Sydney Olympic may be forced out of NSW Premier League competition

by BIANCA MARTINS

Sydney Olympic is upset with Football NSW over changes to the 2011 fixture.
BELMORE’S Sydney Olympic FC will be forced out of the NSW Premier League competition if it doesn’t raise up to $300,000 by February 2011.

After being told by Football NSW two months ago that it had until September 2011 to raise adequate funds - in line with plans for a summer competition - Sydney Olympic now has a drastically shortened fundraising timeline.

On Friday, the decision to grant Sydney Olympic until September 2011 to raise funds was reversed after Football NSW announced it would not reschedule the competition from winter to summer.

This about-face followed discussions with Football Federation Australia (FFA).

During a meeting of member federation CEOs last week, it was decided that no competition would run simultaneously with the A-League.

Furious Sydney Olympic Club president George Giannaros said he created a business plan after being told by Football NSW he could start his Premier League competition in September 2011.

“Then they tell me they have to reverse their decision because they made a mistake - the FFA failed to sanction it,” he said.

“It is costing us up to $300,000. We had plans to raise that money by September but how are we going to come up with it by February?

“They should have got approval from the FFA before giving us the green light. Instead, they just cut us off at the legs.

“We need to pull our finger out of our rear ends and work extremely hard because if not, the doors of the club will close. I hope the community will get behind us because we’ve been put in a very difficult position.”

Mr Giannaros said he pushed to have the Premier League competition during summer so that it didn’t double up with the junior competition in winter.

“If that happened we would have our juniors coming to watch the seniors play. At the moment they don’t do that because they play Saturdays and are too tired to come back on Sunday to watch the seniors.”

FFA advised Football NSW it would undertake a national competitions review, which is expected to be released at the end of March 2011.

A Football NSW spokesman said it would be “contrary” to its mutual obligations under the FFA membership charter for the organisation to operate independently of the Premier League competition “when a national conversation on a uniform competition structure at state level was about to commence”.

The first round of the NSW Premier League will start on the weekend of March 26, 2011 with a conclusion date of no later than the weekend of September 24, 2011.

Lol.

These guys can't even get 300k, yet their fans will bag out Rovers/FFA because they can't raise 6 million.

Agreed.
Not matter the opinion of others and many or the perceptions people may have of some of the clubs fans, it's a sad fact when you see such a proud and historical club being in such trouble. It's not ones fault but Olympics, but it's still important for the club to be there for the future of football.

It wouldn't be the first time Olympic has had to raise that kind of money in a short space of time.

If memory serves me right this would be the third time since the NSL was disbanded that Olympic has had to do this.

They are lucky they have the devoted supporters to do this.

I don't think it's $300k for a Premier League License... that's probably the cash they require to keep the club alive for another season.

If i'm not wrong, it costs a South Australian Super League side (1st division in our state -i.e. the equivalent of your Premier League) around $30k for the license to play in the league. And depending on the club, it can cost anywhere between $250k-$400k to run it per season.

You are a goose, hes not talking about the fee that is required to pay FNSW, hes talkin about the money that he will need to run the club for the next season, hes talking about things like ground hire, ground maintenance, players wagers, staff wagers, canteen stock things like that, license fees are about on the same line as south australia maybe a lil more, Olympic wouldnt be the only team in this boat because of what FFA did

so why does the football NSW need $300k from every clubs in the NSWPL?????? what do they do with it??? incompetant morons.....whats the comp fee for super league anyone know???

You are a goose, hes not talking about the fee that is required to pay FNSW, hes talkin about the money that he will need to run the club for the next season, hes talking about things like ground hire, ground maintenance, players wagers, staff wagers, canteen stock things like that, license fees are about on the same line as south australia maybe a lil more, Olympic wouldnt be the only team in this boat because of what FFA did

no worries cockhead....thanks for the info.....that makes more sense, i thought it was for the licence......but now i think about it, we paid $30,000 when the penrith panthers were in the NSWPL before nepean fucked them over thanks to footballNSW forcing a merger.......

 no worries anytime

come on now everyone knows Joe Meissner fucked them over by pulling out hes money from the club, it was a great merger for both parties, penrith finally got a home groundpenrith always had a home ground and a great relationship with the rugby guys of there own and also nepeans junior base and nepean finally got its status of old where it was competing in the premier comp, it made sence to have 1 team in the same area

seriously if penrith were still around and hadnt been fucked over by nepean they would probably have an A-League license, we had talks with the leagues club and they were interested in the A-League but FootballNSW fixed the rest......we used to have friendlies against parra power, australia "B" side and stuff like that all the time....was an awesome club

cant agree there.....i was on the committe at panthers, absolute great club, Nepean have been on hold for 30 years....i used to play for nepean as a semi pro 30 years ago......the club never gone anywhere....where as penrith came from state league division 2 to premier league in 5 years and were competative against the top clubs, where are nepean now??????they are the laughing stock of NSW football & letting meissner was just the straw that broke the camels back.........

would be nice if nepean had a team of people who can drive the club somewhere, but the club is full of nepotism and favours........i could name pleanty of idiots that have treid to run nepean

Yes but even you have to admit Cook park was a great setup, had grandstands, lights all you needed for a team in state league, any team would be crazy not to want to play there,

im not on anyones side here but having played for both clubs at various stages old my life i do have a keen interest,

You say where is nepean now? well nepean is in state league? where are penrith now?

anyhow we are at parra now so fuck nepean........and what has happened to all the young rep players when nepean were relegated.......absolute sin, a waste of great talent.....

Alot of them had to go to other teams like mt.druitt rangers, luddenham and springwood, schofields to get state league football, its a shame

its a disgrace......and yet nepean remain.....penrith panthers was a far more professional club.......and had directio and drive, in another 20 years nepean will be exactly the same as it is now, just like it was 30 years ago.....under achieving........

In my opinion both Panthers and Nepean were full of muppets hated both of the clubs and when both combined like Voltron they made a super muppet which i took great pleasure in beating.

no your not quite correct, penrith panthers cannot return due to footballnsw......pure and simple........thats why im saying they were fucked over.......when the merge happened, the wankers at nepean came to our club and said we will be fair when we select the youth teams....of course they werent and all the favours were done behind the scene....as it happens in our great game....and many many many talented footballers were lost....do the maths 2 clubs with 13,14,15,17.19, or 12 13 14 16 18's thats 75 rep footballers that were cut....and the clubs lower in the comp becomes the leader....thats the only way nepean has ever been in the premier league....due to penrith panthers.....simple
