Germany's Cup blow

04/05/2010 9:22 PM
PA Sport and Sportal

Germany has suffered a double blow just days before revealing its preliminary World Cup squad as goalkeeper Rene Adler and midfielder Simon Rolfes were ruled out of the tournament in South Africa.

Germany takes on Australia in its first Group D clash on June 13, but will do so without the two Bayer Leverkusen players, Adler and Rolfes, who have succumbed to rib and knee injuries respectively.

I'm unfamiliar with the German side and the German league, so are these players starting 11 players? Or are they only substitutes?

Kevin Kuranyi has also been told that he won't going. He had a spat with Low over a year ago. Probably the German striker in the best form.

Wasn't the keeper expected to not play anyway because his best friend and team mate committed suicide?

Adler would've been backed in as number one... Rolfes wasn't a first-teamer.

They still have a really good keeper, Manuel Neuer, being touted as a Van der sar replacent, he is young but has over 120 appearances in the Bundesliga for schalke, down to their third keeper and they still have this level of talent.

Adler was expected as no. 1. But Manuel Neuer isn't less talented than Adler. Most people think he will be the prospective first goalkeeper in our national team.
We have problems, perhaps in most part of our team, but the goalie position isn't one of them.

Adler isn't a big deal because they've got Neuer, Butt and Lehmann who are all capable of stepping in.

Since Low fucked off Frings, Rolfes being out is a big deal.

Kuranyi being out, again, not ideal but Kießling and Gomez can fill that void with ease and Muller will probably get the nod ahead of Klose.

At this point in time the german squad more or less picks itself.

Neuer, Butt, Lehmann

Mertesacker, Lahm, Jansen, Friedrich, Hinkel, Tacsi, Huth.

Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Kroos, Trochowski, Hitzelsperger, Khedira, Hunt/Marin

Gomez, Muller, Kießling, Podolski, Cacau.

Hunt and Marin are the only two that are really fighting for a spot. It's also a younger side than what we've been used to seeing. Not to mention the usual lack of with and depth down back.

The lack of depth means it's almost guaranteed to be a Neyer, Friedrich, Mertesacker, Hinkel, Lahm, Jansen, Hitzelsperger, Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Kießling, Gomez starting XI too.

Ozil, Kroos and Muller should make the attacking midfield for them very interesting though.

afroman,

Lehmann has retired from not only the national team, but football in general. He won't be at the WC.

Adler was going into the WC as Germany's number one, at this stage, until his injury. But people are right saying Manuel Neuer is a decent back-up to come in, but he's still young and unproven at this level. Even Adler has had his problems, ie. see the 1-0 friendly loss agst Argentina.

The Werder keeper Tim Wiese is the next in line after Neuer. Beyond that I'm not sure who they'll pick. Maybe Butt, is Hildebrand still in the blender? Are Weidenfeller or Rost a chance?

Last I'd heard he wanted a one year extension with Stuttgart. I guess things changed.

I don't think Wiese will get picked, he's another one that hasn't got along well with Low. But Hildebrand only has 7 caps in as many years. Wiese only has two himself...so that's an interesting one. I'm a fan of Wiese though.

Hadn't heard that about Lehmann, afroman. Anyway, he's def retired from the national team.

ANyway I'm a Werder fan and quite like Wiese, although he is prone to the odd brain-snap, but most keepers are. crazy lot. I thnk Hildebrand's star has faded since moving to Spain a few years back, but Im not totally sure if his time at Hoffenheim has revitalised his hopes. Dont thnk it has.

Still, we're talking bout germany's 2nd and 3rd choice keepers, so its prob not a big issue come WC time. Neuer will step in. We agree on that!

Yeah, did some research after you said taht and he's definitely out. I don't really like him anyway so I'm not complaining. "Jens Lehmann is the type of player who will start a fight with his own shadow, lose and demand his shadow be sent off."

Now that I think about it, Neuer and Wiese are the obvious first two choices. It's an even bigger shame now that Enke killed himself because he'd almost certainly have been called up now.
