Did any of the English based lads play for us or did they just play the friendly games.

Was there any reason for that? Were they only allowed to nominate a certain size Squad for the tournament, so they just went with the boys that made the trip or were the English based lads no better than what we have.

Im not sure exactly what the reason was. But I believe that the AIS has to justify its program and to do that they must pick the players in the current program. Although there were only 3 UK based players that were looked at as I said, 2 GK and an outfield player. It is possible though that the UK based players will be selected for the U/17 World Cup if the boys from the AIS can qualify through coming top 4 in the Asian U/16 championships.

If they do qualify then the AIS will still have that same problem, using the English based boys won't sit very well with alot of people if AIS lads are benched to make room for the English. Is the AIS a user pays system or are the boys on scholarships similar to the English Academy setup. Don't suppose you know how many lads there are in England and other countries that would qualify for our U17's. I wouldn't envy the person who was given the job of having to put together Australia's strongest team, as comparing the overseas boys to the ones still in Australia without them competing against each other on a regular basis would be a nightmare.

It is a scholarship system grizz. You cant make everyone happy when it comes to any sort of selection for representative honours, some one always misses out. I just hope the best possible team is selected and its not agenda driven.
I only know of the three lads in the UK mate, although there are possibly others around Europe.

Dylan Tombides, a young striker from the west ham Academy, played in a few games in the actual tournament.

As for how many players in the uk qualify for the u17's we have 5 at Portsmouth alone, then Tombides, we have a 16 y.o CF at Blackburn, the goalkeeper at Man U, the gk at Newcastle United, and another gk at Derby I think, plus there are one or two more in the championship, we have one or two midfielders in Serie B who still qualify, and Julius Davies at Bayern Munich.

We actually had 5 o/s players take part in the pre tournament, 2 keepers and 3 outfield players.
The out field players were given limited game time, not all in their respective positions.

the keeper at Newcastle is the one that was at Derby.

Any match reports from the Turkey game?

From the England match the keepers positioning and decision making for all the goals was poor.
The Newcastle keeper was invited but didn't attend for some reason.

Nice list, we really need a sticky thread to keep track of all these guys.
Just a few updates/additions on/for some of these guys with the magical tool that is google

-Kearyn Baccus is 19 and transferred to Le Mans B(Le mans Reserve side playing 4th division French football)
-Dean Gardikiotis is the 15 y.o keeper at boro
-Bailey wright is 18 now
-Pretty Sure Aleksander Jovanovic is like 24 now

-Meehan was released from wednesday and I actually found this article on him which is definitely not good:
http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Sheffield-Wednesday-youth-star-critical.6495487.jp

and also just found where Rhys Willims other brother Aryn got to;
http://www.burnleyfootballclub.com/page/Youth/0,,10413~2060182,00.html

-DF Aryn Williams 16 Burnley

[quote=Stormpark94]For 2011 Fifa u17 world cup these are the overseas who could play for joeys:

The wash up from the Joeys so far is that until the BS gets out of the squad and they pick the best kids thats the results you get. And that includes a few UK based players who are still not up to it, but think because they are UK based they deserve a spot.

Im in the UK and I think your getting way ahead of yourselves, let the AIS kids in Australia get first crack at the spots for the 17s. They choose a path and they deserve to get first chance. In fact I would not be picking UK based players at all for 17s cause they have made a choice to go overseas and further their chances.

So if your in the UK be happy with what you have and get off the back of the Aussies in Australia who may want to stay in Australia or not have the passport or means to move. They may also be smart enough to not kid themselves that just because they made an academy here they are a superstar. Fact remains even if you get in here in the UK until your a pro its all BS anyway.

So let the AIS kids do their thing. They deserve the chance and the crack at it. If your overseas and if your any good they will find you and tell you. Until then worry about getting better rather than hanging your hat on being the number 3 choice for a positon thats weak anyway.

All the best.

Ive seen 90% of the players on that list and one not mentioned who should be the Centre half and I can assure you , your along way from becoming professional footballers.

U will find it aint much fun ending back in Australia with your tail between your legs

Absolutely right. It shouldn't matter whether the player is at the AIS or in the UK or wherever. If he is the best player to fill the position then he should be selected. In the end it will always come down to personal opinion and that is when politics and selection policy clash. Someone is always going to miss out unfortunately, because the coaches opinion is different to the player his family and friends.

I personally dont like to see players selected because they have done private academy work with one of the coaching staff, but it happens. The conflict of interest should be nipped in the bud. Any coach with a private academy should not be part of the National Youth coaching staff or even be around the team.

So you don't think that the boys that have given up lifestyle, friends and relatives to play football overseas, to try and become better Aussie players with a lucky few actually making a career out of the game don't deserve the chance to be considered to play for their country. Another World Cup just went by with us trying to use too many dinosaurs, meaning another group of younger talented A League and overseas players will have missed the chance to play in a world cup as next time it comes round they will be too old. The FFA really needs to have a look at themselves as it is the Australian way to send our strongest teams to any event whether it be football, rugby, cricket at junior and senior levels.

nope sorry mate...

i know the ffa listed him as a free agent during the AFF championships but benji said he met markelis in melbourne while he was in australia during the break and markelis said that he signed a new deal with valencia...only then for me to check this out http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Abroad/index.html and then i double checked the vicenza website and theyve also got him listed as their player now

his reason could range in anything from being not good enough to offered a quicker path to first team football

I've mentioned it one or two times in the past, but Markelis was part of the Genova International School of Soccer in Australia, as were/are a few other kids on the above list, think he was trained by them as a kid, anyway Vicenza are a club Affiliated with this Organisation as is AS Roma and a few other international clubs, so I'm guessing when he came back to Aus recently they set up a meting or introduction and things just fell into place from there.

Funny how that goalkeeper you mentioned Dean Gardikiotis from Middlesborough is not on the list of the link you posted. I wonder how many others are not on the list?
