some have suggested...it needs to be eradicated post haste.

The biggest problem that I see is that public consensus and discussion is now evolving towards the implementation of a second tier and a Cup comp. These types of incidents reinforce every ugly stereotype Football in Australia has had to endure.

As a sport we need to stop undermining ourselves to move forward. My biggest concern in reading some of the comments is that whist some have been over the top, each way, not all have been in condemnation of the incident.

i have condemned the incident from the moment it happened on sunday, i think everyone has, but i think the discussion needs a balance, as angry as i am at our fans, im sick of other ppl who most likely werent even at the game trying to make it out to be the biggest scandal ever, a bit of balance wouldnt go astray.

One hell of an own goal scored.
Security was non existent and unable to cope with any incident.
Shambles and disarray mixed with dismay.

Tip rat victory fans who weren't even at the game ready to stick the boot in at any chance. 10, 15 fans ran onto the pitch? 1 teased the keeper from a meter away, only to be confronted by the keeper, pushed over as he was backing away and kicked by a few heidelberg players. laser light was from a crazy heidelberg fan. Match is not officially abondoned as result still stands, ref blew for full time. investigation is under way.

The fans of some of these old clubs remind me of Chopper Reid the way they snap and can't control their emotions. 99 times out of 100 these 3 fans wouldn't even consider acting the way they did but every now and again they do just snap and embarrass everyone who supports football in this country. Even though this a minority there is still hundreds of fans at these clubs that could at some point just snap, be overcome with emotion and do something crazy.

What will happen if you came into the A-league and all the hardcore people who don't currently attend come to the games, it would be a ticking timebomb. Sorry Jimmy your going to have to settle for the state leagues

I for one categorically deny making any derogatory remarks about the ethnic influences in Football in my original post.Please read it carefully. All I said and I was right there is much reactionary angst in sections of the culture of SMFC concerning rejection. The club is now struggling and is less and less relevant given the growth of other very well organised greek sponsored clubs in Melbourne who cause no trouble and have grown there own fan bases. SMFC administration is totally to blame in this case for having insufficient security at its games and must pay the penalty for this and remarks about crowds at Victory games are completely irrelevant once again reinforcing the view how much many SMFC fans hate the A-League. The reactionary behaviour of some SMFC fans just reinforce the predjudices the broader community has against this club and a section of its sometimes violent fans. I believe and it is only my opinion that it is highly unlikely that SMFC in its current form will ever grace the stage of elite level football in Australia again.

Let me start by saying I have always been and still continue to be a believe that in the long term South Melbourne in the A-league would be good for football.

However there is no doubt that the club still struggles to overcome the past. Incidents like this, while not ruinous by themselves, do expose the issues of introducing clubs that once represented the NSL back into out National Comp.

I find it amazing to see comments if not justifying the action seeking to downplay their seriousness. The fact is incidents like this just reinforce the perception that an Australian Cup style completion that mixes A-league with State league clubs is a recipe for disaster. Think how the media would react to this in a televised Victory vs South match.

It seems that sections of the SMFC fans will continue to do the club no favours and sadly that means the game continues to be held back.
