Overall a good, consistent, reassuring performance that satisfied most of my uncertainties. Neither brilliant nor dominating but your kidding yourself if you still expect that in games of this nature. or in any international football in this century. Dont watch the game at my pub if you want to preach about how you thought we were more attacking in 06 or i will yell at you to STFU. It was all about testing the team dynamics and structure and for the most part we did well.
postives: wilkshire was MOM, and seems to just get better. the whole team seemed to gel and improve (especially in attack) over the game, the fitness levels are certainly there. Moore had a solid game to put his doubters in check, biggest worry in defence was more from a lack of speed in the wide defenders I thought, and we were lucky not to get caught out a couple of times in the first half. grella and garcia did themselves no favours. kennedy was average but took a cool "strikers" goal that suggests theres actually more to him than that iconic noggin. distribution from the keeper and backs was below par, hope we tidy that up a bit.
To be honest, I only came on here to back in the Holman love-in because he was brilliant. 1st game where he's shown his potential - that is, take away a couple of silly errors and you realise he has the goods. consistency is the only issue, and a big one granted. But tonight he skinned more players (cold.) and linked up more quickly and more effectively (both dribbling and passing, to feet) than any of our mids. If you don't see it yet its your own loss. suck it. I think they definitely were improving towards the end of the game. Their touch seemed to be really getting better and they seemed to be lifting in confidence. I couldn't be more happy with the result. Not only will it give the Pim and Holman haters nightmares, but it is a huge confidence boost and good workout for the team ahead of the tournament. Plus, no injuries and my favourite player got the only goal of the match. It will do Kennedy's confidence a world of good in this tournament after that goal. People may perceive that goal as 'lucky,' but I think it took a great deal of effort by Kennedy, seeing as how his game is concentrated on headers. Lately, I'm very happy to see him score a few goals with his feet. Even though he had a terrible strike tonight where one shot sailed about one hundred metres over the goal, I was still pleased to see him having enough confidence in himself to have a go. The biggest positive I took out of tonight is how composed and calm the squad were. They really had a textbook win tonight. With Emerton and Kewell coming back into the side, we can only improve from here. Things are looking bright on the horizon for the socceroos. :) Carn the mighty socceroos! :D

It really wasn't 'textbook'. There was little drive out there, it was a glorified training session and the players looked more concedned about what was for dinner than what the result of the game would be.
Things had better lift to the next level like we know they can when we take on the USA.

The ball, altitude, beach pitch were great levellers. The Danes ran out of steam and ideas towards the end.
Methinks the third pigs building his team out of "bricks" saved the Aussie Bacon.
If we had been Italy or Greece, the team would have rated "boring", but we were solid, and handled the conditions better. Our defence wore down the opposition, which was just as excellent to watch as any well drilled team going about business.
Who ever miises the cut is going to be disappointed and deservedly so, we lost nothing when moore went off, I would cut him for sure.

That was the best I've seen Holman play. Still made a few bad choices, but overall not too shabby. Where has that been the last 2 years?

afromanGT wrote:Holman didn't play that well, Nico. His performance was acceptable in an australian side that was more interested in waht they were having for dinner. An acceptable performance but nothing more. I want to see how he does against the US. I hadn't brought up Holmans performance. :-k To me, he played the way he always does, just that people weren't exaggerating and pointing out every mistake he made.

Interesting: Holman was great! Moore looked much better. What`s going on?! It was a thing of beauty, wasn't it? Holman haters will cry themselves to sleep tonight, and I'm lovin' it. Feels a bit like the Socceroo's friendly ads on Foxsports. H...H...H... Ho... Holm... Jeez, this is hard... Holma... Nope, can't do it. Did play well though.

We won, the boys played okay, some of the fringe players impressed. The goal was a fluke but the build up was good stuff. The much maligned Holman added something when he came on. Yes, it was a glorified "training run" as such but when you put on your country's colors no game means nothing. The improvement was there from the NZ game and I think the boys will give us more in the USA game. We're all such hard markers on The Socceroos and Matildas sometimes. The boys have qualified for the biggest tournament in the sport. They've won games that, a few years back, we'd have been over the moon about success in. They keep winning. The Matildas have qualified for the World Cup and have become the first Oz team to lift a trophy in Asia. maybe it's time to give credit where credit is due?

Interesting to see Culina move out to the right/left flanks after half time with Bresc coming in the middle to dictate a bit more, variation on our stereotypical playing style- seemed to work alright.

Hey guys.
I thought Australia was going to come 4th in their group but am starting to beleive their chances now. Serbia were not great against us and Ghana were woeful against Netherlands this morning (losing 4-1). I now believe if Aussie is in top form you can make it through, if you did however I don't think you would go any further than the second round.

Ghana got pumped by Holland which is good for us. As long as we dont lose to USA we will hae some sort of form going in to the WC were as two of our opponents will seem to be struggling. Plus we have been in SA the longst so the climate shouldnt affect us.

Squad's announced tonight (or so I heard on the radio). Fluke goal, keeper should have come out and claimed it instead of letting Kennedy get a head to it on the 6 yard box.

Every time we play people come out and say how terrible it was and how lucky we where. But we also seem to win all the games. I couldn't watch this game so can't pass judgement but we did win against a strong European side. Can't be all bad.

This game really highlighted how much stronger are attack is when we have Chippers and Wilkshire running down the wings. Moore was a lot more convincing than the New Zealand game, I would've liked to see how he would have done against Bendtner but oh well. It seems that Holman is making the final step of evolving from donkey to human.

What's with all this "holman haters" talk? Hasn't he been judged on each of his performances, and now he has produced a good one he gets the praise it deserves? If anyone in the national team were to regularly trip over the ball or pass to the ballboys then they would get criticism. It just was Holman did that more often than others. Pim obviously knew he could do better and continued to show faith, where many others hadn't seen the evidence to support this view. I'm glad he is performing well coming into the cup as he was always going to be part of Pim's plan.

The midfield pairing of Grella and Culina hasn't worked in the last two games. Grella is a liability, and Culina should be at RB, swapping with Wilko in the middle (with Jedinak there as well). With Emerton on the right, Culina overlapping with his speed, thats a very quick right side to play on the counter. And Wilko is far more positive in the middle than Culina's sideways and backwards passes.

God another attack on the Socceroo's from stefcep, You would seriously have to be next to Heineken the biggest ignoramus on this thread. Your stupidity knows no bounds, your Ghana bum boys were thrashed by the Dutch and Serbia will possibly cop similar treatment from the Pols. All our opposition is on a hiding to nothing as are you ya fool we are not!!

2010 World Cup Final, Australia Vs Spain: The Aussies put in yet another substandard performance, in a worrying sign for the socceroos. Apart from winning 2-0, the Aussies were unconvincing and will need to conjure up some attacking flair if they are to be any chance of holding their world cup crown. Verbeek's reign will be remembered for an unrelenting focus on results, perhaps at the expense of the good of the game in this country.

OH Please....... lets face some unsavory truths here!!
1) It was a training(warm up)game 2) More pointedly, Where is the Australian cohesion in attack & midfield? We can not progress to the 2nd round on defense alone.... 3) Where is the Aussie imagination & combinations in midfield - we gave up the ball to often and to easily. 4) Where is our ATTACK.....? Agreeded credit due & deserved for the Aussie defense, but guys Im really concerned about the LACK of cohesion (ideas)in the attacking third. We are at the world cup now, it isn't the qualifiers anymore......
In my opinion (2 cents worth) Australia need a much improved midfield/attacking combination. No one can say (if they watched last nights game) that it was a convincing exhibition by the socceroo's - yes our defense performed well. But with only one more warm up before our German encounter, yes I am starting to get very concerned as a Socceroo supporter!
If we don't find an attacking combination by "Yesterday" I predict we are going to get mauled by the Germans!!!

Points of interest from my perspective:
- The pitch was fricken horrible. Looked nice as carpet but fell apart like wet newspaper. - The lack of intensity from both sides was clear, so i wouldn't read too much into this match. Still a good hit out. - Wilkshire is quality. - Moore might be getting old, but the quality is still there. - Vinnie wasn't brilliant but he did a job and deserves more credit than he's being given in this thread. - Edit (how could i forget!): Holman came on, and all of a sudden we started linking out of midfield into attack. This was pleasing to me. - Those horns were quite the annoyance. - We seemed to get exposed by pace on the flanks. - Our throw-ins... Was it just me or were we turning over posession nearly every time we had a throw-in??
Cheers.
