Spurs have done what Liverpool were trying to do 5 years ago - bring in talented players on the cheap. Only they've done it more effectively. And when they've spent big (like on Modric) they've got it right.

Yea our transfers have been all over the place tho, i think we have been found guilty of not really having a transfer policy in the past. At times it looked as tho we had no money to spend as we would pick players up on free's only to than blow 20 million on a single player.

Suso and Bellers haven't been chosen for the EL squad, even though the likes of Lussey and Sokolik are there, and even Suarez...

I wouldn't mind Suso going out on loan, especially if it was part of the deal bringing Mirallas in.

But if we sold him I'd be upset.

The club failed to build a consistent transfer policy and work towards a long-term goal. Going from spending 40m on two players in one window to 'bargain hunting' and spending 40m on 8 players the next is never going to work.

It would if we signed the right players  And the constant changing of managers hasn't helped.

If we're in and around top four in January, owners will invest to try and make that run for UCL football IMO. But we'll only see another 10m net spend this window I reckon. Aqua out, Allen in maybe. And we need another striker. And I'd like LB cover, Enrique has been hot and cold the last 6 months unfortunately.

Yep especially when the players being bought for the large sums didn't really warrant the price tags ie Aquilani, Johnson and Keane. Reverse those deals and spend 60 million on a couple of wingers and we would have had an amazing team..

Do we play another two legged play-off if we beat Gomel? If so does this squad cover all four matches before the group stage?

Yeah we could do with another option for AMR. Borini and Suarez the only ones who could really play there atm. And Cole. Maybe Dani.

From what I see, Cole is going to be a main figure for you guys. Not a good one but he will be a regular out on the right.

History with Rodgers, a very technical player, brought back from Europe and is a far different type of player to what failed miserably last season.

A few players like Cole were great last season at Swansea, I would guess Rodgers will want more of the same.

He has failed to stand so far this pre-season. However i do see your point, especially considering our lack of options out wide.

I guess at this stage its either him or Downing as options for that wide right position..yay :-&

Johnson's transfer was a different case. Portsmouth were in financial difficulty at the time and so we agreed to write off the transfer money the still owed us for Crouch in order to get SOMETHING out of them before administrators moved in. It was probably one of the few wise transfer decisions we've made in the last decade.

Cole is all well and good, but we need a genuine winger for the right. I think letting Maxi go was a mistake. And if Carroll leaves I think our squad will be weaker than when the summer started.

Right you are, still around 50 million for a couple of wingers!

Yep for me it would already be weaker if not for Pacheco seemingly stepping up.

I think we are in desperate need for a creative midfielder more so than a winger, especially if Aquilani is sold.

There's a lot of needs that should be addressed, especially now that we're thin on the right side. I can see a lot of very narrow formations in our near future.

I really can't see Cole being a regular for us. Rodgers liked pace and hard work in his wingers, Cole doesn't offer either of those any more. I personally would prefer to see him shipped out for 4-5mil and have us bring in another winger.

Pacheco however, I really hope he sticks around the first team squad. I think he's more than good enough to be on the bench for us. I think he'll surprise a few people this season if given the chance.

If Andy stays:

Carroll
Suarez - Borini
Gerrard - Allen*
Lucas
Enrique - Agger - Skrtel - Johnson
Reina

As our first team, with:

Eccleston??
Pacheco - Cole
Shelvey - Aqua
Hendo
Robinson - Coates - Carra - Kelly
Jones

As a second string. We desperately need a striker.

If we bring in Ramirez then it will be Suarez up top, Ramirez to the wing and Carroll sold in all honesty.
And NFI who this loan fella could be. We still need more strikers/wingers. We're fine in the middle with Gerrard, Lucas, Hendo, Aqua, Shelvey. Shelvey will step up this season IMO.

The fact we tried for Sigurdsson shows he obviously wants another CM though, and that's why I see Aqua leaving. He wants to get somebody off the wage bill to bring in someone for the middle, Dempsey or Allen maybe, and Aqua/Cole are the first options to be sold.

Also, totally forgot about Bellers with the above teams, but I think he's off to Cardiff tbh. Again, wages.

4-5m for Cole? You're having a laugh son! He's not worth half that.

Trading Aquilani in for Allen is a step backwards IMO.

I have been a big fan of Aquilani since he has been here and i was expecting some really assertive performances during the pre-season. He hasn't been bad and you can't really judge him on 90 minutes in total of football, but if BR does than he will likely bite the hand off of a Fiorentina offering 7 million.

Can't wait until September 1st comes so we can just get on with it..

There's still too much work to be done. There isn't enough depth in the middle to play a narrow formation, nor are our fullbacks competent enough to play with no cover in front of them all season.

Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com: "There's a lot of great work going on, obviously with the board and Ian Ayre in particular doing a lot of work behind the scenes. I've got regular contact going with our American owners and, in particular, Mike Gordon from Fenway Sports Group.

"Obviously when it's a club like Liverpool prices are always increased and so on, but I always felt it was important by the beginning of the season we could have the squad we want - and certainly by the end of the transfer window I would hope that will be the case.

"There is lots of speculation. I've seen hundreds of names linked with Liverpool and there's very few of them that were even close to coming here or we have even looked at.

"Unfortunately for the supporters they've got to read it and put up with it. But the message is there is a lot of work going on, on a number of deals and hopefully we can get those completed by the end of August."

End of August eh BR as you quote below

Regardless I'm entirely unsatisfied with our recruitment this summer. This is the first time in quite some time where we've gone into the season and I genuinely believe we're markedly weaker than the end of the previous season.
