This is a prime example of where FIFA needs to use video technology. The game was already stopped, none of the officials saw what happened as they were watching where the ball was, so the ref entirely bases his call on the academy award performance from the guy lying on the ground. A quick look at the reply would have seen the yellow card go to the other player for faking an incident in an attempt to get his opponent sent off! At the very least FIFA need to be able to review this after the game, realise that it never should have been a red card and cancel any suspension. The idea that there can be no recourse for when a player successfully fools a referee is just unforgivable. Kaka is standing there watching the ball and this guy blatantly runs straight at him, runs into him and falls down clutching his face (with which there was never any contact of any sort anyway). With a review system in place, Kaka should be freed up to play the next game and the Ivorian player suspended for his dispicable act! What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Red Card Drama Spoils Brazil Rout? KAKA was controversially sent off as a brace from Luis Fabiano and an Elano strike helped Brazil ease to a 3-1 victory in their battle with Ivory Coast at Soccer City.Have your say.

Disgraceful by Keita. "Bringing the game into disrepute" has never been more appropriate.

There was some Karma here for Brasil considering they got away with a double handball on Fabiano's goal: http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2010/well-now-its-getting-exciting-luis-fabianos-double-handball.htmlHardly fair to Kaka, however... funkybluesman wrote:

Even if FIFA don't want to use video refereeing, there should certainly be post-match penalties for blatant diving. Edited by GazGoldCoast: 21/6/2010 09:45:53 AM

2/10 ref rating analysis of the game from http://referees.worldcupblog.org/news/sundays-referees-reviewed-2.html Quote:Brazil 3-1 Côte d’Ivoire
Referee: Stephane Lannoy (France) Yellow cards: 4 – Kaka (Brazil) Tiene, Tiote, Keita (Côte d’Ivoire) Red cards: 1 – Kaka (Brazil, second booking)
Eight years ago, Ronaldinho received a red card in his countries quarter-final win over England. That was the last time the Seleção received a sending off at the World Cup until tonight.
The ironic aspect to Kaka’s marching orders was that Côte d’Ivoire should have probably been reduced to nine men by the time the Brazillian playmaker was sent from the field. Kader Keita got only a yellow for a terrible tackle on Felipe Melo, catching his shin with the bottom of his boot.
But at least Keita was carded – when Cheik Tiote lunged in studs and all on goalscorer Elano, injuring the Galatasaray midfielder, he didn’t even get a caution. He later received a yellow for a sloppy challenge on Luis Fabiano but it was too little too late.
Admittedly Kaka’s first booking was probably deserved when he jostled unfairly with Yaya Toure, somewhat needlessly. But his second was a joke. As Keita and Kaka waited off-the-ball during play, they slightly collided and Kaka’s arm moved against Keita’s chest (below). Keita collapsed on the floor holding his face.
Lannoy, who replays show was not watching this, then stopped play as we saw our first on-pitch brawl of the finals. In fairness, Lannoy could do little to stop the brawl himself and it is impossible for referee to have his eyes everywhere but some of those involved in the scuffle probably deserved bookings.
However, despite not viewing the incident and perhaps based on the strong reaction from the Elephants, gave Kaka his second yellow. Detractors may say that he’ll miss a dead rubber for Canarinho as they’re already through. But their game with Portugal will decide the group winner and the official has referee within the game, not in the light of the next one.
I mentioned in my preview that maybe Lannoy was there as the token French official brought along by FIFA. After tonight, it certainly doesn’t look like he was selected for his officiating skills.
Refs rating: 2/10
Even the ref in the NZ-Italy game got 3/10!!!

That was a massive dive by the Ivorian guy. Disgraceful by him and the ref.

Fabiano and Keita should both be in the dock for fooling the referee and bringing the game into disrepute. Replays showed him talking to the referee and being asked whether it his the top of his arm. He clearly tells the ref no and the referees says "oh ok then the chest." If this isn't a clear example of decieving the referee I don't know what is. I'd say it's worse than the Henry handball because he was asked if he handballed it and said no.
But then Brazil are everyone's darlings so nothing will happen.
Then what Keita's done is a disgrance too. He;s clearly looking for it. Almost as bad as the Rivaldo thing in 2002.

haha reminded me of the rivaldo incident.
The world cup is suppose to showcase the beautiful game this is football but these refereeing decisions, handballs and sending offs could really put off even the purest football fan from watching.
pathetic.

The refereeing at this tournament has been a complete joke so it's not much of a surprise... What'll happen next do you reckon?? Maybe one of them will accidentally write the wrong score down and then not be able to change it because it happened during the game and they won't have to answer to anyone about it.

oh and double handball for fabiano and he still told the ref he didnt do it... It didn't help that so many Ivorians were going in studs up into tackles. It was quite clear they were just trying to foul their way through the match as damage limitation. As for Fabiano's handball. Yes it was a handball but you can't blame the ref for not seeing it and I;m not going to blame Fabiano for not telling the ref he handballs it, he's a professional FFS as if he's going to deny himself a brilliant goal like that in a World Cup of all places.

The second one is impossible for any referee to call because it was on the other side of Fabiano the side he couldn't see and would have looked like it came off his chest. Yeah it looked so obvious on replay but no one would have thought it in real time.

FIFA need to bring in a post game video review of each match in the World Cup. Players who escaped detection or punishment from the ref but are found to have engaged in violent play or cheating should be suspended for the next game or more ( depending on the deed ). This should lift the standard of refereeing because there will be fewer attempts to con the referee if players know they will be suspended for it. The sooner the better.
