A team full of players with little skill and a lot of effort will beat a team with a lot of skill and little effort.

It's almost impossible to beat a team like Brazil in the skills department, but Australia has always got by (In all sports) with pure grit and determination. One thing we have over other nations in sport is our mindset and outlook on life. I think it's best if we use this to our advantage and pick guys like Holman.

Even if Holman gives the ball right back to the opposition after he forces a turn over, the opposition will sure as heck lose their composure and sureness of themselves. Sport is a mind game just as much as it is a physical game. The ability of the Australian cricket team to get into the minds of their opponents is the reason they were so dominant for so many years.

Highly exaggerated opinion this. He is not our technically best player, but if you were right he wouldn't be playing first division in Holland. I think you need a sense of perspective and proportion.

The Eredivise is hardly a good barometer of talent. So many players excel in Holland and then fail when trying to go to the next level. It's not that great a league tbh.

holman and carle bring totally different things to the socceroos setup. while holman has played some shocking passes, and missed some fairly simple shots, pim reckons when it comes to work rate and movement off the ball he's up there with the best in the squad. he obviously isn't as flamboyant as carle, and doesn't tend to create something out of nothing in the way that carle can, but i think we can all agree that carle is a bit hit and miss in his own way. it just goes down to personal preference as to which attributes you value more highly.

even then, the only person who's personal preference REALLY matters is pim, and once that squad is picked, we should get behind ALL the boys 100%.

no, not just because he runs a lot. He has skill (8 years in Holland must mean he has some skill) and I think he is is in the best 15 or so players in the country at the moment. He also has some tactical nous, he gets into the right positions enough for people to notice him. Its not like he plays a game of football and goes unnoticed (for good and bad reasons) but that is better than someone like Carle who can go for lenghty periods of matches where you dont even know hes on the pitch.

I think he is more than mr. fitness and determination, but that is definitely his strength and some other people trying to get on the field might learn a thing from Brett about hard work off the ball.

Yeah Im a newbie in terms of registering for comments but I have been lurking on these forums for a long time. Its a good site for football news and I would check it every day. I only decided to sign up in anticipation for the world cup.

I have watched almost every WC qualifier and friendly (cant think of any I have missed) the 'roos have played since Germany '06, so have seen most matches Holman has played in for Australia so I probably know as much as you and base my opinion on the same footage you have seen.

Being an earlier registered member of this site doesnt make your opinion any more valid than mine.

I personally want to see Holman get a run at the World Cup and would like to see him start a match.

So what your getting at is since some people have not been a member of this forum as long as you, they know less about Australian football?

Holman would have to be the worst player to consistently get games for the socceroos. Why is his spot pretty much guaranteed! So much for earning your spot in the starting 11.

Yeh he fluffs a lot of chances but it's his of the ball stuff is what generates those chances. Put a slower or lazier player, or even one with less appreciation for space and those chances wouldn't have eventuated.

You spend a lot more time in a game of football without the ball than with it. Defensive pressure and off the ball stuff is more important than people who only watch on tv realise.

We have other players in the squad playing at lower levels than the Dutch league.

Just a thought guys, but in that more advanced midfield position wouldnt you rather a more creative player to actually create us chances?

Im not Holman bashing as i support all Aus players, but i dont see the need for a player to be consistantly in the side just to chase and hurry when we already play with 2 holding mids. Im not raising a Holman v Carle issue as im not sold on Carle either, but whoever plays in the 'Cahill position' should be there as a supporting striker not a supporting defensive mid.
