Are you kidding? Of course it's better. I'd take two sides struggling to make 200, but in a tight contest like this, over that match any day.

Pity I missed it...in what context would you compare it too?

Better than the game where allan lamb scored 18 of the last over, bowled by Bruce reid, to win the match?

Better than Dean jones 145 of 136 balls at the Gabba?

Better than the match against the Windies where Steve Waugh took the catch behind the sight screen?

What about the game where John Dyson took that catch?

Windies v Aust of 84/85?

Dirk Welhams 100 on debut?

See previous page. Day after cup day, Cricket Season hasn't really 'started' yet. No point having these ODI's now they were never going to do well. Ashes' will make up for it.

the fact that a team were 8 down for 107 needing 130 + to win, and then putting on the record partnership for the 8th wicket in ODIs (?) to steal a win is just amazing, definitely up there with the best

Some ordinary bowling from the Aussies, tactically that is.

Angelo Matthews played an amazing innings though. He showed really good temperament, especially when they switched from 'having fun' to 'shit we an win this'.

it was 9th wicket partnership gooner.

whats with this aussie team. what happened to harris, hodge, hilfenhaus, bollinger, hopes, hauritz et al.

it seems that until punter comes back and takes total control, aus will always struggle.

I'm terrified that there's an article in The Age suggesting Marcus North be captain. What makes me slightly less worried is that Cameron White is dominating the poll asking who should be captain. Bring him in, fuck off everyone else.

RIP Australian cricket

by
Anthony Sharwood

Oh dear. Oh deary, deary me. So I’m channel surfing on the couch last night pondering the inevitable demise of 50 over cricket.

Turns out, I was penning a eulogy for the wrong victim. It’s not One Day cricket that’s dead. It’s Australian cricket’s golden era.

Look, obviously we all knew we were in trouble when guys like Warne, McGrath and Gilly retired. But hands up who didn’t think we could hang tough and rebuild this summer with a few old heads to nurse the young guys to maturity? Not now. In whatever format you care to name, Australia is now officially a rabble.

First the Test team loses the unlosable match in Mohali last month. Then, last night at the MCG, our supposedly #1 ranked One Day team cracks like a Christchurch highway.

If you missed the match, or made what seemed a sensible decision to switch it off, what happened was basically a reverse of what our own Michael Bevan used to do to other teams.

Yep, we done got Bevanned. Or to use another analogy, Sri Lanka Bradbury’d us.

Here’s a super quick match wrap. We bat like crap, struggling to 239. They bat worse, reaching 8-107, thanks to nice work from debutant Tasmanian off-spinner Xav Doherty. Expect “X-factor” headlines this morning.

At this point, the match looked over. Done and dusted. What’s on the box at 8.30?

Sri Lankans Lasith Malinga and Angelo Matthews delay the inevitable with a few swipes to entertain the large expat crowd. Then a few more swipes. Then some incredibly clean, mostly orthodox hitting until, Holy Dilmah Tea Batman! They only need 40 more runs to win…

Win they eventually do, with Mitchell Johnson bowling his customary bag of wides, Peter Siddle looking ultra-hittable and some bloke called Hastings looking every bit the cricketer you’ve never heard of.

All the while, Clarke steers the team around the park with the skill of, well, Ricky Ponting. So clueless was he, he actually asked post match interview smoothie Mark Nicholas for advice. True!

“Tough day at the office, Mark,” Clarke said. “I don’t know how we lost that game, to be honest. Have you got any tips?”

Funny thing is, I found myself cheering for Sri Lanka as their fightback gathered momentum. One, because it was fun to watch the big hitting. And two, because I believe Australian cricket needs to plumb great depths before we can rebuild meaningfully.

Meanwhile, with the Ashes imminent, Mark Nicholas made the very salient point that losing can become a habit. Kinda makes you want to plonk the kids’ education fund on England at $3.20 to win The Ashes, doesn’t it.

Oh, and speaking of Michael Bevan, apparently he sells home loans these days. I’ve got no idea whether his agency passed on more than the Reserve Bank’s 0.25 per cent rates rise.

What I can say is how surprised I was at the Commonwealth Bank’s oversized man-of-the-match cheque. The cheque was for the sum of $1,000. Surely they should’ve made it $1,045.

For those of you who hate the Channel 9 Comm team as much as I do, I'd suggest when the Ashes roll around, you listen to these guys.

A bunch of English blokes, and 1 Aussie, sitting at home and commentating. Fantastic stuff. Here's a cricinfo article that describes what they do, give it a read, and then deffinitely give them a listen.

Poor crowds continue in one-day cricket at the SCG between Australia and Sri Lanka

AAP From: Herald Sun November 05, 2010

CRICKET Australia must be desperate for the Ashes series to get underway after another terrible crowd turned up to watch the struggling home side take on Sri Lanka in a one-day match at the SCG.
CA chief executive James Sutherland attempted to put a brave face on the situation, but there is no doubt the 50-over game is failing to attract the interest of days gone by.

The decline of the Australian team must surely be a factor, as well as an increasingly convoluted schedule of Twenty20, one-day and Test matches.

Just as in Melbourne for the first game of the series on Wednesday, if not for the boisterous Sri Lankan fans, the SCG would have been basically deserted.

Showers that began at 4.46pm AEDT after 34 overs of the Sri Lankan innings didn't help and Sutherland offered a range of excuses for a crowd estimated at around 14,000 - around 90 per cent of it Sri Lankan fans.

"It is a bit disappointing, the weather hasn't worked for us," he said.

"You can understand some people not wanting to pay money with the threat of losing their money because it rains.

"At the same time I know the television audiences have been fantastic.

"Yes we're disappointed in the crowd, it's early in the season, earlier than we would've liked to have played and that's all because of the World Cup.

"There's a knock-on effect because of the World Cup. We have to be in the subcontinent in early February, where normally we'd be playing one-day games (in Australia)."

The excuse in Melbourne, where 19,309 people turned up to the MCG, was the amount of other sporting events on in that city, led by the Spring Racing Carnival.

But that argument could not be used in Sydney.

There were enormous sections of empty seats throughout the ground, with the highly-entertaining end to game one in Melbourne failing to inspire Sydneysiders.

If not for the constant drumming, trumpeting and cheering from those supporting the visitors, barely a whisper would have been heard at the famous old venue.

Midway through Sri Lanka's innings, a just-audible 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie' chant was an almost comical interruption during a rare lull by the boisterous visiting supporters.

But Sutherland insisted one-day cricket was still popular.

"There are some trends there in respect to one-day cricket, but ... we've done a major review of one-day cricket in the last 12 months and it's come back as clearly the number one format in the game in terms of popularity among fans.

"So we've got a lot of confidence in that.

"When we play England it no doubt will be a different story to when we're playing Sri Lanka in early November."

i think the crowds were always going to stay away from this series.

the ashes is what its all about this year and unfortunately this series will not benefit.

the media attention around the ashes has hyped it up so much, not sure anyone knows sri lanka is here. i havnt seen any marketing for it.

We need a real captain first of all, not Ponting or Clarke and to get rid of the deadwood like Marcus North.

As long as we win the Ashes I couldn't care less what happens this summer.
