Yeah just can't do old school spaghetti westerns in a modern way, people don't have the attention span for movies like the dollars trilogy anymore.

Even when you throw in Sci-Fi elements to spruce it up ala Cowboys and Aliens it just doesn't work.

So you weren't a fan of the True Grit remake? or the Jesse James remake?

Actually yes! I had forgotten all about TG, will have to get that again.

As for JJ, no not really :(

But in saying that, how well received where these movies? (I can't remember at the time).

I loved TG, and thought it was as good a remake as you could get for a western. JJ was alright from memory, but I havent't watched it in a few years.

Part of the appeal of old Spaghetti Westerns was in the simplicity of them. In an era that's all about CG effects, action and explosions I think a lot of that appeal is now lost.

Saw the place beyond the pines last night, it's a bit meh. Got thst Aussie actor in there, Mendehlsen is his name.

Saw world war Z Sunday , for some reason thought it was going to be about an alien invasion, then realised it was about zombies. Its pretty much an American remake of 28 days later, theyve really done the zombie franchise to death haven't they.

Went to see Man of Steel today. Thought it was excellent, if not a bit long. I'm not a Superman/Comic-Book action hero fan, but I thought it was done really well. The flashback scenes weren't overdone or overly dramatic and they were popped in at the right times. Thought the acting was really good, perhaps with the exception of Christopher Maloni who played the U.S Army Colonel. I think Maloni is a great television actor, think his role in Law & Order: SVU is superb, but I think he fell short in this role, but he wasn't a main character as such, so it wasn't a big issue. Overall though, I thought it superb. I do agree with PB though about the iPad style finger zooming. I could cope with it, but it gave my GF motion sickness. But yeah, I'd definitely go see it again. Maybe one to pick up on DVD.

Last night was made to watch the latest 'modern adaptation fairytale', the 'Hansel & Grettel: Witch Hunters' fantasy film. I'm not into your comic-book action hero movies, and I'm even less into these fairytale cartoon movies, but this was pretty good, enjoyable even. Jeremy Renner plays the older Hansel. Quite a big fan of Jeremy Renner, the more movies I see him in the more I like him as an actor.

Its a pretty light hearted film, and I guess is enjoyable. The witches are fun, the characters are fun. Certainly not to be taken seriously. Some parts may frighten young children, but overall it was better than I expected.

Went out and bought Django Unchained the other day. Quentin Taratino, another great movie. Must admit, it's no Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, but I thought it was an good movie. Jamie Fox was excellent in his role as Django, and Samuel L. Jackson played his role well as Candy's butler, speaking of, Candy was played well by Leo DiCaprio. I thought the role, a bit snobbish, but arrogant, bit dickheadish suited him quite well. If you're offended easily, I can't see you liking this movie, especially if you're easily offended by the word 'Nigger'. Here's a fun drinking game, take a drink everytime the word Nigger comes up. You won't finish the movie. Guaranteed to be Paralytic by the 15th minute.

The movie has some classic Taratino humour in it too. The KKK scene in particular was quite amusing, and Christof Waltz' character is very amusing too. Taratino makes his usual cameo appearance, along with the bloke who was the serial killer in Wolf Creek. Took me by surprise to here both Taratino and the other guy speaking with broad Aussie accents, and throwing the word 'Maaaaaate' around. Overall I found it an extremely entertaining movie, and to be honest, a good love story.

Hans is without a doubt one of the best theatrical composers in history.

Look at the work he did for Dark Knight in the making of, absolutely jaw dropping (RE: the single chord on the cello for the Joker).

Brings characters and sequences of movies to life with the sound of music.

Saw Gatsby tonight, really enjoyed it. Think it was casted really well, and did really well to put a lot of the novel's underlying themes across, without removing the subtlty that the novel had. Really enjoy Baz Luhrmann's style as well, he was perfect for this.

Most interesting bit of film news I've heard for a long time - Charlie Kaufman, nutty writer of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, is adapting Kurt Vonnegut's awesomely strange Slaughterhouse Five - and the movie will hopefully be directed by Guilermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim).

If they do this right it could be the biggest mindf*ck of all time.

Curious to know what Aussies made of Tarantino's "aussie" accent, because as a Pom I thought it was a laughable attempt.

I lost my shit. At first I thought he was trying to put on some form of a Texas twang. Had to re-wind the scene a couple of times to make sure I was hearing correctly..

Taratino sounded half Texan. I wonder why he made those Miners 'Australian'. I know we're famous for mining, but I highly doubt there'd have been too many 'Aussies' over there mining at that time. Comic relief perhaps?

It was a laughable attempt, but isn't that the whole point when someone other than an Australian tries to put on an Australian accent?

My understanding was that he wanted to put John Jarrett in the film because he loves Wolf Creek - so he just jammed him in there and then (I assume) he wanted to show off his talent for accents. ;)

Agreed. Between him and John Williams they have produced some of the most awe-inspiring soundtracks. Honorable mentions go out to Howard Shore and John Powell (absolutely loved the soundtrack for 'How to Train Your Dragon' e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IBlQj2U5kU)

Saw Man of Steel the other day. Would give it 7/10. Not a horrible film, but I think the trailer lead me to believe it would be more focused on the story than the action. Felt the film was at its best when it went back to Clark's childhood and focused on that aspect of him. Kevin Costner was brilliant as his father. The final 45 minutes of solid action got a bit tiresome by the end, which is a shame. Took away a bit from the rest of the film. Still, would recommend it and its not a bad film, I just feel its not as good as I expected.

Pacific Rim has got very good early reviews, which has also surprised me.

Also, I'm pretty pumped for The Wolverine. I like the idea they're taking away the X-Men aspect and using mainly Japanese actors.

Having seen it, it's definitely enjoyable. It's got a bit more than the typical summer blockbuster, without over playing it. Was very hard to get the head around Hunman playing a different character to Jax. After it I was itching for the new season of SOA

I might go see it simply for the fact Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman (SoA) are in it.

I thought it was more like Power Rangers without the bright colours.
