The bit I don't get with Holman is why is he picked at all in the position he's usually placed in? Yes he's quite possibly the most fit in the team, and his general workrate is commendable on the pitch. But what the bloody good is that when he's played in a position where he's either to be setting up strikers to score goals and or scoring them himself, something he rarely if ever does? We have two fantastic players in Culina and Grella who are our workhorses in the middle. They go missing plenty of times in the game but they are always doing something, yet they can make a pass and set things up, Culina moreso than Grella but that's beside the point. Holman is reasonable as a late replacement off the bench to help shut down a game when we're a goal up due to his athletic ability. Other than that he's useless to the team in my opinion. Remember you don't score goals by just running around harassing a player, and you can't win a game unless you score goals!

Holman > Viduka.

Holman ill be our biggest secret weapon at this World Cup. Kid reminds me of Emerton with a better pedigree.

Im not Holman bashing as i support all Aus players, but i dont see the need for a player to be consistantly in the side just to chase and hurry when we already play with 2 holding mids. Im not raising a Holman v Carle issue as im not sold on Carle either, but whoever plays in the 'Cahill position' should be there as a supporting striker not a supporting defensive mid.

We have other players in the squad playing at lower levels than the Dutch league.

Either that or their not just ball watchers who only watch football on TV.

Yeh he fluffs a lot of chances but it's his of the ball stuff is what generates those chances. Put a slower or lazier player, or even one with less appreciation for space and those chances wouldn't have eventuated.

You spend a lot more time in a game of football without the ball than with it. Defensive pressure and off the ball stuff is more important than people who only watch on tv realise.

If you are going to throw around big words can you at least spell them correctly.

Holman would have to be the worst player to consistently get games for the socceroos. Why is his spot pretty much guaranteed! So much for earning your spot in the starting 11.

Yeah Im a newbie in terms of registering for comments but I have been lurking on these forums for a long time. Its a good site for football news and I would check it every day. I only decided to sign up in anticipation for the world cup.

I have watched almost every WC qualifier and friendly (cant think of any I have missed) the 'roos have played since Germany '06, so have seen most matches Holman has played in for Australia so I probably know as much as you and base my opinion on the same footage you have seen.

Being an earlier registered member of this site doesnt make your opinion any more valid than mine.

I personally want to see Holman get a run at the World Cup and would like to see him start a match.

no, not just because he runs a lot. He has skill (8 years in Holland must mean he has some skill) and I think he is is in the best 15 or so players in the country at the moment. He also has some tactical nous, he gets into the right positions enough for people to notice him. Its not like he plays a game of football and goes unnoticed (for good and bad reasons) but that is better than someone like Carle who can go for lenghty periods of matches where you dont even know hes on the pitch.

I think he is more than mr. fitness and determination, but that is definitely his strength and some other people trying to get on the field might learn a thing from Brett about hard work off the ball.

holman and carle bring totally different things to the socceroos setup. while holman has played some shocking passes, and missed some fairly simple shots, pim reckons when it comes to work rate and movement off the ball he's up there with the best in the squad. he obviously isn't as flamboyant as carle, and doesn't tend to create something out of nothing in the way that carle can, but i think we can all agree that carle is a bit hit and miss in his own way. it just goes down to personal preference as to which attributes you value more highly.

even then, the only person who's personal preference REALLY matters is pim, and once that squad is picked, we should get behind ALL the boys 100%.

Alfonso Alves played first division in Holland and scored a bucketload of goals doesn't mean he isn't shit.

The Eredivise is hardly a good barometer of talent. So many players excel in Holland and then fail when trying to go to the next level. It's not that great a league tbh.
