Yeah, he had a great season. Unfortunately due to some contractual issues it doesn't look like he'll say. The old board told him they'd give him a big new deal if he played welll, and he thinks he is entitled to that but the new board don't wanna give it to him. And he is someone we can get a lot of money for, as opposed to Aqua.

Absolutely he deserves a payrise, but why the previous board made an agreement that they never would have been able to keep anyway is beyond me. Not impressed. Just goes to show just how mismanaged the club was under H&G.
Meireles was the only reason our season got back on track last term and it'll be a real shame to see him leave, I think he has the most to offer the club out of anyone this season. There are a dozen players we should be off-loading before we let Raul leave. Two steps forward and one step back seems to be the club philosophy once again.

This is what baffles me and many - he was an inspiration last season as we know, some golden goals as well as his strong midfield play now WTF is it then the new owners want to go forward as they have said and don't offer this guy more $$$$ to keep him - bugger the $$$ you can get by selling him keep him get another good 2yrs or more and as mentioned get rid more of dead wood who wouldn't make the 1st team anyway.

It's hard getting rid of deadwood like Jova and Poulsen because they're on much higher wages than they are worth - they wont want to leave on a lower deal without compo. Hopefully/apparently Jova is willing to just leave with no payout which is nice, and Konch seems on the verge of joining Leicester, but we have to get rid of Poulsen, El Zhar, Degen, Cole, Ngog as well. Wages are far too high.

Downing is going to cost £20mill. But since Juan Mata isn't for sale anymore, i think it's a good buy.

In your opinion? Sure.
He got more than double the goals and assists that Modric got last season. He created the third most goalscoring opportunites in the EPL out of any player. In a team that was struggling in the bottom half. I'd say that's pretty impressive. With a player like Carroll in the middle he'd be fantastic for us.

I would think it's quite normal for wingers to get more assists than a central midfielder.

Especially a central midfielder who's probably doing all the work and then laying on the pass for the assist.

I wouldn't say that Modric is the player who plays the killer pass. I would've thought more, from watching us play, that Crouch, Bale, Lennon and VDV make more assists than Modric.
Modric is more of a dictator than a playmaker in my opinion.

Modric is more of a dictator than a playmaker in my opinion. What I mean is Modric is more often than not the pass before the assist. Like what Xavi does, he only got 10 assists last season, but would be interesting to see how high that number would be if we counted the pass before the assist.

Edited by sydneycroatia58: 12/7/2011 07:41:54 PM This. I would be incredibly embarrassed if we forked over 20m for Downing. He's hardly worth 10m. In other news, Emiliano Insua has departed to link up with the squad in Malaysia, looks like the lad will be staying and talks with Roma over his fee have broken down.

Leicester have made decent signings. Should expect them in the promotion places next season IMO.

Yeah I know, but it's still good for em to get a run.
FT 4-3 it was, Carroll and Coady in the second half, we conceded two goals in stoppage time.
Liverpool agree Downing fee :)
Very happy with that. Good on both feet, excellent crosser, can play both sides, provides great width. Will improve us immeasurably. And (just like Adam) he'll do better with better players around him.

@OptaJoe Opta Sports 421 - Since Aug 2004, only 4 players (Lampard, Fabregas, Gerrard & Giggs) have created more PL chances than Stewart Downing. Craftsman.

Watched the game on lfc tv, average game really. 1st half was mainly second team players. Cole looked good, ngog was horrible but took his goal well. Poulsen actually had a good game and took his goal well. Gulasci wasnt the best tbh.
Second half saw most of the first team come on. Adam looked very good, his range of passing was excellent. He overhit a few due to the bouncy pitch though. Carroll looked much better, can't wait till he is 100% fit. That conner coady played a great game and scored a great goal. Reminds me of Stevie G. Maxi was useless as usual. Players got tired near the end of the game, resulting in the two goals conceded. Opposition played well for a team who is in the Chinese league one (2nd division)
