To all those people saying that Ghana beating Germany is impossible. How many of you would have said Switzerland beating Spain would be impossible or for Brazil to struggle like they did against North Korea would be impossible.

It's a WC FFS anything can happen we should all know that from 2006. It's a funny old game football and I have a sneaking suspicion that Ghana can get a win(more blind faith tbh:lol: ).

All we can do is focus on beating Serbia because if we don't it doesn't matter what happens with Ghana and Germany.

One advantage Ghana has over Germany is that Germany played their opening two matches at sea level and Ghana will play all three group matches at altitude. This match will be at altitude so fingers crossed the Germans screw up.

That means Germany will be at 80 percent which is still better than Ghana but not thrashing quality. All seems a bit suss that Ghana have recieved two penalties, opposition players have been sent off in each game and they play all their games at altitude. Wouldn't it be easy to allow Ghana to start on zero points and everyone else minus 4. However, Ghana still would struggle to get into the second round.

Also pretty sane, but Pim went with the inverse v Ghana for Chippers, playing him LM and Carney LB. I thought it worked quite well, Carney was ragged by the end with the overlaps he was running. Chippers had a spark and was useful going forward.

While we are at it, Pim has given WC Final debuts to;

Valeri
Rukavytsa
Carney
Holman
Garcia

Rukavytsa or Kennedy? If we have 11 men on the park and can utilise our wingbacks - Kennedy. If we are locked into a midfield battle and Holman is behind - Rukavytsa.

Against Serbia I'd play Ruka because against Vidic Kennedy will be useless. The way to be Serbia is along the gound with pace and Ruka's pace will help drag Vidic out of position and give Cahill a chance to get forward.

World Cup Preview: Australia - Serbia

Group D will be decided on Wednesday evening.....
By Subhankar Mondal
Jun 22, 2010 12:30:00 PM

Kick-Off: Wednesday, June 23, 20:30 CET.
Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit.

Dim Hopes Of Qualifying

Not many expected Australia to progress to the second round of the World Cup from Group D and the Socceroos haven't done much to dispel those notions. Currently placed bottom of the group with a solitary point from two matches, Pim Verbeek's side need to win their final game against Serbia and hope that results elsewhere go their way.

A win for Ghana against Germany would assure Australia of second round progress should they defeat Serbia, as then the Socceroos will have four points while Germany and Serbia will be stuck on three. However, for a side that conceded four times against Germany in their opening game of the competition and failed to win their second match, a win is something that looks out of reach.

Furthermore, with key players suspended in key positions, Australia will have their work cut out. However, there is quality in the Australian side and with the return of Tim Cahill to the line-up due to suspension, there will be no dearth of enthusiasm in the Aussie camp.

Win And Go Through

Unlike Australia, Serbia have their fate in their own hands. Currently placed third in the group with three points from two matches, all that Radomir Antic's side need to do to book their place in the second round is to win against Australia on Wednesday evening.

A win for Serbia will take them to six points and see them through whatever the result may be between Ghana and Australia. A draw will still be enough to see the White Eagles qualify for the second round provided Germany lose. A defeat will certainly knock the Serbians out irrespective of the result in the other game.

However, Serbia should be confident of progressing to the last 16 as they have improved. They lost their opening game to Ghana but staged a marvellous display against Germany to defeat them 1-0. Indeed, that win must have certainly boosted their confidence and morale and Antic's side will now be confident of making it through to the knockout stages from Group D.

FORM GUIDE

Australia

June 19: Ghana 1-1 Australia (World Cup)

June 13: Germany 4-0 Australia (World Cup)

June 5: USA 3-1 Australia (Friendly)

June 1: Australia 1-0 Denmark (Friendly)

May 24: Australia 2-1 New Zealand (Friendly)

Serbia

June 18: Germany 0-1 Serbia (World Cup)

June 13: Serbia 0-1 Ghana (World Cup)

June 5: Serbia 4-3 Cameroon (Friendly)

June 2: Serbia 0-0 Poland (Friendly)

May 29: New Zealand 1-0 Serbia (Friendly)

TEAM NEWS

Both Craig Moore and Harry Kewell are suspended and Vince Grella is injured. However, Tim Cahill is available for the Wednesday evening match after sitting out the last game because of suspension. Michael Beauchamp is likely to replace Moore in central defence while Scott Chipperfield could slot in at left-back instead of David Carney.

Probable Line-up (4-5-1): Schwarzer, Wilkshire, Neill, Beauchamp, Chipperfield; Emerton, Culina, Holman, Valeri, Bresciano; Cahill

Serbia

Coach Radomir Antic has no suspension or injury worries ahead of the game against Australia. In fact, centre-back Aleksandar Lukovic will return from suspension and will replace Neven Subotic at the heart of the Serbia defence, although Subotic did have an excellent match against Ghana.

Probable Line-up (4-4-2): Stojkovic, Ivanovic, Vidic, Lukovic, Kolarov; Krasic, Kuzmanovic, Stankovic, Jovanovic; Zigic, Lazovic

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Lucas Neill (Australia)

The Socceroos centre-back was the best defender for Australia against Ghana in their last match as he made a number of blocks. Neill's experience and quality came into use against the Black Stars and, against a Serbian attack that can be potent, the Galatasaray defender will have to be on top of his game again. With Nicola Zigic hunting for a goal, Neill will be the one deployed to mark the giant striker out of the game.

Milos Krasic (Serbia)

The CSKA Moscow winger struggled in the Serbians' opening game of the World Cup but overshadowed every creative player on the pitch against Germany. Krasic was at the heart of every attacking move that Serbia crafted against the Germans and looked dangerous on the flanks. Australia, who shipped in four goals against Germany, will have to be wary of the 25-year-old.

PREDICTION

The Castrol World Cup match predictor gives Serbia a 43% chance of winning and Australia just 27%; the chances of a draw are put at 30%. Indeed, Serbia do have the upperhand in this fixture. However, Australia can be a tough, battling side and the Europeans shouldn't get complacent. Expect a closely contested game in which a single goal would be enough to settle the affairs.

Australia 0-1 Serbia

How about:

Wilks - Neil - Beach - Carney
----- Valeri - Culina -------
-- Emo --- Timmy --- Bresc --
--------- Chippers ----------

After all chippers does play as a striker

As subs we can bring on Holman, Ruka & Kennedy to change the way we play.

Interesting, I like having Chippers, Holman, Ruka, Kennedy and Cahill all capeable of playing up front as they are all such different players and by doing one switch eg. Ruka for Kennedy we can change tactics straight away. must make it hard to prepare for.

One player I havn't seen mentioned much this WC is Vidosic, I personaly rate him very high and would love to see him get a run. With Kewell out of contention we nee players on the field with a bit of creativity and I think Vidosic can provide that.

I too would like to see him play, but I am not sure how likely it is - of course he could come in for Cahill (as long as we have 11 men on the pitch).

Holman as a target man? Are you Pim in disguise?
Kennedy/Ruka were selected as our strikers, use them there.
Holman playing on the right wing, Kennedy middle, Chips left wing.
Bresc & Holman could swap occasionally, give some headaches to the defence.

edit - did I really leave out Emerton? what was I thinking. I guess that means we will have to play 3 at the back to fit him in somewhere.

this game is going to be won and lost on the wings. carney is going to have to have a blinder against krasic, and neill, valeri and culina are going to have so support him heavily.

im going with:

------------schwarzer-------------

-wilkshire-beauchamp-neill-carney-

-------------valeri---------------

-------------culina---------------

emerton------------------bresciano

-------------cahill---------------

-------------------rukavystya-----

subs: holman for culina, kennedy for ruka, and either vidosic for emerton or chippers for bresc depending on their fatigue / level of play.

Australia to go 2-0 up and then Schwarcher gets sent off after a Serbian dive/crumple to the ground after the faintest of feather touches when he tries to take a cross.

Timmay Cahill in running to the ref to protest will trip on a piece of turf and fall head first into the ref and also get red carded.

In trying to help him up Neill falls over and bumps into the ref to get another red card.

After the penalty is scored by Serbia Australia Jesus and Culina are sent off after colliding with each other studs up trying to tackle a Serbian player.

Australia then has to forfeit the game because the only have 6 players remaining.

For what it's worth here's my 2 cents on a line-up
It wont happen but I figure bresc in the middle rather than 2 holding mids would give us more potency seeing as we need goals
Then later in the game could move Chips alongside Kennedy keeping Cahill in behind and Bresc swaps to the left for Chips...
Wont happen

............Schwarzer..........
Wilkshire...Beuch...Neill.....Carney
..........Valeri.................
...............Bresciano......
Emmerton....................Chipperfield
..............Cahill.....
................Kennedy..........

Kennedy and Beauchamp in for Socceroos

23 June 2010-SBS

Towering striker Josh Kennedy will start for Australia in place of suspended Harry Kewell, while Michael Beauchamp will replace Craig Moore for the Socceroos' crucial final Group D match against Serbia in Nelspruit.

It is understood Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek will use Kennedy to give his side an attacking focal point while Beauchamp, who impressed during the 2010 World Cup warm-up matches, is the natural successor to Moore and will earn his 22nd cap with his debut World Cup appearance.

Elsewhere, Tim Cahill returns to the starting line-up at the expense of Brett Holman, who impressed against Ghana and netted the Socceroos' only goal of the tournament so far.

Meanwhile David Carney retains his position at left back, with Scott Chipperfield and Brett Holman understood to be used as attacking options in the second half.

Australia must beat Serbia and rely on the result going its way in the match between Germany and Ghana to progress to the second round, after a campaign beset by controversial refereeing decisions and rumours of discontent within the team.

Eapected Australia team to play Serbia:

Goalkeeper: Mark Schwarzer Defenders: Luke Wilkshire, Lucas Neill, Michael Beauchamp, David Carney Midfielders: Carl Valeri, Jason Culina, Brett Emerton, Tim Cahill, Mark Bresciano Forwards: Josh Kennedy.

Except for the absence of Kewell(for Kennedy) this is probably our best side.

Agreed. I sad the same earlier in the thread.

Got the hat, where's the rabbit?

All we need now is a three nil win to us and a two nil win to Germany.
