They're not aimed at that though, they're aimed at people who can only make certain games. So you'll sign up at the start of the season, but might be going away for 2 months, or whatever.

Plus in AFL, it seems Memberships are more than just Season Tickets, it's actually bought to support the club, as well as being considered a ticket to matches. Hence why so many options are offered, but all count under one membership tally.

Short term memberships seem a little pointless. If you're not willing to sign up at the start of the season you're probably not willing to sign up part-way through the season.

Three game memberships are a good idea and is something the A-league should consider mid season.

GEELONG is at a loss as to why thousands of supporters are refusing to sign up as members despite the club's unbeaten start to the season.

The Cats were yesterday stranded on 39,000 members, more than 1000 behind last year's record and still 4000 shy of their ambitious 43,000 target set for this season.

The club is resigned to falling several thousand members short of its goal, but still expects to pass last year's total to post a new club membership record.

In comparison, Collingwood is streaking clear with almost 71,000 members, while Hawthorn has more than 55,500 signed-up fans 8300 of which are from Tasmania.

Geelong commercial operations manager David Lever revealed the Cats still had 5000 lapsed members from last year, a "concerning" figure in the club's fifth straight year of table-topping success.

"We're working to understand why that's the case," Lever said.

However transport to and from Melbourne proves costly for families and whilst the players may like playing at night time it is not conducive to families. We have so many night games in Melbourne. I think this is something Geelong need to address."

"It's still too early in that process to get some robust data, but it seems early renewal just doesn't happen for Geelong fans, for whatever reason.

The AFL-imposed membership deadline is the end of this month.

Lever blamed the Cats' lack of early games at Skilled Stadium as a reason for the slow membership sales.

Only three of Geelong's six 'home' matches so far have been at Skilled, but it could have been worse had the club not lobbied the AFL for a fixture change late last year.

A draft draw had Geelong's Round 7 home match against North Melbourne pencilled in for Etihad Stadium before the Cats won their battle to have the match moved to Skilled.

"We think we've been hurt a little by the back-end season fixture we have," Lever said.

"We've played six home games and only three have been down here at Skilled, so a lot of our members have said, 'I'm not ready to go'.

"We've had a much larger proportion of Saturday games this year, and as a club while we like to be playing Saturday afternoon games, it clashes with a lot of things."

The club has channelled its energies into selling three-game memberships to entice swaying members.

Western Bulldogs season alive after defeating Adelaide by 30-points

THE Western Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak when they ran over the top of Adelaide to win by 30 points at Etihad Stadium.

Winless since their 35-point success against Richmond in round eight, the Doggies overcame a sluggish start to gradually wear down the Crows and claim the prize in front of a modest 19,363-strong crowd.

The Dogs hit the front for the first time early in the third term and from there, only grew stronger against the fading Adelaide side.

Adelaide hit the ground running and had three goals to nil on the board in the opening 10 minutes before the Bulldogs gained some composure to pull two back and get the game back on an even keel.

But with better run and forward talls Kurt Tippett and Shaun McKernan looking menacing, the Crows again surged registering a six-goal opening term and 22-point lead at the first break.

The Crows had 18 inside fifties to eight, with the two big forwards sharing three of their sides' six goals.

But with the likes of Callum Ward, Daniel Cross and Matthew Boyd dominating the clearances - the count stood 27-8 the Dogs' way - Adelaide allowed the home side to claw back into the game, slashing the deficit to just two points by the long interval.

So static in the opening term, the Bulldogs found some run and generated a 4.5 to 1.3 quarter to go into the break with all the momentum.

Within two minutes of resuming the Bulldogs hit the front for the first time and despite the Crows briefly regaining the lead four minutes later, the vital signs for Adelaide were all bad.

The Bulldogs continued to dominate the clearances, had more run and through two goals each to Justin Sherman and Daniel Giansiracusa, a four goals- to- two term gave the home side an 11-point buffer at the final change.

Adelaide had managed just two goals since quarter-time against the Dogs' eight and were staring at a fifth successive defeat for the club since Round 20, 2004.

A free kick and goal by Will Minson two minutes into the last quarter gave the Bulldogs' a three-goal buffer and given the visitors had managed just two in more than an hour, their cause was just one more Bulldogs goal from lost completely.

It came 16 minutes in when a beautiful cross from Ryan Griffen found Easton Wood free just 30 metres out.


Four Talking Points

1. There's lifting for an occasion and then there's what Robert Murphy produced to celebrate his 200th game.

The veteran was inspirational and while he had a fairly handy helper in Ryan Griffen, his skill, run and carry for 26 possessions lifted his team over the line.

2. Bernie Vince and Patrick Dangerfield have more talent than 90 per cent of the players in the competition but their workrate was again exposed.

Dangerfield had just four kicks in the first three quarters while Vince had a few more but none of any influence.

3. It was a clearance feast early for the Dogs with the likes of Boyd, Griffen, Ward, Cross and Liberatore pulling the pants down of the bigger-bodied Crows.

At half-time the important stat was 27-8 the home team's way although the gap was narrowed late finishing 36-26.

4. Talk about unlikely heroes.

Who would have thought two elevated rookies would be instrumental in keeping the Dogs season alive?

Ex Swan Ed Barlow was superb as an under-sized centre half-forward while jockey-sized Luke Dahlhaus threw his body at everything.
