Starc and Johnson are struggling for rhythm. Johnson's bowling to Root in t he last half hour of the first session was very average. He played Root into the innings by bowling it to perfect areas for the cut shot.
Australia should be trying to have England all out for 250 on this wicket. We're going to struggle to score runs on it.
Clarke is really missing Harris. He'd be ideal in these circumstances. Clarke doesn't have nearly as much control as he did with Harris in the XI, and thus can't dictate the tempo of the match in quite the same way that he could before. This partnership is dangerous. Lyon is bowling well, but the pace attack looks unbalanced at the moment. Big chance of Siddle coming in next test IMO.

Harris is starting to look like a huge loss. There were question marks next to Joe Root's technical ability against top notch fast bowling (after last Ashes), but he has basically wiped it away against NZ and now in this innings. To make matters worse, Ballance, who looked abysmal, is bound to get a massive confidence booster from this innings. We already know Cook and Bell can be dangerous and bounce back. We don't want Root and Ballance to start off strong. The bowlers need a bollocking. No sustained control or pressure. I don't know so much about cricket captaincy, but it doesn't feel like Clarke has quite got a grip on this match.

Bit harsh on Ballance there, his first class average is in the mid 50's. Guy can bat, would walk into the Australian side.
Some pretty loose bowling and a little sluggish in the field. Need to find some consistency and build pressure. These two are batting well though.

Brilliant hundred Root. One of the best batsmen in the world. Could become an absolute great.

Until now his runs have all been scored against crap opposition. Stats need to be looked at in context. He bats so far in his crease, is weak against the short ball and has no footwork. Bit like Ryan claiming Ryan is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Having said that, Ballance has ticker to have scored those runs. I can't fathom how he stayed in.

IMO Vaughn is the best commentator in world cricket. Makes sense considering how good of a captain he was

Australia doing well here. 1-115. Rogers doing well, just past 60. Smith looks like he's ready to play a big innings too. I don't know what Smith's been doing with that bat, but by god there's some cherries on them. Looks more like he's been using the bat to smash people's heads in, and has gotten blood all down the face of it.
